30 Times Dresses Looked So Bad, They Deserved To Be Shamed On This Facebook Group
InterviewNot all dresses are created equal! I’m not talking just about the style, fabric, and cut, though. Quality is something that rarely happens by accident; it’s a slow, methodical process that takes patience, creativity, sleepless nights (hello, coffee, my old friend!), and countless revisions. Creating a fabulous dress takes time and effort: you can’t call something a dress if you randomly slap together some bits of fabric.
Incidentally, that’s what one dress-shaming Facebook group is called. The ‘You can’t just slap some fabric together and call it a dress’ community calls out bizarre, hilarious, and just plain awkward-looking ‘dresses’ for the sake of entertainment and educating people about what good style definitely isn’t.
Have a good long look at the crème de la crème of bad dresses, upvote the ones that you love to hate (or is that hate to love?) the most as you’re scrolling down, and let us know which fashion disasters you think are particularly painful to look at.

Seen Today At Tjmaxx And I Feel Like It’s The Definition Of What This Group Was Created For
I reached out to Mary Waldron, the founder of the fabulous Facebook group, to learn more about the community, its rise to fame, and where the line between a good and a bad dress lies.
"I noticed the group gaining more popularity about 6-7 months after I created it, and it was honestly out of nowhere. I never expected it to be such a big group, but honestly, I should have because at the time, shaming groups were a big trend on Facebook," she told Bored Panda. "Looking back, I think the thing about shaming groups in general that brings people together and really resonates with them is the idea that there are things so bad out there that they feel compelled to share them with everyone for a good laugh, just like when a group of kids in school will see a teacher with a really bad tie and make a few jokes. To me, it’s that same concept, just on a much larger scale, that really makes these groups what they are."

Mary, who founded 'You can’t just slap some fabric together and call it a dress,' explained to me what the inspiration for such an interesting and unusual Facebook group name was.
"The group name was actually inspired by a comment on a post in the group, ‘That’s it, I’m wedding dress shaming,’" she said she wishes she could remember the name of the person who'd made that particular comment, as she'd love to credit them.
"The group was originally just a wedding dress shaming group called ‘You Can’t Slap On A White Skirt and Call it a Wedding Dress,' but over time, as more and more people joined, I decided to allow other types of dresses. The name change was actually only a few months ago, after we had already become popular and I had a larger admin team, and we mutually decided that since we were allowing all types of dresses, we needed a more inclusive name," she walked Bored Panda through the changes that happened within the group as it grew ever more popular.

Where would one wear a dress like this? To The Little Mermaids wedding "under the sea"?
In Mary's opinion, a dress is "really bad" when it's completely and utterly impractical. "The dresses I tend to really gawk at are the ones that look like they could fall off, tear, or just completely malfunction at any given moment. But outside of the group, I try to keep an open mind when it comes to fashion because a person’s taste is as unique as their own."
Mary added that what's most important is how you personally feel when you wear whatever dress you've picked out. "At the end of the day, if a dress makes you feel happy when you wear it, then you wear it relentlessly because your body is your own to dress how you want to."

The Facebook group has nearly 60k members and notes that they only shame dresses. Shaming people or bodies is absolutely not okay. “Hate isn’t welcomed,” the moderators and administrators of the group note, adding that all faces and identifying info should be covered up.
They also note that people shouldn’t get angry if people make fun of a dress that they’d worn sometime in the past. “Stop being so soft,” they note. What’s more, the group doesn’t tolerate any politics or any pretty dresses either.
Just Whyyyy?
I Don’t Understand “Fashion” These Days
Being stylish isn’t as easy as picking out some random items from your local thrift store and throwing them on. Sure, confidence plays an important role (and we’re all for buying secondhand clothes to protect the environment), but an item of clothing has to be able to stand on its own two metaphorical feet.
Fashion designer Oyinda Akinfenwa, the creator of the Janore brand, is an expert in making multifunctional dresses that can be worn in a wide variety of ways. In a previous interview with Bored Panda, she told me all about the mistakes that designers tend to make. A lack of good materials and creative blocks can affect the final quality of the product. Designers really do have it tough!

Why?
I think she may have done a little pre-drinking as she chose this dress....
"It’s hard to notice your own mistakes on your outfits until someone points them out because to you, it seems amazing because it is your work and you want to be proud of it, without realizing it may not be exactly as good as you think," Oyinda, from Nigeria, told Bored Panda.
"It’s really hard for creatives to give themselves criticism most times because of how hard we work to create the pieces we have, so most times we tend to not try to over-analyze the result,” she said.

Why The Little Danglies In The Front? For What Reason Fashion Nova?
According to Nigerian fashion designer Oyinda, over-accessorizing is one of the biggest mistakes that people tend to make most often. She’s a firm believer that less is more. And by having fewer accessories, you’re able to communicate the main idea behind your outfit far more clearly to those around you.
“People tend to add too much on when the outfit they’re wearing already has a lot going on which makes it seem tacky. Also, it takes away from the outfit because no one will be looking at the outfit, just be confused about what is going on with the entire dressing," she noted that if we want to impress others, we ought to stay wide and clear of chaos.

What’s more, wearing the wrong shoes can make or break the outfit, so Oyinda warned us that everyone should take the time to pick out the right pair.
“This is very common as people tend to wear the wrong shoes for certain outfits which really brings down the whole look, by the time you start admiring them and get to their feet and you’re disappointed by their shoes."
Oyinda believes that a quick and easy way to look more stylish is to get your nails done. Something else that you can do is wear knuckle rings that “elevate your look no matter what you’re wearing.”

Fashion is a deception, just like modern art. All you need is a pretentious arrogant person who pretends they are legitimate to decide that a turd is actually valuable, and almost everyone will pretend they like it to avoid being called an ignorant redneck.

There is no excuse for shaming or negatively judging what someone wears. People will make up any excuse or justification for why bullying or being mean is okay. It's not! I will never understand why people justify treating other people like this. Because you are literally judging someone else saying their clothes are hideous and not only is it mean. It's just not okay to treat people like that over clothing. You're making them feel bad and picking on someone. Anyone who thinks it's okay to judge what someone wears needs to realize that it's not okay. It's like judging someone for their name or their skin tone or how their hair is. That stuff just does not matter. It's like people just refuse to learn and do better. Just why? Why be this way towards anyone?
I come to BP to laugh and have a good time. This topic just feels a bit mean spirited and unnecessary. There's enough negativity in the world without having to 'shame' people for wearing whatever they want to wear. Let people be.
never have been into fashion or the haute couture. most of these aren't pleasant to look at and many look as if they would be uncomfortable to wear. but, what really bothers me is the fact that it seems so many women feel that they need to display their 'charms' as explicitly as possible and for what? being perceived as sexy, in my opinion, has nothing to do with the wrapper; it is how you present yourself. there is a line between being provocative attire and hooker wear
So why aren't men included? Are we only judging women on bad fashion choices? Why?

I have to say that even myself who has very little fashion sense and more comfortable in shorts and longs, knows that these dresses are just not nice, especially those that look like food. Are you sure that some of them are not fancy dress clothing, because I can't believe that the average woman would take a second look at any of them.
All of the women are beautiful, and I hope they enjoyed wearing/modeling these dresses. I am sure they knew they were wearing what people would consider "outlandish" clothes, and they had the confidence to make that statement. It's fun to see fashion on BP that's so different from what I see in ordinary life.
