The school year start may be a delight (or dismay) to millions of kids around the globe. However, it’s important not to forget that, in some parts of the world, even an elementary school education can be a hard-won luxury. Some of the children have to take the most dangerous roads in the world to receive the education that some of us may take for granted. If school way might seem boring to kids in wealthier countries, these little ones are surely glad to have a chance at a better future. This list we collected will show you just how determined some children can be when it comes to getting an education; especially with the dangerous journeys and long ways home after school they have to endure.
According to UNESCO, progress in connecting children to schools in third world countries has slowed down over the past couple of years. Areas that lack suitable school routes can often flood, making it even harder for kids to commute. Dangerous paths and the obstacles on the way to school are one of the main reasons why many children decide to quit education.
The solution might seem straightforward: build roads and bridges, buy buses and hire a driver. However, the lack of funds and recurring natural disasters in many countries make it difficult to provide children with the solutions they so desperately need.

How much children struggle to get education inorder to improve their future prospects. I will definitely show this to my students and also my children. Every one must realise the value of education.
Please say the kids are okay even if they fall off of that broken wire bridge.
Nice Article. But the photo "School Girls Walking Across A Plank On The Wall Of The 16th Century Galle Fort In Sri Lanka" seem to be taken while on a school trip. Galle Fort is a popular tourist destination. Not a remote or rural area. Again nice article. Love from Sri Lanka. Hope you would visit our beautiful country someday. ❤️.
These people spend a hard time to improve themselves, attending their school classes, going through a very dangerous truck
These people spend a hard time to improve themselves, attending their school classes, going through a very dangerous truck, it is impressive
Helicopter parents would benefit from this article to help them realise how safe their children are.
I rather die than go on a mountain just so you can go to school.
I want to tell some thing about the photo that taken in Sri Lanka. Actually that heading mislead the story. That old fort situated in the busy city Galle , not a risky or dangerous place to people and there are many roads , offices , schools and private residences are located inside the fort. And also , the fort is a famous tourist destination for locals and foreigners. This photo seems some school girls with their teacher , walking on the rampart (not risky or dangerous at all) and crossing a 'cut' safely.
zipline I think it would be fun. climb 125 miles I think it would be dangerous. broken bridge would be an adventur
What bravery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5 of these places are in Indonesia. I wonder why I'm not surprised.
If the parents are allowing their children to risk their life to go to school, what makes you think they have the education to be able to homeschool?

This will make children more fiercely independent. I'll show this to my future kids. Nephews. And my siblings.
These photos are incredible! Education is such a rare and precious commodity that we dare not take it for granted.
The girl flying over the river.... (Kids Flying 800m On A Steel Cable 400m Above The Rio Negro River, Colombia) - Admiration!!! and respect.

These children has a very strong determination no reason at all NOT to go to school
You forgot one. Palestinian children must run a gauntlet of violent Jewish settlers to and from school. See EAPPI.
I think you hate Jews. It is interesting that you fail to mention so many Jewish Israeli children who are not alive because they were murdered by Palestinians. It is so much more comfortable to spread lies about Israelies , isn't it ?

the Kids in Europ shoul watch all this. So they will never ever blame the Busdriver while beeing late.
Wow. Some people really have to work hard at getting their education
Am deeply touched by all these images,i salute all these pupils s courage .Its a lesson to all of us,we should never take school for granted
The goverment much like to spent more on its budget on military equipements rather than constructing roads in rural areas.
And I thought walking 10 miles daily to school in Kampala Uganda was hard life!! I would go back to the 10 miles instead
it's so powerful and sad :( please don't forget the Palestinian children who are passing through Israeli checkpoints on their way toschool
Favorite part: "After the story spread... PT Krakatau Steel built a new bridge so that the children could cross the river safely."
Very unfortunate but at the same time very amazing to see kids taking so much risk to go to school.
Son imagenes para compartir a todos los seres comodos que viven en Buenos Aires y desertan la escuela secundaria!!
My concerned is that, in all these contry now that lack basic functional means of education, governers leave lussery life sgandering found..
The Sri Lankan example is just kids jumping over walls at a tourist site. The stairs are to the left. Come-opted to sensationalize!

THIS IS WHY PEOPLE HATE AMERICA, TODAY'S YOUTH HATE GOING TO SCHOOL AND THESE KIDS WOULD KILL FOR A BUS RIDE
This dedication to education is profound. I have to share this with my students, family, and friends and if possible the world at large.

