A Dog Trainer Who Allegedly Killed Or Sold A Dog In His Care Asked Not To Post His Texts On Social Media – Here They Are

After losing her family pet, Rachel Grace Tyrer from Jonesboro, Arkansas, says she can’t get any closure because of the dog trainer who was taking care of it at the time. She claims that her puppy, Ollie, went to Hunter Nelson’s Four-Legged Retrievers for a 4-week dog training program but ended up lasting 11 weeks there.

RELATED:

Rachel wasn’t happy with the prolonged puppy training stay, so she reached out to Nelson on multiple occasions, but judging from their conversation, there was always an excuse why the owner couldn’t see her dog. Eventually, she got a text saying that Ollie died and was buried. Rachel thought the circumstances surrounding her pet’s death were mysterious and suspicious, so she decided to investigate it, but according to her, Nelson wasn’t of much help. She even thinks Nelson might have resold the allegedly dead dog.

“We went to high school together and originally [he] had a good reputation,” Tyrer told Bored Panda. “Ollie was a little over two years old when I took him to the Four-Legged Retrievers for dog training classes. [At first,] Nelson was nice and understanding, [but] then slowly become extremely shady.”

The NEA Report got in touch with the alleged scammer, and he said that not everything Rachel has said is true. “It’s not a scheme and for sure not drugs, I don’t know why you would even say that,” he told them.

“Truth is [the] dog got bit by a snake [and] passed away. I should have taken [the] dog straight to [the] vet like I was supposed to do, but instead, I flipped and didn’t. [I] buried [the dog] correctly by all means, but I messed up and told her I did and shouldn’t have. Now, if you’d give me time to talk to [an] attorney, I’d greatly appreciate it by all means.”

Rachel has contacted the police, but they refused to help, saying it was a civil case. Searching for answers to this freak accident, she turned to the internet, asking if anyone knows anything that could help her. Scroll down to check out the conversation between Tyrer and Nelson she has shared and told us what you think of the whole situation in the comments.

“I couldn’t pay Nelson a surprise visit because he would not give me an accurate address,” Tyrer added. “I tried multiple times to contact other trainers to get his location, and no one had an accurate address.” And even though Nelson isn’t meeting with her, Rachel hopes to find her Ollie and is ready to do whatever it takes.

After four weeks and the first excuse, I would have turned up in person and caused so much problems they would have been calling the police. I feel very sorry for the family; but I don't know why she waited for so long without doing something.

Yes i am surprised of how she was so patient. After 4 weeks i would have gone to pick him up. Not that itsbher fault in any way. I cant believe how the police will not investigate. Its either a case of animal abuse or theft. I would expect that to be in the polices care...

It was such a long conversation, that while i read it, my son who was in highschool, went to college, passed, joined army, did 3 tours, got married, had kids and now retired and sitting on porch sipping whiskey as a proud vet and asking me to tell if i have finished reading this post and hurry up to refill his glass.

Sorry but how the hell could someone let what was supposed to be a 4 week "course" allow it to get to 11 weeks before thinking about taking action? I would have been there 1 day after the 4 weeks to at least see what was going on.

This is such a strange story.. I mean, is that a normal thing to send dogs on 'boarding school' training? Surely you're not fit to be an owner if you cant give you dog basic training. Plus, training works a lot better if it is the actual owner administering it or at the very least the owner is there along side the trainer. I am not saying Hunter isn't in the wrong but I feel as if there was stupidity from both ends on this story! I could not go 4 weeks without seeing my doggo, let alone 10 weeks. I am heartbroken for Ollie and I hope the owner finds justice, however this to me is just like lazy, rich parents that send their children to boarding schools to be taught, so they don't have to do anything themselves. If you haven't got the time to train a dog, don't buy one. Sorry.

The only possible reason that I can think of is that she lives in some remote area where there aren't any local trainers to work with. I'd be very wary of sending an animal away. There was a news article a few years back about a guy who sent his horse off to a trainer to be schooled in calf roping or something like that and the trainer abused it to the point where it might not even be ridable.

