Few things are more aggravating than people not respecting things that ought to be respected, like mother nature, sites of great significance, or stop signs, for that matter. And unfortunately, many of them are often disrespected by entitled tourists, who tend to feel like the world is their playground.
If you haven’t encountered any of them yet, first and foremost, consider yourself lucky, and secondly, brace yourself for some vexing images. We have found pictures of some of the most entitled and ignorant tourists out there, and put them on this list, which could be considered a manual on what not to do when traveling. Scroll down to find them below, but do it at your own risk, as you might get quite annoyed before even reaching the end of the list.
Below you will also find Bored Panda’s interviews with the team of Arctic Adventures, a tour operator in Iceland, as well as professor at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Dr. Rachel Dodds, who were kind enough to answer a few of our questions about entitled tourists.

“It is never great to have ignorant and entitled tourists, as they can destroy property, disrespect local cultures and traditions and annoy local residents as well as other tourists,” Dr. Rachel Dodds, an expert in sustainable tourism and professor at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in Toronto, Canada, told Bored Panda.
However, according to Dr. Dodds, what is considered troublesome tourist behavior can vary depending on local norms; for example, spitting in public can be considered rude in some places, but not in others.
“At times, what is acceptable or normal to one culture may be disrespectful to another so it is very important for the destination and attractions to be clear on expected behavior.”
In order to do that, some cities—such as Amsterdam, for instance—have implemented marketing campaigns set to draw clear guidelines regarding what behavior is or is not acceptable.
“Many destinations have started to do this and it isn’t a moment too soon. Just because a place wants tourists, this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t outline expectations for visits,” Dr. Dodds emphasized.

Friends of mine made cards with Chinese and English words, of basic words like "cold", "hot", "window", "open", "close" and learned how to pronounciate yes, no, please, thank you. "I am cold, please close the window" worked like a charm on the train ride.

This is the first one of these where the tourist might have a point. In many countries (if not most), you have to be able to speak English to work at the airport. If the employee is a custodian, surely you can't expect English, but at a ticket counter it is to be expected. (Source - I'm a former airline employee.)

The only time I got annoyed was at an international airport in Europe, and the person at the information desk didn't (or wouldn't) speak any language other than their own. Look - I know I started in English, but I tried French, and then super-broken Italian, and even offered to break out my translation app on my phone when you waved me off like I was wasting your time. You're working at an INFORMATION DESK in a major European hub, ffs. I'll take broken English over fluent belligerence any day.

I have been in many countries and sometimes feel really bad for people in their own country that someone thinks they need to speak to non English speaking people like they are dirt. There are apps that you can use to speak to someone in any language. But people that speak to others like this deserve a swift kick in the a**. Since I visit Mexico alot I have learned some conversational Spanish. But to think everyone around the world should speak English is just sickening.

I went to the Tampa zoo a couple of months ago and almost every bamboo plant/stick/whatever it’s called was covered in writing
It goes without saying that entitled tourists can be seriously annoying; their selective vision focused on the best spot for taking a picture and ignoring everything outside of that—be it people or signs—is just one of the many reasons why.
But it’s not only about being annoying. Safety is a big issue, too, as failing to see certain signs can be dangerous to both the tourist themselves and those around them.
“Tourists who disregard established rules not only jeopardize their own safety but also pose risks to others and the environment,” representatives of Arctic Adventures—an Iceland-based tour operator offering a variety of activity tours across the country—told Bored Panda in a recent interview.

Most of it is just carelessness and people bringing more than the bare necessities just to realise that they're unable to bring it back down. Every mountain that has a certain altitude has a so called 'dead zone' that's an altitude so high, that the oxygen levels in the air are too low for any human to survive, and the body is unable to adjust to that. If you enter the death zone your body starts dying immediately. It is a slow death, but it immediately impacts your strength and endurance. So those people are to weak to carry all their rubbish back down. Then lots of people get altitude sickness wich means they also can't carry anything down and some even get lost and die. There's an area on that mountain called rainbow valley. It's called that for the colourful climbing gear worn by all the people who died there, and are still lying there. Colourful and vibrant, like a rainbow in that valley. In each and every camp above base camp are tents with corpses of people who died in there.

