If anyone has a pet, everyone expects their owner to be caring, loving and responsible. Sadly, some people fall short of this expectation, and we ask ourselves why anyone let them have a pet in the first place. And we’re not talking about being perfect: no one is perfect, but some people are really horrible.

Take the situation that happened in Tutaev, Russia. Somebody noticed a dog hanging upside down from the edge of a balcony, people started gathering and rushed to solve the situation, which could have ended disastrously for the dog. They helped the dog out, but as they soon found out, it was only just a scratch compared to what she had to suffer beforehand. The balcony situation was no accident—Rada, as she was later called, wanted to get out of the apartment.

Nobody knows who saw her first, but somebody noticed a dog hanging out of a balcony in Tutaev, Russia

But let’s start from the beginning. On a day like any other, the passersby heard shrieking howls coming from an apartment building. As some tried to investigate where it was coming from, they saw a terrifying sight — a dog was hanging upside down out of the edge of a second-floor balcony. By the looks of it, Rada could’ve slipped at any moment, and it could’ve ended tragically.

The locals quickly mobilized to help the dog out of a dangerous situation, where she was hanging on for dear life

As time passed, more and more locals started gathering: at first there were seemingly only children (the video itself was captured by one of them), but soon enough the adults came to help. Somebody provided a ladder, and a man rescued Rada. All seemed well, but only for a moment; everyone immediately noticed that something wasn’t right about the way she looked.

The rescue operation was successful, and at the time, nobody realized the extent of her damage

Everyone was shocked at how poor the dog looked, even children realized that she was in very bad shape

When Rada came down the ladder in the man’s hands, people gasped: she didn’t look healthy at all, her ribs were easily visible, and even the naive children realized that she was starving and weak. This, of course, raised some questions about the owner, but at the time, Rada’s health was more important than justice, and somebody rushed her to the vet.

The dog was diagnosed with anemia, a blood condition where the blood has hemoglobin deficiency

Image credits: Рада – собака из Тутаева

While she was there, she got diagnosed with anemia, hemoglobin deficiency in the blood, which was probably caused by a long period of starvation or malnourishment. In addition to that, she was clearly exhausted, scared, and traumatized. But the good news was that she started getting treatment.

None of the nearby shelters wanted to take the dog, but an hour after the news broke, one person stated that the dog was taken to the clinic

The local animal shelters were less than hospitable to Rada and didn’t want to take the poor dog under their wing. But as one door shuts, another one opens. Some good-willed volunteers and the “Do Good” animal protection society managed to find her some food and a roof over her head.

The people were curious about the situation and wanted to figure out what happened. Apparently, she was held prisoner by her alcoholic owner

As for the owner, well, the story is very complicated. Turns out he’s well-known to the police, and the officers were frequently called to the apartment, but for other matters. Russian newspapers reported that the owner is a drunkard who frequently drank with his friends, often made a ruckus, and even refused to let police in after they’d been called to manage the situation. But things continued; the owner didn’t care at all about the fines. Local volunteer Galina Ionina filed an additional police report for animal cruelty.

The police had been called on the owner numerous times before. He was fined, but didn’t care at all and continued his cruel behavior

The investigation revealed that the owner just heartlessly left the town and locked up a cat and a dog in an apartment, leaving them to die. And sadly, despite her pain, Rada was still more lucky than the cat: Russian reporters told that the cat didn’t survive. Poor kitty…

The people at “Do Good” animal protection society took over the custody of the dog

She’s getting better day by day

Despite the horrific event, the dog is in good hands now and is on her way to recovery

I saw this far too many times during my years working at the Humane Society. How a person can neglect to this point and something in them doesn't go "whoa this is wrong" just completely baffles me. Being euthanized would be kinder than starving to death! I hope this dog finds a wonderful home.

So glad that a place like this exists in Russia, so that this pup can get well. These photos are heartbreaking. Thank you to all the neighbors for their caring response and quick action.

As it's in Russia, it depends on where you are and how reliable money transfers are. You can always volunteer or donate to a local shelter. But ALWAYS RESEARCH beforehand. Scams are even more likely nowadays as people have gotten exponentially more desperate since covid-19 hit and "Do-Gooders" like Animal Shelters are an easy draw bc they use our empathy against us to scam more money.

she looks just like my dog. same coloring and everything. my dog was abused and never allowed to leave her kennel is wat her rescuers think. my husband was told wen he got her before meeting me that she was in a kennel surrounded by nothing but her own pee and crap she also clearly wasnt feed enough or given enough water she never made a sound which makes them think she was hit anything she barked or whined bc she looked as if shed been hit many times. she was also extremely afraid of men and still is except my husband, father in law and brother in law. they r the only men shes not afraid of shes iffy around my dad she doesnt kno wat to think bc she recognizes the scent bc of boxes of my stuff he helped pack and well hes my dad so naturally he will smell like my parents house too. she didnt like wen my dad came near me wen my parents came to our apartment, got nervous wen he talked, even got nervous wen he handed her a piece of cheese. my mom she was ok with she handles women strangers much better then men. my husband told me wen they first got her and brought her into the backyard she was afraid to go on the grass which basically confirmed the fact she lived in her kennel 24/7 she didnt kno wat real grass was. wen we walk her its a nightmare she zig zags, pulls us, has to smell everything its like a new adventure to her every time. its been 7 years and since my husband got her as well as since me and my husband met. weve been married for a year and still to this day out of the 7 years hes had her no one understands y she took a liking to me instantly. she doesnt like anyone from my husbands side of the family which r ppl she should like. for some reason im an exception to her stranger danger mindset but i became her favorite person after the 1st year of being with my husband the next 5 years was that bond growing. wen i first moved into my inlaws house she was so happy that i wasnt leaving anymore. shed even check to see if i was still there in the morning wen she woke up she stopped after a month or 2 once we made the basement into an apartment she started doing it again. she went from this afraid of ppl, malnourished, dehydrated and hurt puppy to this big mush of a healthy happy dog with anxeity problems. shes still afraid of strangers, loud noises (except fireworks and thunder she fine with that), things shes never seen that make noises, us swimming in the pool (constantly barks and tries to "rescue" us) and goes nuts if anything and i mean anything is on our property. it is funny wen she barks at strangers tho, she all big mean and scary if shes inside they r outside but if they come inside she runs to the back of the house and barks from a distance. she talks a big game if they cant get to her but shes really a big loud chicken lol. i hope this dog will go thru the transformation my dog went thru it deserves a loving home and happiness just like my dog. abused and abandoned dogs need the loving care more then pet shop dogs. its y i always say adopt dont shop