Yes, the dog you loved SO much that you kept it outside and sent it away for 4 weeks to be trained and didn't go out immediately to check on when it dragged on for months. I feel sorry for the dog but not the owner. If you can't have a dog in your home and treat them like family, don't f*****g get one. >:o|

I don't understand why she accepted his excuses and didn't just go to his place to take her dog after the fist excuse. Further, she says he consistently missed the appointments they made where she was supposed to see her dog and train with him, he never sent her any updates either. That is incredibly suspicious and she should have demanded her dog back after he didn't show up to their appointments. The dog was probably already gone by then.

Texting takes way too long. If anything like that would have happened to my cat, I would have called and yelled so loud that he wouldn't need a phone to hear me, even if he was at the other end of the country! On second thought, I would have gone there to get my cat/dog/pet and yell at him in person.

Honestly? Both the trainer and the owner "sounded" uninterested in poor Ollie. Dead or alive, his owner sounded like she was discussing grocery shopping at certain points... "Your dog was bitten by a snake etc etc etc" Her response: "Yeah I got ya." Her response should have been "Oh my god how is he doing? Was he in shock? Is he hurting? Can I come see him now? Nevermind, I'm already on my way."

She even said the death of the dog wasn't issue, but the trainer's lies were. It sounds like she didn't care about that dog at all and only became concerned when she thought he sold him.

The moral of the story is, don't send your dog away...at all. Work with a local trainer who can come to your house or work with you in a group in your local area. Why did she wait so long, nothing could've separated me from my pup, camp out the front until he gets returned.

I'm by no means on this girls side because even though it sounds like a really sad situation, she sounded negligent on her part by not taking further action sooner. However, all the people talking about how dogs shouldn't live outside, there are plenty of working breeds that live outside in Farm and Ag situation. Great Pyrenees dogs are a big choice for goat heerding and protecting. Just as the goats stay and live outside, the dogs stay with them outside all the time. It's very common. I agree if you get you a little jack Russell and leave it outside all the time you don't need that dog and it deserves a better life. But it seems like not many people on this thread understand some working do stay outside all the time. And it's no where near abuse or neglect.

This was a Retriever - Not a sheepdog, cattle dog, herd dog or guard dog. What was he being trained for is my biggest question.

First: training should be Human Keeper AND Dog. Sending a dog away to be trained works for guard dogs and hunters, but not day-to-day obedience. Second: She sounds too busy for a dog. Third: She should sue in court for loss of pet and companion. Get it on public record so Hunter can't deny it.

The "trainer" seems like a complete liar, sure; but I'm rather surprised at the owner who doesn't seem to care about the dog that much. I mean, somebody else is keeping your dog away from you, with no news and sounds shifty, but you just keep texting them for weeks instead of showing up and demanding some answers?

Yeah i can't even.....if this was one of my boys i would bring a hell storm to that place, it is making me so angry for this poor girl and her poor dog. She left it a lot longer than i would of though, after a couple of days of weird unanswered questions i would of been on their doorstep. If my dog wasn't there the guy would of been in big trouble, nobody messes with my animals. I hope this guy is never trusted with another animal again. She doesn't seem to bothered at first though, it's strange. This is abhorrent beyond belief.

Why?!? Why do ppl adopt a dog, swear they're gonna give it a better life, then toss it out back to live out its life alone. In the cold, heat, rain, whatever???! I'd like to see her spend the entire summer/winter outside by herself!! She should've been all over that POS' a*s week #5! I wouldn't give a shiiiit what his excuses were. I'd be all up in his house searching and wouldn't leave until I had my baby back!! She needs to sue and make sure neither him nor his wife can ever work with ANY animals again!

Why have a dog and leave it outside all the time, what’s the point of having a dog? Also dogs need training with the owner as well, not just a dog trainer!!! Why not go to the trainer and collect the dog, instead of accepting all his stupid and obviously something wrong replies? it’s your dog not his!!

