Doordasher Allegedly Shows A “Whole Section Dedicated To People Who Don’t Tip” At McDonald’s, Sparks Heated Discussion
Apps like GrubHub and Uber Eats make dining in more convenient than ever, but slow deliveries can make the experience miserable. Imagine you plan a romantic evening for you and your partner just to get icy spaghetti and meatballs. Nothing ruins a Lady and the Tramp moment more than cold food.
Even worse, one TikToker says this may happen not because of strangely intense traffic or something else out of the delivery chain’s control but by design. @jhordanthemodel, who for the sake of this article we’ll call simply J, is a DoorDash driver and they just released a video in which we can see what the creator calls a “whole section dedicated to people who don’t tip” at a McDonald’s.
The clip instantly went viral and sparked a heated discussion on customer service and (the lack of) accountability.
Recently, a DoorDash driver made a TikTok about what happens to the food of those customers who do not immediately tip
We managed to get in touch with J and they were kind enough to have a little chat with us.
“I’ve been dashing for almost 2 years now,” J told Bored Panda. “My waitressing job closed down all of their locations when COVID hit, so I decided to start dashing as a quick way to make money while I looked for another job. But, I realized how much I actually liked dashing, and I liked the money I was making so I stuck with it. It was a nice, flexible job to have while in college (I just graduated last fall).”
J said that from what they’ve experienced there are more customers who do tip on the app than don’t. “Other Dashers may have a different experience because some areas aren’t as busy as others.”
And it went viral

In an earlier Bored Panda article on this issue, we explained that the total earnings a Dasher makes off an order consists of Base Pay + Promotions + Tips.
When customers place an order at one of the restaurants, they agree to a delivery fee and set the tip. The app then pushes orders to drivers who are logged into the app.
Once someone accepts an order, they drive to the restaurant, pick it up, and deliver it to the customer.
Base pay is DoorDash’s base contribution for each order. It usually ranges from $2-10+ depending on the estimated time, distance, and desirability of the order. Deliveries that require Dashers to travel a longer distance, that are expected to take more time, and that are less popular with Dashers have a higher base pay.
This number does not change based on the customer tip amount; if there are two identical deliveries where one customer leaves a $3 tip and another customer leaves a $6 tip, one Dasher will earn $3 more than the other.
If Dashers aren’t interested in a specific order, the payout for it goes up every time one of them declines it, so eventually, it will get big enough for a driver to pick it up. The problem is, however, that until that happens, the food is just sitting there.
A spokeswoman for DoorDash told the Daily Dot in a statement, “We’re proud of the flexible earning opportunities we provide, with Dashers making on average over $25 per hour they’re on a delivery. We are actively looking into the issues raised in this video and will take appropriate action as we learn more.”
But people are appalled by this system
They say tipping before you receive your order makes no sense

And there’s a heated discussion in the comments
Another TikToker, Amanda Jones (@prettyladyj1), used the duet function in response to J’s video and made a case that “tipping is a satisfactory service,” garnering nearly 3M views and 340K likes.
“That means if I’m satisfied with how you bring me my … food then I’m gonna tip you,” Jones says, continuing to argue that tipping should be done after a customer gets their order.
J commented on Amanda’s video saying, “You can feel however you feel, the fact still stands that we don’t have to take your order. Tip afterwards, literally no one is stopping you.”
J highlighted there’s a difference between going out and ordering food to your home. “I would say if you’re thinking of delivery services like a restaurant with servers, then this is why you may be confused on how it works. It’s not the same. I was a waitress for 5 years at many different places, and can confidently say it is not the same.”
“A ‘tip’ is the wrong word for delivery services, with Doordash is more so a ‘bid for service.’ You’re paying your driver to pick up and bring you your food. As Dashers, we are independent contractors, which means we aren’t employees of Doordash, but rather have a contract with Doordash. And this contract states that we legally cannot be fired/deactivated over not taking orders. They could do that if we were employees of Doordash, but we aren’t. I think a lot of people just didn’t know all of this and were under the impression that whether they tipped or not we had to take their order. So, finding out now that that isn’t the case I guess has some people upset.”
Food service distributor US Foods sought to gain insight into the delivery landscape and conducted a national survey of people who have used a delivery app at least once along with those who have delivered food for an app-based service at some point.
“Our survey establishes the most common complaints in the world of food delivery apps. Not surprisingly, people want food served warm, fresh, and on time – especially when they’re paying a premium for it,” US Foods wrote in a statement.
The top frustration among delivery app users was that food isn’t always delivered warm or fresh, a complaint cited by 17% of respondents; that was similar to the 16% who were critical of the fact that food was delivered late. Among other issues, 12% highlighted incorrect orders or restaurants ignoring special instructions, 11% were irritated by inconsistent prices, 10% were bothered by food getting shaken around during delivery, and 9% were annoyed by inconsistent or limited menus.
But frustration extends beyond the customers. “Of the nearly 500 deliverers we surveyed, topping the list is weak tips, food not being ready at the restaurant, and lack of communication with customers. To remedy this, many operators are scaling back delivery services and menus so as not to overwhelm the kitchen and create a negative experience for both the dine-in and delivery customers,” US Foods noted.
The survey also revealed that 95% of people tip deliverers regularly but only 63% of them do so via the app. The rest 27% still use cash.
J wanted to emphasize that at the end of the day it’s the customer who is making all the decisions. “You 100% can choose not to tip at all, and you 100% can choose to tip after the delivery or tip in cash.”
“We aren’t upset with you over your choice, were just informing you of what could possibly happen if you don’t tip,” they said. “There will always be a Dasher who is still willing to take your order without a tip. Just know that whether you tip on the app or in person, we don’t get the tip until after we deliver your food. It’s not released to us until we deliver the food. So, either way, we are actually getting tipped after delivery, which is what some people were also upset about. And know we aren’t being mean or vindictive by declining to take your order, we just get paid $2.50 by Doordash, so we have to make the best out of our dashes. I hope this explanation helped!”

