On the 10th April 2016, Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima announced his retirement at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center. Now, a selection of underwater photos taken of the Olympian are set to go on display at the Tokyo Olympus Plaza from 17th – 22nd June. The photographer is none other than ex-swimmer Junya Nishigawa – a graduate of the prestigious National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya, previous Olympic candidate and ten-year record holder for the fastest 200m swimming freestyle in Kawaga Prefecture. After graduating and working as a pro-swimming instructor, he picked up an interest in swimming photography. He is currently Japan’s leading underwater sports photographer.
His works hold a great sense of presence and power, immersing the viewer in an exciting underwater world. Nishigawa is no doubt a professional, yet he claims he picked up photography by studying by himself. How did he get so good?
