An immense spectacle: the reflection of an entire country revealed by the ruling dictatorship to tourists. North Korea continually and systematically offers the same imagery... Anyone wishing to record the real life objectively, film or photograph in North Korea, will be sorely disappointed.
Tourists, such as journalists, are told to take images from a particular spot, or a specific angle, and above all, according to a set-up that is written and played out by "actors." They built a hermit kingdom of dreams for millions of real people in a half-century. Leaders of the communist party have written many incredible idiotic quotes about their revered people and declared North Korean society as the best in the world. But between this philosophy and reality, there is a considerable gap. My work was providing evidence of the difference between real life in North Korea and the imagination of the leaders.