I saw a recent article where the government blamed climbers for disrespecting the mountain. Yes, personal responsibility is important, but ultimately It's the country itself that is selling access to their precious mountain for money and have not been enforcing litter policies or cleaning it up themselves. Letting inexperienced people climb the mountain, adding more permits each year when it's dangerously overcrowded, and putting their own people (Sherpa) at risk. They are such terrible stewards of what was once a beautiful unique place.

They really need to restrict the number of people or create a permit ( you must have prior mountain climbing experience that proves you can handle the extreme conditions of Everest and know the risks) for people climbing Everest. The amount of extremely wealthy people who have never climbed a mountain of this scale contribute to the build up of all this waste. They pay astronomical amounts of money to companies that hire Sherpas who risk their lives to bring these inexperienced people up to the lower base camps just so they can say they climbed Everest. It’s like an amusement park for wealthy people who want to cross stuff off their bucket list now. These people are climbing in a graveyard and waste dump

Perhaps people who aren't qualified shouldn't be allowed to climb Everest? While perhaps not the most technically challenging mountain to surmount, the amount of inexperienced climbers adds to the death toll and pollution of one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Patuk district, Yogyakarta, 2015 - https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2015/11/30/yogyakarta-garden-owner-speaks-about-damaged-flowers.html - Dude maintains garden, he is actually happy that people loved the flowers, that do not bloom for long. His garden now has a path built through it for visitors built in 2016, and flower pattern cloth made by locals was brought in as a souvenir as of 2017/2018 (it was being considered in 2017).

Happens evry year in the Netherlands. Tulip season is idiot season. A bulb needs to produce a flower and let it go the full natural cycle before it can be harvested. Every trampled or picked flower ruins the bulb, it cannot be sold anymore. The farmers here have to place fences and employ security staff and call the police - which raises the price for the bulbs.

Happens here in Oxfordshire, UK. The farmers put wildflower margins to many agricultural fields for biodiversity and then a bunch of Asian tourists come along and trample them to get their selfies- they also damage the dry-stone walls gaining access.

I live in Texas, and we have (had now) a beautiful field of bluebonnets that over time, people taking family pictures in the spring have trampled. Once they are trampled, they don't grow back and now everyone is pissed because there aren't anymore there to take pictures in.

We need a filter on social media that can block any "look at me photos". It would be great to see how the content of so-called "influencers" could change without mindless attention to their idiot behavior. I'd pay actual money for that filter.

15 march thru 15 july is breeding season in the Netherlands. One should think that at least this will get people oblige the all year round rule of dogs on the leash at all times. I am a volunteer ranger in a nature park, it is not a pretty sight of seeing a "he never does this"-dog pulling a baby deer out of a momma deer trying to give birth. Or torn up remains of baby birds, baby rabbits. We do have dedicated dog forests and times at the beach for running and playing without a leash. And still the stupids egotists refuse to think, which will end with dogs being prohibited everywhere. Dogs doing dangerous stuff are already confiscated, taken to a secret place, tested and when failed, being killed off. People letting their cats roam freely are causing enough damage to breeding wildlife already.

They should have a warden like the one I saw once when in Cornwall (?), who shouted so loudly and at length with such colourful language at a bunch of tourists who decided that it'd be fun to get to within several feet of seals with their pups, that some of them were in tears when he ran them off the beach. Turns out he was an ex marine and he followed some of these idiots and reported them to the police. Bought him a beer later on, nice chap.

