It’s no secret that deception online is a big thing. From the comfort of their homes, people can trick us into believing virtually everything—from perfect looks to enviable lives. I mean, who’s there to check up on what’s true or false?
Unless, of course, they give in themselves. And this is what the new TikTok challenge is all about. #CatfishChallenge has TikTokers revealing their real faces behind picture-perfect selfies. Essentially, it totally debunks the belief that everyone looks like supermodels in their daily lives.
Initiated by 22-year-old Australian TikToker @moldogaa, the Catfish Challenge has already amassed 409.3 million views and counting. Others joined in to share their unrecognizable faces and it’s both amusing and kinda illuminating.

It's still definately her with just make up. Not much in terms of editing the pics
I think people need to be happy no matter how they look. The touched up ones look like robots with no soul. The proper ones look like they have lived, they have stories to tell, they can make you laugh and cry. They have SOUL.
I don’t think she is that touched up. She is wearing makeup in the first picture and is in a different pose making a different expression. She looks good both ways.
Load More Replies...I agree with @Not Proud British even with makeup these people look like actual robots. It's creepy because nobody is that beautiful. I want to see these people own the way they look instead of completely change. I literally can't find anybody who looks ugly.
As a 44 year old dude I'm f*****g furious at some other guys comments on this! You DON'T HAVE TO COMMENT SOMEONE'S LOOKS AS THE INSENSITIVE ASSHOLES YOU ARE! JUST F*****G DON'T. F*****g hell... GROW UP, FOR F***S SAKE! 🤬🖕
As a 44 year old you should know writing in all caps is exasperating. Grow up.
Load More Replies...I’d like to formally apologize. I made a connection between the gap in her teeth and the main character from part 8. While this is a similarity, I had no right in comparing her to some character just for the sake of commenting. Hopefully this clears up that I had no bad intentions writing this comment, I just didn’t think it through.
See, what I don't get is why other girls want to make their eyelashes look like brooms on their face, she looks much better and more real in my eyes in the picture on the right
If the girl on the left is supposed to be the girl on the right, then who is behind the girl on the right? And is that person actually the girl on the left? The eye makeup looks the same, as does the bit of hair that you see.
Never mind. I saw what the guy in #6 did with his made up image. I really need to get some sleep.
Load More Replies...I’m getting some strong Jessica Rabbit vibes from the makeup style and colors. Nicely done. And I like that she seems really happy in the other pic.
It is not her. Bigger chin, jowls different nose. The tooth gap can be changed if desired
how can a fat lady like this turn into a thin lady? i don't understand how
Bored Panda reached out to social media influencer Shanae Thompson, who has 113.6k followers on her TikTok account, where she goes by the handle @itsyagirlshaeee. Shanae also joined the fun #catfishchallenge and her video went viral, amassing 163.6k likes.
The influencer said that she enjoys doing challenges on the platform, but this one she made at random. “I didn’t plan that video at all, that content was taken after a single take and it ended up getting a lot more attention than I ever expected!”
Essentially, the new TikTok video trend debunks the common myth that everyone looks perfect in their daily lives. By revealing their genuine faces behind the makeup and photo editing, the TikTokers made a point that the picture and reality don’t always coincide. These light-hearted and comical videos are hashtagged #catfish to show just how deceiving the pictures can be.
“I would remind everyone to love themselves for who they are. Even in the moments when you don’t look your best. Be comfortable and confident in your skin,” Shanae said. “I enjoy being able to play with makeup and change my look. But at the end of the day, taking all that off and relaxing is the best part of the day.”
And when it comes to TikTok, the social media influencer said she’s over the moon that so many people “could enjoy my goofy content.”
“I think anybody who wants to put themselves out there as an influencer, dancer, or performer of any kind would be silly to not start a TikTok account. I have seen so many people’s careers take off from the app.” Shanae concluded that nothing about this app that she has experienced really is a downfall. And if it puts smiles on people’s faces, it’s even better!
This one is kinda misleading... I mean... the without makeup is at a different angle/zoom/facial expression.
Why would you want to look like somebody else? Why is being yourself not good enough?
Hm... this one doesn't have too much difference, from what I can see... just the pose and a few edits to the complexion and eyes.
BE NICE: own your face. I would rather see you as a person than who you wish you were
yeah, I'm pretty sure all of these are to make it like: flattering pic vs. unflattering pic
Lol I love her expression in the second one- btw, anyone else think her hair is GORGEOUS?
I think all of these are to make it like: flattering pic vs. unflattering pic
This one doesn't count, she just took a picture in a less flattering angle...Anyone can look "bad/ugly" like that...