What a shitty attitude. Ok, it is a free market and I understand you can choose which order to take, but don't laugh in my face telling me "if you don't tip in advance I won't bring you your food". My answer is simple: "i won't be using your service, have fun with that, entitled brat, Bye bye!".
It says "I will take an order where I have an assurance of making more money over an order where I might not be breaking even." It's not like they're maliciously punishing people who don't add a tip. The people who do put the tip on the order are offering a more attractive job for them. It's not surprising that the less attractive orders sit until there's nothing else left. In a busy market, that might be all night. I think "tip" is probably not a good term for it since that means a thank you for good service. This is a bid for a worker to do a job. Delivery workers are auctioning off their time and customers are bidding.
Load More Replies...But that's not how it's advertised to the customer. And really, the company is the problem here. And that a driver doesn't earn money or even looses money over a delivery is just terrible. So instead of blaming the customers for not tipping in advance - start blaming the company for terrible policies.
I'm not DoorDash lol I don't care if you stop using the service. After all, I'm probably also working on a different delivery app you do or will use 😂😂😂 I deliver for a multitude of apps. If you don't see me on DoorDash you might see me on Uber 😂😂😂 and I'll still reject you if you don't tip over there 🤷🤷🤷
Good! Go away! Please please please, if you don't tip then good and STOP USING THE APP. I am tired of declining seventy 2-3 dollar trips per hour anyhow. We don't need you either if you think I only deserve 2.50 for driving 11 miles for you. And don't BS us, only 3 of my thousands of deliveries ever tipped me after delivery. Your waiter doesn't have to destroy their car and empty their wallet on gas to get to you. Your privilege is outstanding. Other countries don't tip because they tend to pay their employees appropriately. Make doordash worth me turning the driver app back on after a year. Doordash is trash and used by broke hood rats here in DC. Ubereats is the way to go. Every area is different and tailor your delivery app appropriately. Maybe grub hub service is better and worth the inflated delivery and extra service charges.
2-3 dollars tip for delivery has long been typical for a small food order. And comparing yourself to servers is a bit apples/oranges. Honestly asking: how much do you think you should be tipped for a $20 McD dropoff?
Nothing. 2-3 dollars is great for small orders and nothing I said attacks that. However.. You shouldnt be having McDonald's delivered anyhow unless it's a huge catering style order. There are newbies or drivers who literally live a couple blocks from you who don't mind taking 3 bucks for 5 minutes of their time. I never do McDonald's orders anybow. Not after the last time in the hood where a dude who knew the customers name and exactly what he ordered took the bag and bolted before the real customer came out screaming and chased after the guy. It was hilarious. I didn't get blamed still got paid and even tried to hunt the guy down in my car, but screw that noise. I have another phone to pull up a 3d map for where I'm going and 80 % of the time mcd orders are for the hood.
Neither a server nor a McDonald's employee is driving food to your house in their own car, relying on their own car insurance, burning their own gas. You want to tip like you're at a restaurant, or you want to have a McDonald's employee hand it to you for free, then get off the couch, put on some clothes, and drive to a restaurant. If you don't want to do that, then you need to be prepared to pay someone else to do it for you, or wait until someone decides that whatever you bid is worth their time and effort. It's no different than hiring someone to mow your lawn. If you want to lowball and refuse to offer a competitive, attractive rate for the job, you better be prepared to watch the grass grow.
Get a different job if you don't like the pay. No one is obligated to tip and your wrong for not doing your job and bringing the food on time.
They are doing their job. They choose to do ones they get paid for. How are you going to tell people to work for free? If you're not tipping you're not getting the service plain and simple. You have a problem w that take it up w the corporation that's not paying their employees a living wage. Everyone needs to be paid for a service they provide. You are not special.