Unfortunately, there have been quite a few stories of tourists getting themselves into trouble for failing to follow warnings—those regarding certain natural occurrences, for instance, which become great reminders of how powerful and awe-inspiring mother nature can be.
Take water, for example. A TikTok video went viral in November last year, showing tourists getting caught by a so-called “sneaker wave” on Reynisfjara Beach, Iceland. While the tourists luckily managed to escape the unexpected grip of the wave, the netizens in the comments didn’t hold back from sharing what they thought of such behavior and couldn’t emphasize the importance of paying attention to the warning signs enough.

But Iceland is far from the only beautiful place where some tourists can show off their least appealing traits; and they don’t always have to be hazardous to be seriously troublesome. Some visitors are exceptionally aggravating because of how disrespectful they are, especially regarding sites of great cultural or religious significance.
In places like that, it’s especially important to keep in mind that while the site might have no special place in your heart, it does to other people. (Hence the sign saying not to climb it, step on it, or touch it, in most cases.) But unfortunately, some visitors seemingly fail to understand it.

Was at an Art museum in Berlin, Germany a few years ago. There was a line in the floor about three feet from the wall, which you were not allowed to cross. I guess they went for the architecture. 😅 As a European who has never been to the US (nor have we studied US history or literature) I also thought the houses were very pretty and the mossy trees on the grounds a must-do photo op. The word "plantation" meant nothing more than "fancy historic farm in warm country". It wasn't until I ran into an article bashing plantation weddings that I learned the background story.

Saw a video of of some beautiful horses being ridden in parade formation by wonderfully dressed soldiers, it was lovely until an idiot tourist decided to run at the lead horse to get a selfie. The horse spooked and threw the guardsman and also knocked the stupid tourist to the ground. I do not understand why morons like this tourist are not arrested on the spot, the rider and horse could have been seriously injured, I am not concerned about the selfie woman as it would have been one less idiot out there if the horse had trampled her into the ground.

Mispresented. The photo shortly predates the climbing ban enforced in June 2019. The tourist are going up the hill on an official, marked path that at the time of the photo was still accessible, despite the Anangu local population campaigning for closing the path altogether. Not doing so was a matter of personal choice, the "traditional law" mentioned was not "actual law". after the government finally announced they accepted the requests and before they enforced the closure of the path, there was a short spike of touristic visits from people climbing for the last time. That's when the photo was taken.

It still shows disrespect and lack of understanding for other cultures. At the time the picture was taken, the Anangu people didn't want an official ban from climbing Uluru, but politely ask to not climb it. The fact that tourists did not view the traditional law as imperative shows great disrespect to the Angular culture. Hence, the path was eventually closed. I think it's quite immature to only adhere to rules if they are enforced officially or by law. Most of us wouldn't climb on an altar in a Christian church, because we know that that is disrespectful, whether we believe in God or not. So why can't we just accept the traditions of cultures that seem "foreign" to us, even if we lack the the understanding?

When I lived in Arkansas, we planted a two acre field with wildflowers, we lived in the middle of nowhere, off a gravel road. We had so many people come by and tromp through them and leave trash that we finally just let our dogs loose to chase people away. The dogs had a lovely time, and eventually people quit coming.

When I traveled with an international tour group, we were required to learn the phrases for "Good Morning", "Good Afternoon", "Good Evening", "Please", "Thank You", and "You're Welcome" in the main language for each country we visited. We were also required to use said phrases when it was applicable. You'd be surprised how saying "Please" in French while visiting Paris actually makes the French treat you with a bit more respect.

I’ve travelled around Europe a lot with work and further afield on holidays. Always found that if you go halfway and learn basic phrases and carry a phrase book or dictionary then whoever you meet will help by coming the other half and help you. More often than not people want to test their command of English with you, this happens because you have been respectful enough to have used their language instead of being arrogant and assuming they’ll speak your language. There’s a joy in using a language other than your own and seeing people smile at you massacring their language with your terrible accent and stilted delivery. Bon nuit y’all.