So they altered their pics to try to attain society's insane beauty standards and also uphold them, and now they are posting their "real" faces with grimaces, weird angles, etc. Social media is so weird sometimes
“They took normal pics / pics with makeup, then they took pics of themselves making the ugliest faces. The sub is called Pretty Girls Ugly Faces.” As a woman who goes no-makeup all the time, I’m glad I have an appointment with my neuro-ophthalmologist on Monday, because I think I rolled my eyes into my brain. Edit: And in case any makeup wearers feel like playing the victim, I don’t give a flying fart what women, men, nonbinary people or anyone else puts on their face. I’m specifically talking about the theatrical “ohhhh bare faces are sooooo ugly” behaviour.
Load More Replies...Yeah... they should have the same pose on both...
Load More Replies...I don't understand how these are "catfishes". It looks to me like the first picture is makeup and filters and the second picture is completely natural. Catfishing is when you start a romance with someone and you aren't who you say you are.
I catfished people since I was 16, before there was a word for it. I had no self-confidence and hated myself for being gay. Then I met someone as a catfish at 18 and fell in love with him. Managed to catfish him for 6 years before he told me he knows I'm not the person I claim. I came clean, it was the worst time in my life. We've been together for 12 years.
Your honesty and ownership shows how far you've come, and I'm so glad you found someone who could pull you out of that situation, before it caused too much damage :)
Load More Replies...Well, no one looks great when they touch the camera with their nose, and make faces, purposely make double chin and so on. So, on the left, we have posing with make up, on the right we have person making face on like 2cm from camera. How is that even.. I don't get it.
Bored Panda article explains why people shouldn't use Tik Tok, yet Bored Panda continues to share articles about Tik Tok Challenges? :S
It looks like in pics without makeup they're purposely trying to look bad. They should've just took a normal picture of themselves without makeup.
This isn't fair. When they have the makeup on, suddenly they're posing like a photo. Without the makeup, it's like they're making weird faces just to show the "difference." C'mon.
Only a few of these pics are actually different. The rest are just people in normal poses, then in unflattering poses.
I for one will be glad when the weird, boxy, thick fake eyebrow trend is over. They're so weird looking.
This type post is disgusting. It is used to shame people who either have some form of body dysphoria or who are only trying to live up to impossible standards. There also seems to be people on this list who have gained/lost weight since the "sexy/glamor" pictures. I myself looked younger and thinner two years ago compared to today.
I think their made up faces with the magic marker eyebrows, Barbie doll fake eyes and duck lips all look stupid. Who wants to look like a android sex toy?
What is the mindset of these people, I wonder. Living in a make-believe world with their beautiful avatars. So, what happened to the real world for these people? They are a SAD bunch, admiring their fake selves while living in a fantasy world. Even in these pictures they are grimacing to hide their real faces. They simply cannot be true to themselves anymore.
Make up is intended to bring out the better qualities while hiding the flaws. However, most, if not all, of these aren't the same people. The before pictures all look like Mama June, and the after has features only a cosmetic surgeon can provide. Down sloping noses are turned up. Wide noses are thin. Double chins can be hidden but not without a price. Fun to look at if you remember they're all fake
Why post such unflattering pics... lol. I feel like I want to scratch my initials in their makeup...
I don't understand the point of this article. As "catfishing" is done by people who set up a false personal profile on a social networking site for fraudulent or deceptive purposes, why would they reveal their true faces?
When did this white point on the nose/ bacon-like greasy faces become a trend? I think im old..
Can we try something similar but where they aren't trying to look ridiculous in the second pic.
Honestly, who has the time to plaster that much make-up on! This level of skill and effort seems worth to me only for cosplay situations.
I can understand how very heavy, complicated makeup can change a person's appearance, but in a lot of these examples, the whole shape of the person's face and head has been changed. Surely this is more Photoshop than makeup, right?
Look up “contouring“. It's a make-up trend with which you basically create a visual illusion to make certain features look different than they actually are.
Load More Replies...anyone else upvote a bad comment first so that when you downvote it, it looks like you gave two downvotes? And it also gives the false hope of someone agreeing with them when they get a notif that someone upvoted their comment:)
Why would you do that? It's really kind of creepy. I don't think people even care that much about some rating of comments... I don't think one second about it. And I would never do something, sp that "onother person feels a special way".... Like... What? Why!? Leave them people alone. Deal your own s**t. Sry, but that's really kind of creepy and crazy
Load More Replies...Not really, I would say... And lot of them are horrible even with altered looks.
