Our Dog Was Getting A Human Sister, So I Built Her A Room Under The Stairs – It Turned Out Better Than Expected
Molly the Westie found out she was going to be a big sister to a little human so I decided to build her a room of her own under the stairs before the baby arrived.
Nothing existed there before, it was walled-in. I wasn’t sure how big the space was, or if it would even be possible, so was very happy with the end result… as was Molly!
We are currently doing well in the myBuilder ‘Project of the Year 2017’ competition and you can vote for me here if you like it!
More info: mybuilder.com
Molly in her new, finished room
She is the best wee dog who had been very spoiled up to this point, so we didn’t want her to feel less important when the baby arrived!
And here is the proud big sister with baby Catelyn!
Starting point… I thought there might be dead space behind the stairs, but wasn’t sure. Trying to sneak a look
If it was going to work I also needed to move the wiring for the house alarm system. Decided to update the kitchen at the same time, by adding tongue & groove panels
Space cut out… I can now see what space we have to play with
Bigger than I thought, around 4 square metres
Most importantly… don’t want Molly to be scared of the space, so in for an early look. Definitely going to be big enough!
Door frame fitted in keeping with the internal joinery, base of frame kept in place as integral to support staircase
Plasterboard fitted, starting to look like a room
In for a sniff and helping with the plastering/sealing
Feature wallpaper gives an idea of what’s coming next
View from inside the room
Colour changing mood lighting installed
Molly waiting patiently as I had to finish the tongue and groove outside her room first
Flooring goes down
And skirtings for the awkwardly shaped walls!
Custom signs
Molly still waiting patiently, has taken the new couch in the meantime
So I bought her one for her new room
Finishing touches, photo frames and luxury bed
Pictures of Molly at school with her friends
All moved in, proud as punch!
Posing in her new space
Loves the cosy corner
Finishing touches with her sign and peronalised leash/harness hook
Luckily she likes her new home better than the one in the garden!

Share on FacebookAbsolutely fantastic project! Great use of space, it makes so much sense that a dog has his own space in a house, after all they are members of the family too, and they have junk that needs putting somewhere so why not in their own room? Btw her new room is cozier than mine, lol.
Even four-legged children deserve a room of their own too. I love it!
Load More Replies...It looks like the apartment I lived in when I was a college student.
Same here, although I'm sure Molly's smells better.
Load More Replies...That is absolutely adorable. I wish I was your dog. Molly is for sure one spoilt pooch. And she is gorgeously cute too. Hope she loves her new big sister duties.
Wait until they find the doggo and human sibling in here together :)
This is the sweetest thing! We have a giant dog and I didn't want to have a giant crate taking up space in a room, so we gave him space in the library. He has his own couch in there and we can close the doors over to give him quiet time. He loves it! Oh Molly, someone loves you so!
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I wish you much luck in the competition.
Absolutely love your idea and efforts. I just love Westies. Had one for seven years. His name was Benji like the dog in the movie. But I hd so much fun with him and walking thru a park. This guy loved chasing squirrels up trees and barking at oncoming people at my door. In a way He helped put me back on my feet after heart surgery. What an excellent pet to have. And He wasn't just a dog to me but a companion. I enjoyed all the years with Him all the way up to His last. Great pet and great friend always!!!
What a brilliant idea looks absolutely amazing lucky molly ,I used to have a westie called milly molly Mandy she was beautiful as well.xx
I've never really been a dog person at all (just was raised that way and naturally I gravitate more towards birds!) but my sister and b.i.l and the kids just got a maltese and she is so cute and this type of thing would be great, but my b.i.l. and sister are not home DIY people so they would have to hire someone to do this at their place. It's a fantastic idea and you are so awesome for doing that for your dog, more importantly too the dog actually likes the space (would not be fun if they didn't acclimate to the space you made for them out of love!) Great job! Thanks for sharing it all with us!
Yay Molly has a plush pad! Nice to have parents with construction skills!
I was thinking the same thing if he hadn't made the room for Molly(which is awesome or pawesome) it could have just as easily been used for storage
Load More Replies...And i thought my dog was spoiled!! What the f**k!! That dog is living the dream!!
Such a loving thing to do for your dog! Bravo!! It looks fantastic, I hope Molly enjoys it for years to come!
LOL ! I read "Dog Was Getting A Human Sister, So I Built Her A Room Under The Stairs" and they meant the baby got the room under stairs.