I think it's a great attitude. It says "I value my time and will not rent it out for less than I am worth. Take it or leave it." It's funny how people are so used to the way that the "free market" screws over workers, but when the workers figure out a way to work it, all of a sudden it's a problem.
Gas money... I live in an area where only 10% of people tip and the base pay that I get from door dash goes back into the tank. And before you start yelling about getting a better job, I'm homeless and living out of my car, so this is the best I can do right now... And honestly, I know squatters that stand on the corner begging and make more than I do, but my pride won't let me do that...
How many times does it have to say that the drivers DO NOT WORK FOR DOORDASH for you to understand that THE DRIVERS DO NOT WORK FOR DOORDASH?
I agree with your main point. The problem I have, is some of these dashers think what they do is worth way more than reality thinks it's worth. They aren't providing medical assistance, they're literally dropping off a bag of food. Did you see the video recently of the dasher going apeshit on a woman and took back the food because the lady "only" tipped her $8 for a 12 minute drive. That's the equivalent of $32 an hour. To deliver a bag of food. And she legitimately believed it was worth way more, so she took the food back when the lady refused to increase the tip.
That's the great thing about a free market! If you don't think it's worth it, YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THE SERVICE.
There is the 12 minute drive, but there is generally going to be travel time to the restaurant and sometimes a wait at the restaurant. Those two things are going to vary by where the driver started and whether the restaurant kept them waiting. I've seen drivers sit at restaurants for 15 minutes or more. They're told the order is ready and it isn't. I always put an extra tip on there when that happens.
And she shouldn't have taken that order at all, of the tip listed wasn't enough for her.
That's the free market, though. She thinks her value is "x" and you think it is "y". You can either pay "x" or you can choose to not use her, just like she is free to not take the job for "y."
I think you’re missing the point, and trying to make your opinion more valid of free market free choice. These dashers are indeed subbies, they have made a contract with doordash for the payment of x delivery service. It isn’t the customers fault that these spoilt children want more than the contract they they signed. The point that they are hurting / bullying the customer into paying more money. You signed a contract from doordash to pay you x (didn’t include tips) that’s your own fault. If you didn’t like base pay then you shouldn’t of started working for low pay. Simple
Their contract explicitly includes the ability to only take the orders they want to. If you want the luxury of having someone bring food to your door, then pay for it. If not, go get it.
But the customer already did pay for it; in the large overhead added to the cost of the food, and the delivery charge. What is the delivery charge for if it isn't to pay for the delivery?
You haven’t read the contract, so stop speaking. DOORDASH’s online credit card software may permit consumers to add a gratuity to be paid to CONTRACTOR, and consumers can also pay a gratuity to CONTRACTOR in cash. (https://tinyurl.com/yc29kcyj) Go to section V you can see it’s wrote there. a sum of money paid to an employee at the end of a period of employment.(Dictionary)
Here's an idea, try hiring a roofer but tell him you're not going to pay him anything until after he brings the supplies to your house and does the work.
Argue all you want. The reality of the situation is that these platforms all include the option for drivers to take higher value gigs. If I'm willing to pay them more to deliver my food hot, then they'll take my gig. This is textbook capitalism.
So all the waiters and bartenders who agree to get paid well below minimum wage because their jobs are considered tipped shouldn't actually expect to get tipped either? What an incredibly naive position.
Spoiled children? How old are you? Nobody's bullying anybody, you're just missing the point that we don't have to do what you tell us because we are the boss. And if you want to talk about spoiled, what about all these entitled people that think they deserve us to bring their food for nothing? I love my job, I make damn good money doing it, and I'm 47 years old. So shove that spoiled children crap.
Value it ssoooo much that you Chose to drive around making money on deliveries and f*****g it up going to the wrong part of the city while having GPS which is something Actual delivery drivers before skip the dishes and door dash existed. Do your F****n Job, I personally know guys who make a lot of money doing this
If you don't like the system, don't use the system. Nobody is stopping you from picking up your own food. Delivery is a service, period. If you don't want to pay for the service, don't use it.

