In a sea filled with seaweed, there’s nothing more entertaining than watching dolphins on YouTube come together to get buzzed.
I learned that pufferfish releases nerve toxins when chewed by dolphins. But, what is the alleged purpose? Maybe humans understand this notion better. However, this deadly behavior is not something that humans should ever try.
Pufferfish release a toxin called tetrodotoxin, or TTX, when threatened. One would imagine this act would paralyze the adventurous mammals since research defines as one of the most toxic compound. Once secreted in the human body’s nervous system, the paralysis is gradual. The deadly effects are like a Google search into the world of WebMD.
Regardless, dolphins merge in a trance with their sleepy eyes as they pass the pufferfish back and forth for a good 20-30 minutes. The conflicting question; is this intentional? It is possible.
Taboo to most people, there are those who eat pufferfish or otherwise known as “fugu”. A professional cleaning to remove the toxins is necessary before eating them. Still, there are warnings before trying to eat the lethal fish because it is so harmful and some TTX can linger.
Research shows that dolphins, like humans, gain pleasure in similar ways. So, why couldn’t dolphins puff it out occasionally? The debate is natural and offers mutual entertainment that is a must “sea” to believe.
