In a world where traditional art often takes center stage, Kamila Majcher dares to challenge the status quo with her whimsical and delightfully irreverent art project, "Very Ugly Plates." Combining a keen eye for vintage aesthetics with a sharp sense of humor, Kamila transforms ordinary porcelain plates into extraordinary pieces of art that are anything but conventional.

"Very Ugly Plates" is a celebration of the quirky and the unconventional, capturing the essence of modern humor through classical designs. Each plate features hilariously unexpected phrases juxtaposed with charming vintage imagery, creating a unique and unforgettable visual experience. From poking fun at everyday annoyances to delivering laugh-out-loud social commentary, Kamila’s work resonates with those who appreciate the art of not taking life too seriously.

Join us as we delve into Kamila Majcher’s creative journey and explore the world of "Very Ugly Plates," where every piece is a conversation starter and a testament to the beauty of humor in art.

In this project, I use two types of plates. The first type is plates that have pictures already on them, and in that case, I buy all I can find, as even though I don’t have an idea for them right now, I can use them in the future. In my workshop, I have around 300 plates like this, and some of them have been waiting for their turn for a few years.

Another type is vintage plates with nice decor, and the main criteria for them is that they must have enough space to make my design on them. Also, the type of porcelain and glaze is very important, as not all of them can survive the 900°C baking process.

For me, the most important criterion for them is to avoid being obvious. My work is to discover a story behind the picture and tell it within a few words. That’s why I usually don’t use my drawings for the plate-making process. When I create a picture, I already know the story, so there is nothing to discover in it. I’m an observer rather than a participant in social interactions, so I catch a lot of funny situations and thoughts that are inspirations for my plates.

Once, I was participating in a market in Warsaw, and some person was passing by my stand and looked at my plates and said, ‘Disgusting,’ and walked away. That was cute.

Sometimes, I hear that I create memes on plates. Yes and no. Yes, because they are pictures with text and they are funny. No, because I consider memes to be a ‘fast art.’ The effort of creating a meme is smaller, and because of that, you can touch very current topics. Topics that nobody will remember in some time. My creation will stay with you forever and can be passed to your kids and grandchildren, so it needs to stay funny, even in 30 years. That’s why my plates are touching more universal topics that will also stay funny in the future. I’m also very proud that, because of my project, a lot of young people started collecting plates and putting them on the wall.

Currently, I’m focusing on Very Ugly Plates the most. I opened my gallery in Berlin, Germany, so I don’t really have time for anything else, but hopefully, this year, I will also present my other project called Naughty Granny.

Inspiration for this plate were my parents. That was what my dad said every morning to my mom to wake her up

But that didn't stop the 24-hour "news" spewers from complaining about it.

I feel like the next scene would just be her holding a pillow over the girl’s face.

I don't recall that lyric, but it would have made the song more compelling.

Either she's incapable of joy, or someone named Max really let her down. Or both.

I don't get it, but it made me giggle. EDIT: I got it, and I laughed even harder.