As someone who is not only veterinary nurse but also a dog trainer the whole story seems very weird, firstly who wouldn't check on there own dog every week or so to check on the dog and it's progress if she's that busy she shouldn't have a dog. From a trainers point of view dogs make much better progress if the owner is with them rather then handing the dog off to someone else also buy giving someone else the dog to train the dog can pick up on other bad behaviour because the dog isn't living in the environment it's use to ! Anyway the whole story doesn't make sense and I hope what happened to the dog it's happy !

My husband and I left our dog with his parents 2 times. We called at least 2 times a day to check up on him because he gets stressed and sad and we want to know he'd doing good... I would have simply went there every 2 days at least, if not every day. But that's me, others can just wait for 11 weeks........

"- Your dog was bit by a snake. - Yes, I got'ya." Maybe it's my poor English, but is this an accurate reaction in the USA? I mean... Probably it sounds mean, but I don't think this lady had any clue about having a dog. Based on her Fb page this was an "I need a cute dog in my life, so I pick up the most beautiful one, doesn't matter if the dog has any issues or if he's not ok with living outside" kind of story. I went through of this. I was fostering a problematic dog. The couple that adopted him lied to my face to get him. They promised to have together a training immediately and they will treat him in the first quarter - half a year based on his needs. And they were surprised when the dog destroyed their apartment (at my place he didn't touch anything...). So after hysterical messages they just gave him back. I can't describe the dog's condition after he came back to me. (He's fine now and having the best forever home.)

Comment: I would have freaked much, much sooner. Advise: Hound the police to charge him with theft. If he cannot produce a body, he sold the dog, which is theft. The police just don’t want to be bothered. Nobody caring for another person’s dog would bury it without allowing the owner to see the body. As a last resort, get an attorney. Anyone who is that heartless deserves either to go to jail or be homeless.

This > Electronic Attitude < to texting and texting, what about love & hug? Anyway, you seems like a nice person, but more likely this is probably what happened : Your dog is beautiful, the trainer trained her and sold her. 11-weeks? I see a lot of people commenting that she couldn't pick up her dog because she didn't know his address. How does that even happen?!? If I am going to get a trainer for my dog, I am going to be at their place inspecting every inch of it with a magnifying glass! I would then ask for referrals from other clients plus do a couple of checks of my own. I'd want to see the other dogs in his/her care to see how they behave & what training they have had. I'd want to know what training method they use. I'd want to know exactly where any off grounds training will take place, what food they eat, what vet they use, etc, etc, etc. And any reputable trainer would welcome this type of inspection at any time. So how did her dog get in the trainer's care? Was he picked up or just tied to a tree to await his transport?? This sounds like a b******t story to me!!

Yeah I'm a pretty laid back person, but after the 4 weeks and all of those lame-a*s excuses, she didn't think something was up? I mean, it seems pretty blatant to me. Hope she has the funds to sue him or he'll just keep doing this to others. Sounds like he just kennels them - poorly - and charges for that. I checked out this girl's facebook page and she asked for the stories from other pet owners who used Hunter's training services. One person left a GLOWING review and was promptly laughed at. I find both the owner and trainer sketchy. My dogs and horses are my extended FAMILY. I love them all dearly. They receive the best care I can provide, be it food, shelter or medical care. Any training I cannot provide myself is MONITORED personally. I'm there! I'd NEVER turn one of my kiddos over without seeing boarding and training facilities or questioning care contingencies. I don't care if it is a friend or not. I'd never go four weeks let alone two days without checking on my animal's condition... Were I to see ANYTHING I disliked or found suspicious, I'd take my baby home in a heartbeat. We're I this owner, I would have expected an urgent phone call and immediate, emergency medical care for Ollie, may he RIP. In my opinion, the owner was neglectful and failed Ollie, whom she implied a good life by adopting him, and this Hunter person is a deplorable human being and a poor excuse for a "trainer".

My problem is this...if you are a caring parent of a pup like this, you don't just hand over your dog to someone, even a former friend, until you check them out first. You check the reviews and credentials. She stated that she could not find Nelson because of shady addresses. Didn't you go drop the dog off at his place in person? Didn't you check out the facility before trusting this person with your pet? And lastly, if this Nelson is going through dogs the way he is and being shifty with no obvious location, the police do need to take it seriously because this guy may be selling these dogs as "bait dogs" for dog fighting rings. I think she needs to go back to the police with what she's found. This is a criminal case of either fraud or engagement in illegal dog fighting.