They embrace their situation but decides to go to school…I hope I can help more kids in school & have a better future!…show this to my son!
Cruda realidad que enfrentan muchos estudiantes, admirable la necesidad de educación por encima de poner en riesgo su propia vida.
What I can say is only, ALLAH be always with them. They cope everything, strive unceasingly and cross the worst roads in older to learn .
hats off to the kids who are going to school inspite of these difficulties.everyone should ;learn from these kids.

My students in NC say: "It isn't worth it". "Its crazy." "I wouldn't go to school". "We are lucky that we live in America and we have buses.
And here, the school bus stops every block or so to pick up high school kids. So much for complaints about childhood obesity in the U.S.
How privileged we are in comparison to these children. We get motivation after having come to know about such children.

Pic relating to Sri Lanka is incorrect. Galle fort is a historical place & does not have a school. This is a pic of students on a trip.
Once again, we have a lot less to complain about and yet we always complain about the little we do.
Yep, Using this as a geography map study launch to find the locations noted on the pictures.
I think this is completely taken out of context. Are they just making a school trip or going to school? Come on...
These kids have a soul of determination just to goto school. I liek how, they just don't care about the dsnger
Shocking! I`ll email to my colleagues and friends. Can be a powerful message to children, young people and families we work with.

Politicians in those countries need to help their people. They have enough money to build proper bridges etc, so why don't they?

Education is so important as proven by the dangerous journeys these young ones make. Bless and keep them safe.
I won't complain when I had to walk up a steep hill to the bus stop in the snow, when I was a kid..... :)
I looked at this expecting a photo of kids trying to go to school in the West Bank. That's really dangerous, tear gas, beatings, kidnappings

I'd still choose some of these over walking to school when it's -40 degrees out haha. Fairbanks, Alaska.
I think I'm playing hooky today. Where is OSHA when you need them???
I found it nice and i want very much the way, climbing on the ladders
Heck man, i agree education is very important, but Cant the local government or Volunteering org's try to provide wooden bridges or somethin
Still more dangerous, students going to schools under gunfire and risking being kidnapped or killed by a sniper or an explosion in Syria!

Courageous should replace the sensational title "dangerous" here. What is more dangerous is disallowing students to learn.
Some of the ways are really fun, like flying in the cable in Colombia, but I don't understand how they come back , trough the jungle in India

I had to take my bike to school... uphill. :P I feel so spoiled (though not as spoiled as children who were always brought to school by car.

If I were one of those students I would be scared about going to school just because of the journey.
Load More Replies...this is very dangerous and its crazy, it is not normal 5A ahi koleji
I live in Galle Sri lanka and there is no way students have to go cross the Galle fort like that. I think all the other pictures are legit
It's even more crazy when you realize her little brother is in that burlap bag. I watched a documentary on it.
Load More Replies...great learning tool and fantastic resource for english and social science could be used for all ages!!
Even looking at these heights makes my stomach turn. These kids all look happy and confident and eager to learn. ( I live below sealevel!)
Incredible pictures about the struggle that some kids go through to LEARN. And stupid comments about the suffering in a first world country
I think somebody should fix up those things for the kids can be safe
Who knows some of these schoolchildren might be the Prime Minister or President of their country and improve their educational system !

Is anybody like the bill gates foundation doing anything to better their situation. If I had that kind of money and resources I'd make a few
Load More Replies...WOW!!! Obviously parent of these children highly value education. We are very lucky and I take that for granted!
goverment should take a look a it because "the children are the future".
I am student, and I dont want to travel like that, I mean, my parents want let me go to school to come from it.
heeem..., indonesia has 5 nominators in this nominations. How poor we are...
Amis des sensations fortes..... bonjour ! On a pas à se plaindre avec nos grêves des transports annuels.....
some students have the opportunity to study in better conditions, but they don`t grasp it.
Perfect for my pupils! On the first school day I told them about children in some parts of the world going through ordeals to get to school!
If kids did this in America, they would WANT to go to school. They simply have no drive because entertainment is less than an adrenalinerush
This traveling itself is education!Kids of the wealthy world getting weaker with no risks,no danger.Only knowing 'how to behave',how to obey
Wow! A lot of nice fake pictures! Chinese are clever, they get funds raised then spend it building communism !
I will definitely demonstrate it to my university students to compare and develop their critical thinking and add to their motivation.
Thank you for these brilliant photos - a "must share"! - in a world where so many with so much get so stressed out about such little things!
No comments, just Salute to these kids, these kids, there are people in this world that realize the importance of education!
I don't think that the Chinese government has been defeated to build bridges across those rivers! This is just a publicity stunt!
Struggle for education. Hope improved situation sooner for better education.
I'am out of words. It is soo sad really it is so sad. What is the job of the government in these areas? mxm and the little boy Lebak yooh
Amazing Images. Impossible to believe. That has to help us not to complain
Wow. The power of education really comes alive seeing the stories of these kids. I pray for their safety and for more accessible access.
I want to add the story of Palestinian children in At-Tuwani (West-bank) http://tuwaniresiste.operazionecolomba.it/?p=3255
This has made me realise that the we are spoilt by touch of buttons for everything!
I'm really ashamed with my country. Almost all of them are from Indonesia. I hope my goverment will solve these problems soon.
We have engage the Government of these countries and see that they take immediate action to alleviate this dreaded situation. Let's do it
and parents drive our kids to school when they live less than a kilometre away!!!!
the Kids in Europ shoul watch all this.
*co-opted. I wonder how many of the others are twisted to carry a point. We're all just an unidentifiable Brown mass to be pitied right?

