When Ani Castillo, Mexican cartoonist immigrated to Canada, she faced a very difficult time adapting to the fact that she had to start her life from scratch, learn to speak a new language and be away from her family.
She then sought some help and a brilliant psychologist in training took her under her wing. Together they found ways for Ani to cope with the challenges. One of them was this cartoon, Imaginary Friend. The name refers to the years when Ani wouldn't dare to speak for fear of embarrassing herself in the new language, but her mind would be flooded with an incessant chatter.
Like pinning a butterfly, Imaginary Friend helps Ani to "pin a thought" and understand it better. After almost a decade of leaving her homeland, she's beginning to feel like she can actually thrive in her new country.

They say mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery... have you ever had your little brother mimic everything you do it's more annoying
The fear of that pain is way way more painful than the rejection itself :D
This makes me think how much I love my Grandmother even after she's been gone all these years. This is the enveloping safe warm love she would always give me. Thank you.
Beautiful, moving and inspirational. Thank you for sharing these xxxxxxx
This post has touched me more than any other post I think. Thank you so much and lots of love to you! ❤
A real life view from the inside. Thank you for sharing. I relate to a couple of them as I suffer from depression. At times, like yesterday, I was feeling so down that I forced myself to leave my flat to go and visit my wonderful real-life friend. What an awesome day we had talking and laughing. I left him and arrived home with a sense of peace and happiness. I wish you lots of peace, love and happiness
This accurately describes my struggle as an animal rescue volunteer, me failing to cope with my father's death this year and alot of other emotions... Thank you for making these so beautifully...
These are really great! I love the honesty of your work. Good job, keep it up!!!
Awesome stuff, I wish I would have known it earlier to support my wife feeling terribly alien in the northern hemisphere. Print please!
