Errands: A Shelter-In-Place Portrait Series From My Home To Yours

Earlier this year, in response to COVID-19, I began a portrait series entitled, ERRANDS. This project documents our shared shelter-in-place experiences from my home to yours.

Art has always been my way, the only way, I know how to take care of myself and of others. The challenge was how to engage with people during such a scary, unprecedented time. I knew I couldn’t leave my home, no one could, really, and so began ERRANDS.

The first ERRANDS shoot was with Khalid on April 18, 2020. Here’s how it works: I call people – strangers or friends – on video (FaceTime, etc.). We have a little wellness check to be sure someone has asked them, “How are you?” today. Then I set-up my phone somewhere in my house – atop laundry, in my freezer, or I’ll build a diorama and create a little world – and then I take their portrait.

As of this moment I have photographed over 250 people from across the globe – from Baltimore, Maryland to Los Angeles, California, from Chiang Mai, Thailand to Harare, Zimbabwe, from Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico to Razanac, Croatia – ERRANDS have been magical, educational, sad, profound, and joyous, every single time.

For more information about ERRANDS please see the project in it’s entirety – including behind-the-scenes images, making-of shots, and photographs from the other side of the phone by those I’m photographing – at www.instagram.com/zzhandler. Also if you’d like to see a live taping of an ERRANDS shoot with the London Photo Festival and Alvaro (see image below) please visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?ab_channel=LondonPhotoFestival&v=3hU_DRpOr80

I wish you all well and please continue to take care of yourselves and others.

I have always collected the discarded or left-behind: my favorite item being the receipt I saved from when my father took me to Hooters restaurant for my sixteenth birthday just to see how I reacted to the waitresses. My visual art is my chance to construct the worlds I saw when I was younger and still wish to inhabit now. I loan my fluorescent beige-colored glasses to my viewers and through this gesture of friendship, I create dialogues about romanticizing bric-a-brac, shopping mall celebrities, and how maybe, just maybe, it’s Maybelline©. Magical realism is the muse that guides my hand to balance object upon object. I combine photography with an arts & crafts aesthetic to imbue these souvenirs with all sort of pomp and circumstance; tapping them on their funny bones just to see what happens. From first love to first heartbreak and back again, these mementos mingle with 1980s ephemera, and take shape inside dioramas I build from thrift store magic. I am a big flirt with even bigger ideas and these are my elements. I document these things because they carry a certain something that runs throughout my life—something I want to share with others. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2003 and a Masters in Arts Administration from Columbia University Teachers College in 2005. In addition to my work as a visual artist, I have constructed a career where the fields of healthcare and art education intersect to provide community and access programs to individuals who are D/deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind. I have also taught arts education classes, across the country and overseas, to D/deaf and Hard of Hearing youth in foster care.Currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland with my grandmacore home decor to the max, my neon pink heart on my sleeve, and my two cats - The Readymades of Marcel Duchamp (Readymade for short) and his little brother Gagosian Gallery 555 West 24th Street New York, NY 10011 (Gallery for short) - I am nothing if not extra ;-)

My name is Violeta and I am an editor here at Bored Panda. I love reading memes for a living. It’s obviously much more than that, but I appreciate the variety of topics, information, and pics I get to see every day and share with the world! Those funny memes really make my day too. Being born in the ’90s in post-Soviet Lithuania speaks more about me than I’d like to admit. I’m still learning about the world and myself, but I do love my friends, traveling, art, and my cat. My favorite fact to share about myself is that I used to hide meatballs in my friend’s pockets at lunch so I could go play outside. I wish all those meatballs could find their way back to me someday.
