Artist Adds ‘Star Wars’ To Boring Thrift Store Paintings

If you enjoyed Chris McMahon’s remakes of thrift store art, you’re going to like these as well. Dave of Arrowhead Vintage & Goods also salvages second-hand landscapes to transform the discarded paintings into surreal sci-fi scenes.

He alters old, forgotten artworks by adding pop culture elements to them. The artist also performs these makeovers with such dedication, the end results look like something the authors of the originals intended all along. From the classic Godzilla to the recent breakthrough Rick and Morty, Dave’s collection has something to offer to most fantasy fans out there.

Star Wars, however, is the franchise he enjoys working with the most.

Arrowhead Vintage & Goods specializes in everything from vinyl and home decor to clothing and jewelry, so these paintings shouldn’t come as a complete surprise to people who visit the shop in Canton, Ohio. If they could enter it.

“I have always done art for fun, just novelty weirdo stuff but when covid hit, I had to close my vintage store,” Dave told Bored Panda. “My wife and I started doing our website full time trying to keep afloat. She made masks and I started painting. Both really kept us busy and we were really glad to have the work.”

Dave started the series with an old landscape he had already had; the artist himself thought it was beautiful but couldn’t sell the piece even for $5. “After a couple of years, I decided if I was going to throw it out, I could try and do something interesting with it. I think I added a fallen AT-ST, half in a lake, and Ewoks fishing off of it.”

The artist said he spends a lot of time analyzing and learning to “match” the painting’s style before he actually begins working on it.

Before the pandemic, Dave used to get old landscapes at thrift stores and garage sales but acquiring these things isn’t a problem now as well — lately, people have been cleaning out their houses and bringing them to him directly. “It’s great,” Dave said. “Usually, I only spend $5 or $10 each, not much.”