As a doggy person with two furs of our own, I think this is the most fantastic project and post ever - seriously. I love it. Thank you.
Very imaginative upgrade. I'm surprised that space was not made a storage space, when the house was first built.
in no way do i mean the drug, the dog is just really cute
Load More Replies...This is an absolutely fabulous project! I'm completely awed by the work you did here. This is adorable!
Please add me to the waiting list for if and when Molly wants a larger space with its own wine bar and jacuzzi. I'm absolutely OK with "simple." (Do you need a phone number?)
You are an amazing parent! I wish every domestic pet has a parent like you! I can only ever dream of doing as much as you did for Molly!
I feel like my dog would be happier sleeping on my bed like she does now...It was a great thing to do but dogs don't really understand major acts of kindness like this, as long as they have humans to cuddle XD
Load More Replies...So cute! So much wasted space under the stairs in our house too. Maybe we will make one like yours for the kitties. The one in the garden is cute too.
She looks like my little Daisy. She was black and white, but started turning grey and she got older. She's in Heaven now. I called her my little problem eraser. I miss her. She taught me my most valuable lesson, That I am worthy of being loved.
Anyone else wondering how they will keep a crawling baby out of Molly’s room??😂
You, Sir, are my favourite kind of crazy about your pet! I have to add, though, that I now have three very upset kittens requesting equally adequate personal (petsonal???) living quarters. They demand we move to a house with an unused staircase... pardon me, three unused staircases which I am to transform into luxury catdiminiums immediately. Thank you for that...
Wow I really loved that! :) what an awesome idea. Absolutely agree the dog needs her own space n is part of the family
Careful someone at the bottom of this loooong list of comments named “I Hate Cats Kill All Cats” is really getting ramped up just because of this super cool and adorable posts title..
If I found a man like this I'd actually consider marriage and kids.
Saw the builder that did this for you. He does amazing work! Nice find chap! Wish I was your dog!
So neat. Well done and good for that lucky dog. (lovely baby pic with big doggy sis too.)
Nice work, I'd be interested to know if Molly uses the room. Dogs are social animals and don't usually like to be alone, so I'd be surprised if she used the room unless someone was near by. I don't think the work is wasted though, I can think of someone who will turn that room into a great den.
Yip, she uses it a lot. Often after a big walk she'll sleep in there for a few hours. And if the house is busy with too many visitors she'll take herself away in there. But she's still very sociable and spends most of the day where ever we are 👍🏼
Load More Replies...Dude that is better then my room...Hopefully my dog doesn't expect to be spoiled so much, haha! Love it though, if you have the money and time, that is truly a wonderful thing to do for your dogs :)
I love everything about this. What a lucky dog and you have amazing taste! Where did you find the personalized leash/harness hook?
Thanks 😂. Thats from Next in the UK

I'm jealous of a dog's room... it's adorable! You have just given me inspiration for a project!
This is amazing! I couldn't create this, not in a million years! Well done! What a sweet doggy
wow what a transformation and a spoiled dog molly is! what i liked most was the job itself! good job indeed!
Great job, you got robbed of square footage by whomever built that place.
This is the greatest thing ever! I absolutely LOVE the wallpaper you put in her room. Molly is such a little cutie. What a lucky little puppy she is. :D
wow and wow again fit for a furry queen, wait till baby sister get older sleep overs will be on,. what an amazing use of hidden space. you go molly your couch is flasher than mine
Absolutely brilliant, I can see the owner moving in with the dog when she needs a bit of peace !!!!!
Well, I thought the little house was for the newly born... Which I think it will be the case when Catelyn grows up! Be ready for the takeover, haha!
Even our fur babies need somewhere they can go to be alone if they want to. Adorable little room.
I LIKE IT. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PURPLE LITE IS NO. KUDOS FOR INDULGING YOUR PET. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE! I WOULD GET UP SEVERAL TIMES A NITE EVERY NOTE TO FEED MY LATE CHER. LUCKY I HAVE NO PROBLEM GOING BACK TO SLEEP.
Several times a night?!? I’m guessing your dog was overweight and stop yelling!
Load More Replies...Awsome job !!!! I wouldn't mind sharing the room with Molly If I were a guest ... Now your precious Caitlin couldn't be cuter . I can take my eyes off her. I can ser you guys are very good at creating fantastic things and gorgeous lives. Kudos.