I used to live in a planned community and the fountains were designed for the kids to climb in. One was inverted and one went up. So I could see how someone might think this was OK if there was no sign and they saw other people doing it. The water flows constantly. As far as I know stepping into it wouldn't actually damage anything.

Realistically, unless they had warning about not touching and sitting on the vehicles they probably wouldn't be able to. It's an interesting dilemma, people sit on regular (their own cars) all the time without even thinking about it. The cars aren't obviously roped off or signed so it's not *that* weird to think it's ok to sit on the hood. Especially when these are old fashioned, made of real steel cars too. If they explain or clearly sign that the vehicles aren't to be touched then sure.

I work in an art museum that recently was able to drop our admission fees so we can be accessible to all. The problem we're running into is that people have never been in a museum and have no idea how to behave. And there are other museums that have more interactive exhibits (like science museums) so they assume, since the OTHER museum was hands-on, we must be as well. The worst behaved though are not the low income families, but the middle income and wealthy families, who just assume they —and their spoiled-a*s kids— can do what they want.

Where in France did they move? France is a lot bigger than the UK and even in the UK the weather is going to be vastly different if you're in the Highlands of Scotland versus the south coast. Sat on one of these chairs one time, I was waiting for rest of my party to arrive at the airport. There was a sign that I misread and I figured no one was around so I sat. One of the airport employees told me that only disabled people waiting for airport staff to help them is allowed to sit there. I never got up so fast in my life and I was so embarrassed. About drowning: Every year +/- 10 stupid persons die at our beaches. Mostly in combination with Social Media idiocy. Swimming at night, swimming when red flag is out (there is a chance of being rescued, though), swimming in foul weather on lonely beaches, using floaties during off-land wind, going swimming despite of warning about currents, walking out during tide despite warnings not doing so,.... . Warning = Beach guards or multi-language signs of the size of a lorry explaining why certain actions are a dumb thing to do. Most tragic recent years was a 14-year old wanting to film herself swimming into the sunset, got caught in a current that took her out into the ocean and was found dead a week later at the foot of a boring island. Most kids are never found back.

If I'm not mistaken, that's along the UK's jurassic coastline. The white cliffs that the bluebirds fly over, as the song goes. Literring is a nuisance thing, not a criminal thing. So it's down to the local councils to fine for, but it's a civil matter, not a criminal matter. The swimming thing? The flags are your one and only warning, you don't get a second one. You die, it's on you. "Don't come and sue us". Defacing our heritage? Yes, you've possibly got something criminal there, but our police and funded well enough to investigate any crimes these days, because our government want them to collapse so they can sell it off to the highest bidding private security firm. Hello from a beautiful village at sea. Luckily the local government banned all wild camping some years ago. Everybody camping outside a designated, managed, paid for area will be heavily fined. This includes roadside parking everywhere, parking over night at public parking places anywhere in- or outside villages. Big signs explaining this. The police especially goes along the notorious places at 2am, fines you and forces you to pack up and leave. As no official camp ground is open at that moment, the only solution* is to drive 1+ hour to the next highway and find a roadside service station. The excuse "too tired to drive" is not valid. It is your responsibility to find a place to sleep on time. Other option is letting your Camper/Caravan be towed to the next compound and find a hotel. Works like a charm, even in high season. *Edit: Some campings have a designated area at the entrance, which can be accessed 24/7. Arrive whenever you want, pay in the morning (and have access to all facilities).

We took our children to Chichen Itza more than 20 years ago. Got up when it was still dark, and were the first and only people there. Paid for a great tour guide, and it was amazing. Back then, you were still allowed to climb the pyramid, and it was incredible.

I visited Teotihuacan in the 1980's and at that time you were allowed to climb the Pyramid of the Sun. I did, it was a difficult steep climb as the steps get narrow and taller as you climb. Those on the top were respectful. It was a once in a lifetime experience, but for good reasons such as these idiots I'm glad it's now restricted.