What horrible people that commented that the owner was to blame in some way! This man needs to be punished and punished harshly. What he did to that dog was criminal and the asshats at the police station are almost as bad. They should have at the least investigated. It’s easy to judge others and make thoughtless remarks. The owner IS to blame. AND the man needs to be punished harshly. These aren't mutually exclusive. Both are true. She didn't care about that dog. If she did, she would've throughly checked out a person & place she was leaving him with & she would never, ever have accepted excuses for almost 3x the period Ollie was supposed to be there! Nor would she have accepted his supposed death so easily. She even texts that it's "not an issue", but just wants to see the body. Karma will indeed bite some in the a*s, though. You know who? Those who think that's the way to treat a sentient being.

Who gives away a dog for 4 weeks of training? Obedience training is actually training for the OWNER to handle the dog. You do it WITH your dog, not let someone else do it for you.

The term "outside dog" is just wrong- keep your dog clean and safe and loved - animals left outside chained up for long periods are not happy or easy to rehabilitate

The police need to do something about this. It is fraud and he is literally stealing people's dogs! If they don't take action then they must be corrupted. This is just sad. I hope he gets what's coming to him.

A dog doesn't understand "Going away for training..." He thinks he is being sent away period... He probably thought he was being abandoned again and acted up, inciting the Hunter dude to hurt him... Maybe? I dunno... I would never, ever, ever let any other person touch my horses or my dogs or even a mouse in my care... Sounds like these people use these dogs for sport, so they're living tools not pets.

I kind of have an idea on how the owner of the dog CAN get the dog back. There is a phone app (don`t know the name!). So if you call someone, the app changes your phone number, so that instead of your phone number it comes up with "the FBI is calling" or "the police is calling". So the lady could install the app, call Hunter Nelson and threaten him to give the dogs back, pretending she`s the police or something! Sorry if my explanation sounds rushed, i just felt like i had to help somehow, even though this idea probably won`t work. If you think this idea is ok, can you somehow contact her on facebook or whatever social media she`s using? I can`t cause i dont have an account. thnx im just so worried about the dog

This one really confuses me. I feel for the girl for sure, and the biggest dirtbag here is that Hunter Nelson, but even if I did send my dogs away to someone else to train I would've made sure to know where they were first, and that it was a safe, professional environment, and I wouldn't have waited an extra 7 weeks before putting my foot down. Looking at the pics of the dog I'm making an educated guess that Ollie is alive and has been sold. This guy realises how much c**p he's dug himself into and can't figure a way to climb out of it...minus telling the damn truth for a change!!

How does she not know the address? Didn't she drop off her dog at his place? Why was he at a boarding place for training, I thought training was done in classes with the owner. Does no good to train if you don't pass the teaching on to the owner. I'm confused about all this. Enraged because of the terrible circumstances.

My step mom's dog was left in the care of an overnight kennel as she was not in town. The kennel personnel gave the dog a plastic bowl to play with (even though he had animal friendly, non plastic toys with him). He actually ate the plastic, ended up with bloody stools and had a very bad nappy rash from antibiotics to heal his scratched bowels. It's just disgusting how people treat animals.

She doesn't deserve an animal. I'm sorry, but who the hell gives their pet to a person they haven't DEEPLY vetted, never visits the place where your animal is going to be kept, AND THEN KEEPS ACCEPTING FEEBLE EXCUSES FOR 10 WEEKS?! #Shame Not only that, but why didn't she IMMEDIATELY get the police involved?! Why didn't any of the previous people who "lost" their dogs there? WTH is wrong with some people?! And some people say that shelters/rescues are too picky about people who want to adopt. SMH

It's to bad you waited too long, do you have Small claims court ? if so you won't require a lawyer, good luck, sorry for your loss !!