Mihai does her menial job for free I guess. Trashy boomers call people who work for money “entitled.”
It's not that I expect them to do the job for free. I do not know how the Door Dash thing works over there but when I order something I pay for the food and for the delivery fee. If the service is top notch I can add a tip. But the customer already pays for the delivery! So the delivery person is getting paid for the delivery, for their job. It is not a free delivery. Not tipping does not mean getting the food for free. Also, relying on tips as a 60-90% of income = tax evasion.
Yes dasher or Uber eats delivery person gets paid for the order besides the tip but usually it's like $4 or $5. So you can clearly see if a dasher gets a request for $5 to go to a restaurant and wait for the order to be done, then drive how ever many miles it is all for the mere price of $5 it's not worth it. I'm a dasher and Uber eats driver and I reject 80% of requests because I don't have the time to do $3, $4 or $5 orders. I'd make less than minimum wage.
I find persons doing a basic quality job who expect big tips as being entitled, yes.
Or go get another job. Imagine expecting to get tipped on a job you haven't even performed yet.
Why should we get another job if we love what we do? You aren't technically tipping us you are paying us for the convenience of bringing your food to you so you don't have to leave your house.

Entitled how? It's a shitty attitude because she doesn't want to bring ppl their food for free? Seems like the person who doesn't want to get their own food but wants someone else to for free is the brat
Usually the customer pays for the food and for the delivery. If the service is top notch the customer can add a tip. But the customer already pays for the delivery! So the delivery person is getting paid for the delivery, for their job. It is not a free delivery. Not tipping does not mean getting the food for free. I provide excellent service, on time, hot and fresh just to be stiffed about 90% of the time. I accept every order so my score doesn't drop and my account deactivated... I'm also homeless and living out of my car so this is the best I can do. My pride won't let me stand on a corner and beg, but I know people who do and they make way more money than I do. Every day I dash, I pray to get enough so I can get a room and sleep safely in a warm bed at night and have a hot shower, but I can barely afford to feed myself after keeping gas in the car, as well as routine maintenance. Now door dash is offering the pass so you won't have to pay delivery fees.. but that doesn't change the mindset of someone who is already stingy and won't tip. I can't tell you the amount of crap I've gone through for a 2.50$ order.
Skip the dishes makes you choose a percentage before the person has even decided to go pick up at that location. You can manually change it or put zero. Drivers shouldnt be seeing the tip at all until after they do their job. I tip the lowest because Im paying enough as it is and they always get it delivered fast and unlike other people who seem to forget they even ordered something and the guy waits 30 minutes, Im out there waiting for them so they barely get out of their car.
It's not tax evasion. Why do you think that they don't pay taxes on their tips? If you pay a tip through the app, that's tracked and they should be paying taxes on it. Of course, since they are not door dash employees, they're responsible for paying their own taxes, but that's exactly the same as for what door dash pays them for taking the delivery.
Do you understand what a delivery fee is for? And I'm not just talking doordash, I'm talking about your pizza delivery guy too. A delivery fee basically covers the gas it takes to get the food to you and get back to the restaurant. That's it.