Brilliant & adorable! Lucky dog--and a real cutie too! I bet when Catelyn starts growing up, she & Molly will have tons of fun playing in there together!
Firstly; awesome job! #2 I don't see any pictures in her room of her human family (I'm sure she would like that). And best of all, the resale use of that room can be a child's hidey-hole or storage space.
Molly will have a cute, little retreat for when Catelyn is feeling fussy. Then, She and Catelyn will have a lovely "Girls Only" play house as soon as Catelyn figures out how sweet Molly's little retreat is. They will also need an Instagram page.
Bigger than my first apartment. All we did was get out dog a new pillow bed. Better not let him see this.
The only type of dog house that should be built is Indoors with the family. Love this.
Funny how Molly wants nothing to do with the house in the garden. Sometimes you can't figure out what the objection is, they're simply having none of it.
What a great project and cozy dog room. And, of course, when the human sister gets big enough she will LOVE hanging with the little dog in their "secret hiding place" under the stairs. Bravo!
OMG! She gets a bedroom, much, much better than mine. Am dying of envy. Lol...
Molly and her little sister are going to have so much fun together in that new room. Such a wonderful job, you are an amazing parent.
Couple years & little Catelyn's going to be crawling in behind Molly.
Absolutely lovely, love the wallpaper. How wonderful of you to care so much for a little dog, she looks like she loves her room.and I bet she loves her daddy for building it for her. So much love and care went into this project,
Pretty good that. Well done. Great use of space. Westie's are great dogs!! my parent have had 2. Miss them both :(
This is wonderful. Definitely brought a smile to my flu-ridden face. Congrats to wee Molly and to you folks on your little girl.
The fake fur rug from IKEA, the 'One Spoiled Dog...' one from Pets at Home in Scotland... can probably get one online no problem.

Great article and DIY project. Nothing like a cozy rustic fireplace. If your DIY Divas have more DIY holiday ideas, consider sourcing your lumber supplies from Rustic Lumber: https://www.rusticlumberco.com/our-products/
I have a question about your wall? is that just some type of beadboard that you painted gray?
Hats off for your appreciable work! Really very great pictures and I love te pup very much! All my love towards him!
I feel Molly does deserve her own little habitat! After all she is part of the family ! And owning a Westie myself for seven years I can see why this was built ! Have fun Molly in your new living quarters!
What a brilliant project and Molly's room is wonderful. This will be a project for my other half to get his teeth into! We may need to 'borrow' you for a few days!
Btw great work of art n pet project!!! How cool is that, I've always favored pets and the extreme we can do for them! Remember folks they are a high percentage of what keeps us in check!!
I so love His cute little condo! He looks well complacent there. I think I see a happy Westie there.
Love your new apt. Pup. I'd live in it it if it was big enough! You're so cute. You look just like my pet I had years ago. A Westy Highland just like you!!! AAAND...... He was a Westy Highland Terrier just like you !!! Have fun barking at the at the other critters !!
Nice apt pup. I'd live in it to. Looks just right for you. AAAND, you're so cute, you just like my pet I had years ago.
This is amazing, how intuitive! I love how creative you can be with small spaces. We converted the space under our stairs too, into a study room. We used a contractor from The Builders Pal, and they were amazing, can't recommend the contractors on their site enough! https://thebuilderspal.com/
Great way to occupy space. Especially for sweet pet like Molly. Owning a Westie my self years ago, found so much fun and excitement. Benji his name was and so suitable for him. But on the room, well done and perfect size for her. She seems so comfortable and happy with her own room.
I started to cry from joy. I bought tent to my cats for summer, animals get melanoma too. Maybe i need two. Now they are getting know to it.
What a lucky dog to have such caring parents! She looks so proud of her new room and happy too. Great job guys. Just love it!!!
You are very talented. Don't be surprised if this is the beginning of a new business!!!
waaay better than the first apartment I had as an adult. and I still live there... kudos to the fur-parents!!!
I love it! We don't have that in our house, so my dog has taken over my room. I have a queen sized bed, but have a 1 foot wide space against the wall for myself. Her extra bed has taken over my yoga area, and her treat shelf has replaced my sewing area
Thanks for sharing, we have a small house and wanted to convert our under stairs cupboard in to a dog bedroom. It is not as big as yours, but I hope they will love it. You have done an amazing job.