I don't know what he did with that dog but I have a hard time believing the Police about this being a civil case????? They should have driven up to Hunter's place with her to get her dog. WTF is wrong with you people? It’s not the owners fault here! She couldn’t go get her dog because Hunter wouldn’t give her an address or vet info. She wanted her dog to quit jumping the fence and went to someone she knew from high school that owned and operated a training camp for pooches. Cops WERE called and refused to help. It’s 100% Hunter doing all the lying and wrong-doing. I wish I were local to that area cuz I would HUNT that mother-f*cker down and FIND Ollie! To the owner, I am so sorry for your loss. How you and Ollie were treated was horrible. I wish with all my heart you find Ollie healthy and missing you. I hope Hunter gets “bit by a snake,” but I don’t know if a snake would want that filthy, lying, MF in its poisonous mouth.

While it's incredibly sad what happened to this dog, this seems seriously shady from both the owner and the trainer. How do you not know where this trainer works? Where did you go to drop your dog off? You've known him him high school, you live in the same area, track his a*s down. With social media it isn't that hard. I'm sorry, but there is no way I'd go even 1 week without seeing my dog when I was supposed to have scheduled visits. There's just so much wrong with this story and the saddest part is that now this dog has died. Shame on the trainer and shame on the owner for not doing more to make sure her dog was safe.

My only addition to this string of comments is that there must be something to the fact that the two of them had apparently known each other for a very long time, hence her patience/tolerance/seeming lack of concern? If not, then I don't have a clue as to her thinking (or inaction). Not victim-blaming, just trying to point out that perhaps there was a past relationship of some sort? I think the people who are so upset about the dog living outside are not being fair here. As a kid my dog lived outside all of the time, he had an insulated, warm dog house and he was a breed that could do well in cold weather (a very good amount of dogs can) and he did not want to be inside. Snowstorm? He’s still out there. Thunderstorm? He’s still out there. We would force him in if it was dangerous but he was never happy about and would get stressed to the point of shaking and vomiting. If the dog can live outside there’s no problem with letting it do so as long as you’re careful. HOWEVER, do I question this woman’s devotion to her dog? Yes, she sent her dog to a 4 week program and let it stretch out to 11 weeks?! I understand being patient but COME ON! It’s not her fault the dog got resold but I don’t see why a devoted owner would let some of those things happen.

I think it's all odd, Arkansas has a big problem with fighting, dog could of been bait. Easily. I find it extremely lackadaisical on Rachel's part for waiting months literally. Seems like she was a bit daft there - she was - no excuse. I think the police need to investigate both parties, especially the quote on quote trainers. But Also the former owners, nobody waits that long to get a dog, could be a cover up for a bigger issue. I mean just recently in that god forsaken area a shelter was broken into and used as a fight ring, so if they are both hiding something I wouldn't be shocked. Especially after she dismisses he will ever be an inside dog, and waits forever and a day to get real concern going. - The dog needs justice. The humans- suck all around.

There are many, many things I would have done differently. There are so many red flags from this man. BUT, if I hadn't acted before, when he told me the dog was dead, I'd go to his home and wait until hell froze over and tell him you want the body back to bury yourself. If he'd already buried it, I'd say to dig it up. This reminds me of some slick s**t a hillbilly would pull (and I know my hillbillies!). As for now, you need a LAWYER!! Northeast Arkansas is prime duck hunting region and it is very common for hunters to send their retrievers away for training. I'm not saying its right or wrong, but a good bird dog needs a lot of training to be still in the boat/blind, not panic at gun fire, and to not destroy the duck when it brings it back to the hunter. It's very common for people to send their bird dogs away for training.

Well, this goes to show you should only trust people with good ratings when it comes to anything or anyone you value. Because you THINK you know someone doesn't mean they're trustworthy. Also, I don't understand why the police refused to get involved. If you've untrusted your pet to someone and they won't give it back, it could be considered theft, right?

