There’s A Reason Why Amazon Doesn’t Want Its Workers Unionizing, As Discussed In This Twitter Thread

Cliché as it sounds, jobs are the foundation of societies. The premise is simple enough—people complete certain tasks and receive money in return. This allows us to buy the things we want and pay for conveniences and necessities. However, there’s also the fundamentally human flaw of wanting to get the maximum in any situation, and this applies to both workers and employers alike. And in this situation, employers actually stand slightly higher than their employees, which results in tensions between the two. And that’s where worker unions step in, representing the employees in various industries and careers. Unfortunately, even in this day and age, these important organizations are overlooked in some cases.

Twitter user @proustmalone started a discussion about unionization for employees of big-name companies, like Amazon. While it’s by no means a new look at things, it certainly highlights the issue—for many years, lack of union representation has meant workers are left to fend for themselves. And while they receive pay for their work, one also has to consider the working conditions and general atmosphere.

Every job is difficult and has its own ins and outs. But at Amazon (or any other packaging company), many of the jobs require you to be on your feet and cover quite a distance during the shift. And without unions, the conditions surrounding the position are left up to the employer, which puts employees at a disadvantage.

There’s an ongoing debate whether unions are actually helpful, or hurt the worker in the long run. It all comes down to perspective. At their core, unions talk and negotiate with the employers on the behalf of the workers, and their main concern is often the wages. Unions also have the power to organize strikes or cease the supply of workforce if the employer is not complying with the conditions. This, in the employer’s eyes, means unions disrupt the workflow and can actually threaten businesses. But love it or hate it, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, union members have higher wages and salaries than non-union members.

And then there were those who remained cautious about unions

Not gonna lie, I only read this because I thought it said 'unicorns'. I'm a little disappointed I didn't realise there would be no unicorns by the 2nd tweet.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if US citizens got a chance to live for 1 month in Europe and learn that you can live in a country where the government actually cares for you? That you can have laws that protect and care for you from the cradle to the grave without infringing on your freedom or autonomy? Where they would learn that most people don't think of universal healthcare or social security as "paying for some lazy work shy parasite" but as an insurance equal to your car or house insurance? That people don't duck and start running when they hear a bang, but rather look around and wonder who is playing with fireworks because gun violence isn't an every day occurrence? But I think the most shocking would be that the government doesn't have the right to take away possessions because they feel like it or that no one pays 70% of their income on taxes.

They can see all of those same things in Canada without travelling across the pond. Most Americans still believe they have it better than other Western countries. They're so entrenched in Capitalist propaganda that they show gratitude to greedy scumbags like Bezos. They mock countries with universal healthcare while their citizens go bankrupt over insanely expensive medical bills. They've been brainwashed since the days of Saint Ronnie and his trickle-down economics lie. All the bullsh*t they accept as 'normal' is not normal. Note: any Americans who want to criticize my comments - go ahead - your complaints change nothing for me - complain to your elected officials.

What bloody (curse) says unionized people don't work? I was union, and we worked our ar*ses off, driving four hours to get to and fro the job site (and that wasn't paid time, thanks), and putting up *power lines*. You think that isn't work? You think it isn't work to stand in a cash register, for 8 straight? You think it isn't really WORK b/c you aren't digging a ditch or scraping coal out of a seam? UNIONS WORK. THAT IS WHY MANAGEMENT HATES THEM. Unionize. Support unions. Yes, there's corruption. And... look at Big Business. Yep, halo-wearing angels, right? (If you say yes, crawl into a coal mine w/o safety equipment, work 8 straight, and then reconsider, please.) IBEW, former, and PROUD of it.