I'm going to show this to my 8 years old boy who is participating to Unicef fund racing because he wants to help other children.
These are very determined people, and this is a must-see, in all privileged schools.
THIS IS WHY PEOPLE HATE AMERICA, TODAY'S YOUTH HATE GOING TO SCHOOL AND THESE KIDS WOULD KILL FOR A BUS RIDE
This dedication to education is profound. I have to share this with my students, family, and friends and if possible the world at large.
oh god.. i remembered, i was so lazy when i had to go to school. even need only 5 minutes to get there. how shame on me
They just want to survive, survive from the beast of "life" that always had own rules about "life". May GOD always give them power..aamiin.
They cope everything, strive unceasingly and cross the worst roads in older to learn .
hats off to the kids who are going to school inspite of these difficulties.everyone should ;learn from these kids.
creo que esto lo tiene que ber los estudiantes de todo estados unidos y otros paises donde no quieren ni lebantarse los estudiantes para ir
In the journey of life....you have to do what it takes to capture that
hey, what happened to the link?! it supposed to lead to the "17 most unusual beaches around the world"!!!
They obviously never went to Oldborough Manor in Maidstone. Hell on Earth, that was
My students in NC say: "It isn't worth it".
I think Nepal has been missed out! There are remote villages in Nepal where students take dangerous path to get to school everyday!
I think Nepal was missed out. There still are remote villages in Nepal where children travel Dangerous path everyday to get to school!

as an Indonesian, I'm so sad & shy at the same time. some officers corrupt the state & local budgets which failed infrastructure development
WHO EVER THOUGHT OF DOING THIS SHOULD GET SUED! THEY SHOULDNT MAKE KIDS DO THIS!
I can't see any kid not wanting to do some of these. I know I'd like to! But others? Yeah, home school will do.
I think we should all be very thankful and repentant each and every day!
Children in the Eastern Region of Ghana cross the Volta in canoes driven by 10-12 yr olds. Sometimes they drown on the way.
They should add some schools in Africa. For example, there are schools inside the masaai Mara in Kenya.
What about this way? Its from Nepal... https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=934630306553300

Amazingly beautiful. And I thought we did school differently in our family. With world school.
It's remarkable what children wouldn't do to get to school and get educated. We as Belgian have certainly not to complain about it...
Sending my thoughts out to those children who are not able to go to school for political or for health reasons
Wait.. My 1$ still hasn't forced these governments to provide for their people?! Sally Struthers...I want a word with you!

I think our children should quite complaining about having to ride the bus for an hour or so.
The kids in the Americas have no clue how lucky they really are. America. Mexico. Canada. They are all so amazing and if ur born there ur LUCKY
It makes you want to cry, pray, praise & hold your breath all at the same time.
Well I think that kids here in America should be thankful to God that they have school bus to cone get them
And kids in the West Bank run risk of being deliberately run down by Israeli settlers in cars or shot by Israeli snipers on way to school.
They have so much to share when they are done their school. UN Bodies has so much funds for this "pitiful and thrilling scenarios".
schools r nt d only source of learning. kids need not go to school. the school can come to dem. neighbourhood aunties uncles can teach dem
Thank you Julija for sharing this, the photos really capture how big their spirit to get an education. It's just powerful :)
1. teach kids at home till kindergarten or grade 5. 2. turn some students into teachers to teach own village ppl so saved from long travel
i am so thankful that i did not have to make such dangerous journeys but there can be solutions to make it better or different. such as this
i am so thankful to God that i could go to a school nearby without making all these dangerous journeys...but there can be solutions to this
Pic relating to Sri Lanka is incorrect.
Images about how people fight just to get an education and Americans on here fighting over the name of a country. -___- #dumb.
Is there an organized group working on making travel to school safer? I would really like to help.
I think is not rio negro Colombia, maybe is rio negro Ecuador. I´m saying that because when i was child i had to cross the river in that way
I will show this to the school children i work with. This will motivate them to take their education seriously.
And we used to think crossing the bay and running up the slip on stormy days was risky.
pakistan is also in one of those countries where pupils have to journey miles in different rural areas
this images are indeed powerful and thought provoking, lest we forget leaving a mark in the lives of such communities!
They forgot female teenage school children walking though 60 mph blizzard in 35 below actual temperature and a 70 below windchill.
Thirst for education in India & China have forced students to travel with all the difficulties shown here, China has shown result, India to
I am speaking for Sri Lanka as the picture taken was not students going to school but on a trip as I have been there and walked that plank.
hats off to their perseverance of learning....i salute to these pupils....
Time to bring school to the doors, electronic media such as internet at community level, which is cheaper , it helps preserve the nature.
I think people should stop name calling. Be kind. We have bigger issues to worry about rather than how to spell Columbia versus Colombia.
sigh...and I think its just happening in Indonesia, the government need to step up their effort to accommodate this children going to scholl
Unbelievable, how government and some of us are so ignorant.. I am from indonesia n i believed the picture is real situation. N worse durin