Who the f**k tells someone that their dog died and they buried him and the owner isn't completely outraged? I would never allow a four week training period to continue that long. The first red flag was when he claimed the dog was having issues upon meeting people, and she said she never had that issue... I would have got my dog then. Sort of bothers me she said after all this he was just gonna be an outside dog... sad. I don’t think the dog got bitten by a snake. I think he either abused it and killed it, or sold it. Either way he is a sorry sack of s**t and needs his name and business plastered all over. As for her she needs to find some common sense. He will most likely walk away with a bruised reputation, change his business name and pull the c**p again in the future

I don't understand all the victim blaming on here. She made a mistake trusting a friend she's known since high school to train her dog. There are quite a few programs that will take your dog to train for a specified amount of time and then afterwards work with you and the dog together once the basics are mastered. Dealing with retrievers only, they may have also focused on hunting skills. Regardless of her actions, she trusted him to train her dog. He abused that trust and her dog suffered. That would NEVER be the result! Shame on him and I hope he closes down forever and faces full legal reprocussions for this and is never allowed to do this to another dog ever again. Shame on everyone victim blaming too.

I don't know why she didn't just turn up after four weeks no matter what he said? I would of just head3d straight there when the four weeks was up and demanded my dog back, and if he wasn't there I would of stayed, slept in my car if necessary, to ensure I got answers. It's not her fault that this happened (he sounds dodgy as!) but she seemd to accept his b.s. for such aa long time before demanding the truth or an explanation.

My guess is that Ollie truly died but, somehow, at the hand of Hunter. Either Hunter has anger issues and hurt Ollie to death or Hunter pitted Ollie against unsafe conditions for financial gain. If the latter happened then Ollie’s experience(s) are somewhere on the internet being enjoyed by sadists. I’m only guessing but this guy, Hunter, has got quite a big lie going that he probably uses on everyone. I’m sorry for your loss.

This was long and I really didn't care for the excuses so I skipped parts of it. Still, poor Ollie. I hope the police eventually do get involved or the people who were wronged get together and scrape together enough money to fund a PI and/or for a media campaign.

I really hope she finds out what happened to Ollie. I wouldnt have let things go on so long. Just a thought - I wonder if he was microchipped? If so she could have her details circulated around Vets in the state in case he had been sold and was taken in for treatment. Something very odd going on with this story

I'm sorry. But it was meant to be a 4 week course. So on day 29 I would have gone to the trainer and demanded he'd return my dog or I would sue the hell out of him. And even now I would still sue him for destruction of property. ( In most countries in legal matters animals are considered things or property, not as living beings.)

As a dog trainer and a dog owner I can't believe that it is year 2019 and people ade still giving the dogs away for doggy training boot camps! Come on! Move your but and work together with the dog. Such things happens when you are too lazyto do it and just want to throw some money on the problem!

SMH

After four weeks he said the dog wasn't ready, that tells me his training isn't good, perhaps he does not have a license or not trained himself, I would get a lawyer, find a way to get to his house to find your dog.

I don't care how 'good a friend' or how long I've known someone I wouldn't just give my dog to them or anyone without some kind of documentation and valid contact info. I am surprised she did not do it before sending the dog to his facility.

I know of zero pet owners who would be all ok with their pet being buried somewhere other than their choosing. Both of them are more than a bit off to me.

In fact I would have done a days only obedience class. Take the dog there and pick him up daily. These people don't deserve pets.

There’s no way I’d send any dog to be trained! The best training happens with a trainer AND THE OWNER PRESENT!

This just angered me more and more as I kept reading. 1) this guy’s endless excuses about the dog and 2) wtf did she wait so long to go get her dog??? Poor dog suffered or is suffering at the hand’s of idiots

A lot of you are attacking her so much more than him. Doesn't matter how long the dog was there. He was the idiot who killed it and lied through his teeth

I'm sorry. But it was meant to be a 4 week course. So on day 29 I would have gone to the trainer and demanded he'd return my dog or I would sue the hell out of him. And even now I would still sue him for destruction of property. ( In most countries in legal matters animals are considered things or property, not as living beings.)

I don't know who is more stupid here. Call the cops a the first sign and get a stand by to get your dog or his remains.

What is this 10,000-word thing? Are we seriously supposed to read past the first 3-5 screenshots and follow all 200?
