Bateman’s mine shaft in Lathkill Dale part of the English Peak District is under the ruins of a house that was built to cover the shaft in the early 1800s by the then-owner of the mine, James Bateman.
The shaft entrance was used as a water-powered pump to drain the nearby lead mines of water.
These days the house is in ruins, but the entrance to the mine shaft is now open to the public with a short metal ladder that allows you to climb down.
There is even a metal lever that, when turned clockwise, lights part of the shaft up, but to be honest, it was not that good, so I used a flashlight.