I'm shocked here in America we take so much for granted I'm complaining of the humity just to drive with no air conditioning a block away
Amazing, wonderful and wondrous on how the need to learn shall be accomplished any possible way
oh my God! i feel so blessed and sad for even though we're poor but we don't experience this kind of hardship on our way to school.
This is crazy I will never complain aboutwalking to school ever again
Many place in world look like this, but are there anyone give a hand to help them while government still exist and do nothing
inspirational images; no matter it's spelling but the message is very important which highlight the importance of Education, the key pillar

Wow! Any of these journeys would be unthinkable in Australia! OH&S rules would ban every single one! Brave children, wish each one well!
We Should be contempted, because everyone is not as opportuned as we are.
WOW! Just reminded me of how blessed I am. I hope all those who go through so much trouble to get to these schools have the best teachers.
i wonder how of many of them died crossing those paths and nobody cared? they were going to school
Inspirational! My children believe that riding a Vespa Scooter to school would be too dangerous. American children have it tipping easy.
We should be grate full for what we have and admire this kids for what they do.

How about this? It's in Vietnam http://tv.tuoitre.vn/tin/9016/qua-song-bang-tui-bong
A strong picture of corruption in many countries affecting the children, keeping things the same for generations to come.
In the picture of girl travelling to school on a bull... Is apparently a buffalo she is travelling on...
what a beautiful incredible story what this children do to get to school, rain or shine they want to go to school.
Politicians in those countries need to help their people. They have enough money to build proper bridges etc, so why don't they?
Too many of you are worried about the spelling of Colombia and not appreciating what these children go through for an education!
Too many of you are worried about the spelling of Colombia! Look at what these children have to go through to get an education!
This is ridiculous! And I thought gettin up at 7:30am to walk 5 feet was bad! :-P
This is amazing. The courage and will power goes beyond the limits. Salute to the spirit.
Still more dangerous, students going to schools under gunfire and risking being kidnapped or killed by a sniper or an explosion in Syria!
here children complain about busses that are overcrowded, or having to cycle in the rain, or walking 3 km because the buss was late etc etc
Vidya dhanam sarva dhane pradhanam Education (Vidhya) is the best wealth among all the wealth anyone can have.
:'( I pray God that they remain safe all the time! And make them succeed as they deserve it! Y^Y
Here in America we have to yell children out of the bed to make it to the bus stop on time!! Count your blessings
Heartbreaking...They really WANT that education. We should be thankful living here.
Courageous should replace the sensational title "dangerous" here. What is more dangerous is disallowing students to learn.
Some of the ways are really fun, like flying in the cable in Colombia, but I don't understand how they come back , trough the jungle in India
Thank you for this insight... I do pray that safer methods of transportation arise out of this awareness.
makes the show naked and afraid look like child's play Shame on discovery channel !!!!!!!???????
Galle Fort In Sri Lanka - These girls are not on their way to school. They probably have come on a trip to this historically important place
Brings a whole new meaning to 'back to school' ! But some if these children might find taking a streetcar through downtown terrifying!
They are truly brave ... I'm am so thankful to my mother who drove me to school
I had to take my bike to school... uphill. :P I feel so spoiled (though not as spoiled as children who were always brought to school by car.
The poor horse in Delhi India. Those kids do not deserve to be included. Shame on them.
All those kids riding the horse cart in India need.to get off their a*s and walk to school, that poor horse pulling all that weight, shame
Amazing journeys. Must include the students in Chacago, who risk thei lives in the streets.