It's a free market. If you don't want to pay for hot food, someone else will. Easy peasy.
Go get it yourself and see if it's still hot when you get home. I carry an insulated bag to put orders in, and always communicate with the customer regarding their order, my ETA, etc... But there are still people who refuse to tip
It's not free, she's still making money by delivering the the order. The tip is extra money for the service. She sounds like an entitled twat who should probably get another job where she is not needing tips. I always tip the drivers but this attitude is terrible to have.
The base pay from the app covers the gas it takes to get to the store and then bring it to you. I provide very good service, communicate with the customer and follow all directions but I still get stiffed constantly. I accept every order I can because I don't want my rating to be lowered and risk deactivation. Before you yell about getting a better job, I'm homeless and living out of my car and this is the best I can do right now... And I can barely feed myself every day, while delivering food I can't even afford.
Lynnie, no decline orders will not affect your rating and you cant be terminated for declining these abusive troglodyte’s
Why should someone take a bag of food to you for 2$ when every other order has a 10$ tip attached. Have you lost your mind? Who the hell takes a pay cut and she does not work for doordash she works for herself and gets paid by doordash but they do not own her time or her car. This is how the US is and until the toxic work environments stop free market is the only way for people to actually live and eat and not die and take care of their families. It boggles my mind that you think that anyone should take a pay cut bc youre too lazy to go pick up fast food in a drive through.
Actually she would be making less than minimum wage if she just relied on doordash or Uber eats pay which is like $5-$10 an hour
Why should she deliver your order for $3 when someone else will pay $5?
Because the customer paid a delivery fee already? What is the delivery fee for if not to pay for the delivery?
Why would they choose to take an order with no tip over one with a tip though? In free market, capitalistic America, wouldn't they be stupid to intentionally choose to get paid less? As a customer, you can choose to pay the last amount possible for your food, or you can choose to pay more to get your food more quickly/hotter. What do you value more? Entirely up to you!
But she does not work for doordash she does not get that delivery fee. They are lucky if they make minimum wage wo tips they wouldn't at all. Why demand people work for less than minimum wage bc you don't want to tip? Omg the entitlement is insane. Don't cheap out dude if you live in the US this is how it is. Workers are being exploited to the point of dying and you want people to work for 2$ an hour. Don't order from this service.
Doesnt even cover gas back in dead zones! So when you go 8-10 miles, 30 mins in traffic each way? Plus wait time etc.
See, having been a server (back in the days when places still accepted checks and used the chonk-chonk credit card thingies so we were only paid non-cash tips once per month), I always preferred to be tipped in cash. So on the rare occasions I use a delivery service like Door Dash or Uber Eats, I have cash in hand to give to the driver. It saddens me that I have cash in hand waiting on the driver and they are going to deliver to me last or not at all because I didn't tip on the card. I guess I just won't use their service again.
Also by tipping in cash you can guarantee that 100% of the tip is going to the driver.
Load More Replies...Yes but the point is 80-90% of people who don't tip in the app don't tip in cash. So you're wasting your time hoping someone magically tips in cash.
I doordash and I pray that people tip cash when I take orders that don't have a tip on them. But truth be told 95% of the orders I take that don't tip. Don't tip cash either so it's really a hit or miss. Mainly a miss for us and making $2.50 for 30 minutes of my time with my car and my gas is really not worth it as I wish more people would tip cash but it's just not reality in this day and time
Lady, you're barking up the wrong tree. Demand decent work conditions and, given that you're an independent contractor, walk away if you're denied them.
She is doing what you suggest. She is literally walking away from the jobs that don't meet her pay requirement.
Load More Replies...Useless human being, a tip is a bonus for the job you do, she isnt making money from tips, its all in how many deliveries you can do. I used to deliver appliances and furniture and tips were rare. I could do 5 or more deliveries an hour so which would I want to be paid by? the delivery or the hour?
So her pay requirement as an independent contractor are tips? Imagine a plumber auctioning their services... for tips.
Imagine expecting a plumber to come to your house and do the work for free
OK, change it to "variable compensation." (Or don't be such a nimrod that you get stuck on semantics.)
Let me put it this way to try to get through your thickness: an independent contractor who can only negotiate these work conditions would be better off as an employee. Because you guys clearly don't know how to sell your labour.

Or just continue to deny all orders that don't leave a tip, you know how it works and honestly how cheap can you be if 4-7 $ is really hurting you that much you should not be ordering delivery lol your priorities are f****d plain and simple
It's not hurting me at all since l write from Europe where Uber had to backtrack and admit that their drivers were, in fact, employees ;)

Her working conditions would be fine if poor people weren’t demanding free labor from her.
2.25 is what door dash pays. You gonna drive 15 miles for 2 dollars. Then 15 miles back 🤣. So they want us to pay to bring their food??
Doordash pays 3$ after you factor in gas that the drives pays for themselves yea your basically making nothing....moral of the story just tip your driver if you can't afford to maybe delivery food shouldn't be your top priority
Not enough for her time and gas and where and tear on her car. $2.50 is nothing for 30, 45 minutes of your time. That's why you pay to get your food
Calm down. Her contract explicitly includes the ability to decide which orders to deliver.
What don’t you understand about agreements ? She signed up for a company to be paid x amount. Gratuity isn’t guaranteed, it’s paid after end of contractual agreement. The contractual agreement is pickup and delivery. By just saying free market you are the problem. You can’t comprehend the fact that she like others is bullying CUSTOMERS to pay for something they have already been charged for. GRATUITY ISN’T GUARANTEED.
You keep saying this and it keeps being wrong. Her contract doesn't require her to make any delivery she doesn't want to make.
Then their food isn't guaranteed because dash does not pay enough to waste our gas in the wear and tear on our car without getting something else in return. Plain and simple tip or don't get your food

Jihana, And we are all very proud to witness this glorious moment! :D