Local park had to close access to two beautiful waterfalls because a couple of imbeciles jumped the trail railing for a TikTok. She removed her shoes, climbed over a fence, walked past a few warning signs, fell 60 meters to her death while taking the photo; he tried to grab her, also fell and got paralyzed. All of this happened on a Sunday, with hundreds of people - including many kids- spectating. Not even the excuse of being dumb kids, they were well in their 40s....

Park rangers closed a waterfall hike close to where I used to live after a young man tragically fell to his death after the ground he was standing on gave way. (This young man was an avid hiker and extremely well prepared, and this was a horrible accident). Still idiotic people would still try to hike thr falls. So the family of the poor man that tragically died asked park rangers if they could show photos of what their son looked like when his body was found to stop anybody trying to access the falls. Anybody caught was shown photos and fined.

But fear not! Just take the towels off, put them somewhere else and claim the pool chair for yourself. Oh yes, these inscriptions are around 2000 years old, quite high up due to the tomb at the time being full of sand. Tbf to the (non-tourist) Romans, some of them did actually care about historical sites, and some of the first attempts at stabilising and restoring the Sphinx were by Roman archaeologists.

Wild guess: An American in the Netherlands? Yes, dogs are allowed at a lot of places, especially outdoors. Just keep them on a leash everywhere (it is general policy everywhere!), they can run freely in one of the many dedicated dog parks, dof forests and most of the time on the beach (exemption: Bathing season between 10 am til 18pm)

I have A Funny story that goes with this. I went to India to visit my husband's family when we first got married. Every morning you'd hear a guy going down the road, saying, the same things over and over and over and over. I literally thought it was chanting until I asked about it and apparently it was a fruit and vegetable vendor that would just call out every morning To sell his fruit and veggies. My husband thought it was hilarious. But in my defense, we were in a place that had a lot of monks and temples. And who knows what it could have been? I'm from America so I couldn't understand it. Every landscape has been incredible, but I don't know how we kept running into very disrespectful tourists. First, we ran into a lady who kept going over the ropes and stepping on the grass that was clearly marked off-limits to take pictures of... dandelions?! Do you not have dandelions back home? Another was just urinating in a parking lot; there were bathrooms available about 200 feet away. But the most disturbing of all was this one, who just decided to jump the ropes to get a better shot at a GEYSER THAT IS BOILING. I was recording to try and get a picture of when it erupted, and I saw this guy walking across. What’s going on with the world?

They probably couldn't figure out how to open it. Like one of the ranger's said about bear proof trash cans - there is considerable crossover between the smartest bears and the stupidest tourists.

Could not through this list as my blood pressure is going through the roof. So many ugly, disgusting pieces of pond scum. I really hope that the people taking the photos of these disgraceful pieces of garbage actually called them out and reported them 😡😡😡😡

Same. Often visit places where you'll see parents ignoring signs and letting the kids touch or climb on things they shouldn't. Not been to many since covid, so I haven't been able to use my normal loud remark to my Mum or Dad "It's such a same so many children are growing up with parents that can't read"

Some humans are devoid of understanding. The world is ALL theirs to use and abuse as they see fit. If you try and point out their errors or try to bring them back onto the correct side of the barrier they’ll just abuse you. All we can hope is that one day the rock falls, the animal bites or the boiling geyser teaches them a valuable lesson, make sure you are behind the rope but feel free to film their untimely end eh?

I hike with my kid and he had an idea to bring a garbage bag on our hikes so we can pick up garbage as we go. Since we started we've filled a bag a week from various trails. He's earned his Junior Ranger badge for his efforts.

Many years ago I had the great pleasure of visiting the Sistine chapel in the Vatican. Before you enter they make two simple requests; please be silent, and please do not take pictures. And yet the entire time people were talking loudly and taking pictures of the ceiling. It was a very simple request there was nothing my family and I couldn’t talk about a few minutes later after we left. And I just bought a damn postcard for $.50!
