Exploring Abandoned Buildings With Matthew Holmes

Matthew Holmes, 23 years old and exploring Britain’s derelict and abandoned places.

Frozen in time in a time warp Matthew brings back to life these haunted houses exploring them and creating a portfolio to showcase to the rest of Britain.

Matthew has been into the Second World War Nazi Prisoner of War Camp located in Weston, England. There he wandered around the abandoned buildings walking in the same footsteps as 100,000 Nazi prisoners of war between the years 1939 and 1945. During the time there he saw original showers, showerheads, and toilet facilities along with a fantastic original drawing on one of the concrete walls inside a prisoners barracks (hut). The sketch is of the 1940s looking women, possibly a prisoners wife or girlfriend or lover. The camp is frozen in time having been closed in 1945 shortly after the war and never touched since until Matthew entered.

Matthew has visited the length and depth of Britain, he has visited the phenomenal Ghost Station of Manchester, Mayfield Station. Located at the rear of Manchester Piccadilly Station frozen in 1960 the creepy house has not seen a train pass through since the closure in August 1960. The original cast-iron roof is present along with the four original platforms constructed in 1910. The station sits quietly with the railway arches linking to Manchester Piccadilly’s station approach.

Matthew has evaded security cameras and security guards to evade many of the buildings he has wondered into, risking life and death to enter these brilliant finds. Matthew has ventured into Hartford Mill – a once busy industrialized Mill powering the Northern Powerhouse across Oldham. Matthew’s explorations led him on a hot and sunny afternoon to the heart of Oldham, entering the once-thriving industrial mill of Hartford Mill. Inside the scary house, Matthew faced floor and floor of empty warehouse space filled with brick built walls and steel beams holding the heart of this building up. Venturing onto the roof, Matthew took some cool photos of himself at the pinnacle of the explore with the blue skies behind him and the massive 200-meter high chimney towering over Oldham’s city center.

Matthew explores abandoned homes and buildings so that he can experience life in the past and to bring these fabulous sleeping giants back to life in the only way he knows how to, by taking images.
