15 People With A Sense Of Humor Who Decided To Have A Laugh At Their Painfully Embarrassing Moments From The Past On TikTok
Embarrassing moments are fun to relive if a) they’re long after the fact and b) if they are relived in a safe environment and not brought up by your best friend on a blind date. But what makes them so universally funny is that we all have been there. Some had it worse, others had it better, but the whole experience makes us inherently human.
And this is what the new TikTok videos are all about. It all started with one TikToker, Michaelslagel, who took the sound from the viral scene from The Real Housewives of New Jersey that the user @amiryaassofficial shared to make a connection to the end of Trump’s presidency. He then used it for sharing his own embarrassing moment of how he ran into Ariana Grande.
It was then immediately picked up by TikTokers who just couldn’t miss a chance to not share the moments they remember with cringe and painful hilarity. From emails sent out too early to hugs that were uninvited, these are some of the best funny moments that are so relatable that we totally feel for these people.

Depending on how powerful the embarrassing moment is, meaning how much you invest yourself in it (whether consciously or unconsciously), it either slowly fades from your memory, often giving space for the new embarrassments, or stays for many years to come.
These thoughts about embarrassment usually come back when you least expect them—while shopping for groceries, or having a shower. According to Jacob Goldsmith, a licensed clinical psychologist and coordinator of the Emerging Adult Program at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, “Sometimes the thought is meaningful, and sometimes, it is not.”

But not every thought is so innocent since “thoughts about past embarrassing experiences may certainly be a part of anxiety or depression,” said Goldsmith. And what we make of these thoughts is crucial in the way we deal with embarrassing memories.
“The trick is to be open to receiving the message—that is, understanding that I need to make a change—without getting caught up in a spiral of rumination, and shame that doesn’t contribute to positive change. If you think the embarrassing thought points to something you can and should change, actually taking action and making change will go a long way to stopping the rumination.”

But it’s not the memory of the moment itself that feels very real when you revive it years later, it’s the emotions attached to it that make it so hard to forget. This is because we, humans, learn by associating experiences with outcomes.
Your brain brings back unpleasant situations in the form of fear or shame when you find yourself in a situation which is fairly similar to the one that made you embarrassed. This, of course, happens without us being aware of it, and that’s why the emotional burden behind the unpleasant memories is so hard to control.

In these moments, refocusing your attention on other things is a great way to get back control of your thoughts. Try catching yourself in the moment you get stuck with the embarrassing memory, define the emotions you’re feeling, and tell yourself it’s all in the past. Remember that whatever the memory, you’re all safe now in the present moment and all the embarrassment has no effect on where you are right now.

And while distressing memories truly make us who we are today, as we learn to tackle obsessive thoughts, unpleasant emotions, and shame by learning from it and moving on, in some cases, they trigger obsessive thoughts.

Load More Replies...My gran took my sister and I, and the neighbours kid(same age as my big sis) to a fairground type place when we visited them, and it had a small rollercoaster (I'd not seen one til that day). Sis and friend went on it, I was way too scared, and then my gran said "oh I'll stay here with you"....i thought she wanted to go and so I said we should go on it, she thought I wanted to go, so went went on it. Both hated it and pretended to love it. We found out roughly a decade later that we had both been too polite and it was all for nought! Still one of my fave memories of Gran :)

Awkward? That elephant ride may have been scary but it was positively awesome!
Number 11 showed great artistic talent............that would make a nice outfit to put over clothes while walking in the rain!
The tampon vape struck me as funniest. The noodle broken arm gave me chills.
I burned an abandoned house down in 2003 because I discarded a lit roach in a 50 year old box of newspaper. Oops. I was somewhat of an arsonist. Got a lot of burn scars.
that guy that ran into ariana he musta got lucky and i wish thet dude was me cuz im fan and i used to be obbsessed with her
#9. The Sesame Street characters looking at the girl planking on the ground. LOL
The planking girl LOL the people in costumes are like "whaaaaaaat????"
Wow, that song really gets on your nerve. What a shitty litle whiny tune.
No worries, we were cleaning out the attic, and I tried on my mother's old wedding dress. But unlike the Corpse Bride, my mother's wedding dress did NOT fit like a glove.
the girl who broke her arm , I can feel it , I broke my arm exactly the same way , it took me 3 surgeries to fix it, thank you for bringing that awesome memory to me :')
This is amazing !!! Lol, I love knowing I'm not the only weirdo out there
Thinking about the time i changed seats in the airport waiting area, past security. Had a carryon wheelie and a satchel containing my purse, papers, book, meds, etc. Moved seats with my wheelie but forgot my satchel. Realized it about only 4-6 minutes later and went back. The security had already been told about an unaccompanied bag and were moving people out. I fessed up quickly and they let me approach my bag, open it, and show them the contents. I can only be thankful that I was traveling alone.
Ok these are funny but some of these make me kinda sad. Like they were just kids living their best lives, expressing themselves freely, finding new interests, and then because the world is a cold, hard mean place they learned they were "wrong" or "embarrassing" for those moments.
Maybe it wasn't the world that taught them it was wrong or embarrassing, though. People are allowed to grow & change as years go by. Nobody stays a kid forever. We look back at our past selves with fresh eyes & realize we did some silly things. Better to have fun as a kid & cringe at it now than to live in a fake wonderland with 0 self awareness as adults. Yes, the world sucks, but not because people grow up.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no. That noodle... nope, didn't want to see that. 🤮
No no no no no no no no no no no no no. That arm-noodle was too much to look at.
The only thing I can come up with is WHY? Why would anyone do this? And then, I remember, hello, brain farts.
Many of these awkward moments were from people's childhood or adolescence. Kids do silly things & make mistakes without realizing they're cringy or awkward or embarrassing.

It's not just silly videos and stuff, it also has great social commentary on important topics such as LGBTQ rights, body positivity, mental health advice and so much more. And the comments are overall very wholesome, opposite from Facebook where there's so much hate