“The local animal shelters were less than hospitable to Rada and didn’t want to take the poor dog under their wing”. I don’t think it’s fair to label the animal shelters unhospitable. If they don’t have the resources to care for a very unwell dog who is going to need particular care requiring both time and money, then they don’t have the resources. Before animal shelters are criticised, I wonder if those critics contribute to animal shelters with time or money themselves?

Not condoning what he did to this poor creature, but... My own father became an alcoholic after my mother divorced him for being injured on the job and unable to work again. (She neglected and abused both of us.) And, none of the medication was helping deal with the excruciating, constant pain he was in. It's a disease, not a choice, not a party. Often when people are around a person/pet every day they don't really "see" them properly... especially obese pets and "secretly" pregnant teens for example.

This is all too common an occurrence. This is a dog that came to me thru my rescue group. The people who did this to her received no punishment of any kind. Fortunately, this little girl was saved, and went on to live a long and happy life with her new family. desperata1...3e9c36.jpg desperata1-2-615a3e83e9c36.jpg

I couldn’t even look at these pictures. I saw the one at the top, covered it with my hand, then speed-scrolled to the bottom just so I could leave a comment here about how much I’d like to meet the person who hurt this beautiful dog. God people are horrible. Seeing that emaciated dog through the bars reminds me of my last rescue, of guinea pigs at a backyard breeder. They were so emaciated that they kept falling through the bars of the carrier and I had to carry them in my jacket instead. Despite all the footage and veterinary reports the authorities still did nothing. People who treat animals this way need actual punishment.

There is a special place in Hell for people who abuse animals. But here on earth they should be starved and beaten just as they do to the animals they are so badly abusing. It's pretty simple...if you don't want to take care of an animal, don't get one. Damn this pisses me off!!!

You all commentators here act like this b********y did happen for the first time. There're even worse situations, when animals are deliberately tortured for the pleasure of the b*****l evil sub-human murderers - (cut, burned alive), thousands of them, every day. Support, join, those who fight against animal cruelty, sign petitions, go to protest, donate money - every little helps, the power is in the number; apathy, indifference of billions of "good" people toward animal cruelty is what will destroy ALL life on this planet. Unfortunately, the murderous and destructive species will die last.

Proves who the real animals are...wish they have a very special slot in hell if it exists. If he didn't want the dog, he could have have it away. The shameless owner needs medical help. He is definitely not in his right state of mind. He possibly imagined his enemy in the poor dog, and as helpless as he himself is, he imagined his enemy to be so. This guy deserves jail time and a real good time in community service.

I'm not sure "enemy" is the right word. I think it's more like "Beer Goggles", which is when one who's been drinking "sees" another person as sexy... until they sober up. But it seems this man stayed forever drunk until they became "Booze Blinders" against reality.

Abusing animals is WRONG. I agree with TheAnimalLady. The man who did this can't be excused because of his past, but we at least have to have some understanding and compassion for him. Alcoholism is a horrible, horrible disease that wrecks lives and goes hand in hand with increasingly devastating choices. I hope the man gets help to get sober, own up to his actions, make amends, and live a normal life.

So glad that a place like this exists in Russia, so that this pup can get well. These photos are heartbreaking. Thank you to all the neighbors for their caring response and quick action.

Especially seeing his housemate the cat starve too. I just took a moment to imagine what it felt like living there. I wish I hadn’t done that now.

I send prayers of thanksgiving to those neighbors who helped and got this dog the support she needed. I would love to know if it's possible to forward financial donations for this poor animal's care.

This sweet little being who’s never asked for anything beyond love, food and water. I mean I just REALLY REALLY want to MEET THIS PERSON.

Shelters are probably overcrowded and the funds to help this one poor creature could have helped many dogs. Not being callous, but I've been doing this for about 30yrs and know the realities of it.

Thank you, being able to see both sides is a blessing and a curse. I can understand and help others (people & animals), but my extreme empathy allows them to trigger my sympathy and manipulate me. It's a fine line to walk and many people misunderstand it.

Please tell me they put his address on social media. He's lucky I don't live there. Please God let somebody go over and shove the fat end of a baseball bat up his ass. Or someone else said brand his forehead, I'm good with that too. People are disgusting, we've ruined this planet which truly is or was a paradise. Maybe its time for evil people to experience the abuse back, I bet people would stop abusing animals if they knew the price was a forehead tattoo or a pineapple up their asses.

Not cool, this happens ALL over the world. More often in some countries than others, depending upon the laws and IF they are enforced. It's like a SYMPTOM of a deeper problem, and it perpetuates itself. Nutshell: It's NOT a Race Thing!!!
