Dad Constantly Steals 17 Y.O. Daughter’s Food, She Deliberately Starts Adding Lemon To Her Food Because He Is Allergic To Citrus

The internet is full of wholesome and not-so-good advice on parenting, what is better to do and what not to do for parents in any given situation. This is really very convenient and new parents can only be grateful to have these experiences shared with them. But what there is very little of on the internet is advice on what children with naughty parents should do.

Just imagine a teenager who loves their parents very much, is on good terms with them, but for some reason they do not like some particular feature in their behavior. You can talk once, twice, thrice – but nothing changes. In fact, there is nothing really bad or offensive about this behavior, it is just annoying. What to do then?

With such a question, the author of a post in the AITA community turned to redditors, and her post scored 742 upvotes and about 130 different comments. The Original Poster found an interesting solution to her father’s problem, and just wanted to know if it was right from other people’s point of view.

The Original Poster is annoyed that her 50 Y.O. dad constantly takes her food behind her back

So, the OP is 17 years old and over the past year, she’s been noticing that her 50 Y.O. father has been constantly taking her food wherever she leaves it. No matter what the girl cooks, no matter what she brings home from work or from school, as soon as she left it unattended for a while, her dad immediately ate it.

Not that the daughter was strongly against it, but gradually it began to get on her nerves. Just imagine – you brought home something tasty and healthy from work, looking forward to eating it – and then look – the yummy has already been eaten. This, you see, is a shame.

The girl tried to talk with her dad but with no results at all

And it’s also a shame that the dad didn’t even ask permission at all – he just took and ate, and moreover, he didn’t inform her that he ate something. The girl was strong for a long time and tried to talk with her father, but nothing helped. As a result, she had to move from talk to action.

The OP started adding lemon juice to literally everything she cooked or brought home as her dad is allergic to citrus

The fact is that the man is allergic to citrus, so the daughter decided to add lemon juice to literally everything that she cooked or brought home. Of course, she warned her father that there was lemon in the food so that he could avoid health problems – but now the food stealing has stopped.

The OP admits that every time she told her father that the food contained lemon or lemon juice, he got very upset. As a result, the girl began to worry about whether she jad really offended her beloved dad, and decided to ask redditors for advice.

Image source: JuliaC2006 (not the actual photo)

People in the comments approved of this idea and it also turned out that the OP is not alone with this problem

We must say that the people in the comments supported the OP, arguing that she did everything right – firstly, coming up with a solution original enough to cope with her father’s childishness, and secondly, by making sure to warn him about the lemon in his food so that no health problems will arise.

Needless to say, some commenters told that the OP that she is not alone in her problem with her father, and many parents have a similar thing. For example, one of the people in the comments said that they specifically began to add pepper when cooking in order to wean their mother off of stealing food.

Moreover, such tricks even form people’s eating habits – for example, one of the commenters also began to cover all their food with parmesan, because their father always liked to taste his kids’ food, but he hated parmesan. As a result, the commenter now cannot even imagine their meals without this cheese.

We wonder if your parents ever took your food without asking, and if so, how did you cope with a similar problem? Also, let us know what you think about this story, or better yet, tell us your own in the comments.

People with allergies who steal other people's food are honestly just irresponsible and are asking for whatever they get. Natural selection.

This. And stealing anyone's food is trashy but it's especially bad if you're stealing your own kid's food. I think putting lemon in it is a smart idea.

He shouldn't be eating her food without permission regardless of food allergy or the seriousness of food allergy. If it fatal, it's his fault, not hers..he ate her food without permission. Honestly, I would send him a bill of the total cost of what he's eaten and get a mini fridge for the bedroom.

Thecmini fridge is a great idea, but she'll have to lock the door as well, as I'm sure the glutton would still go after it.

Ugh, I had a son-in-law who scarfed up on everything in our refrigerator and pantry every time he visited (before and after the wedding). Never asked. There were some items that I “hoarded” because they were hard to find. He ate through all of it. That sob!

I agree that is a s**t thing to do. I have a younger brother that won't work and comes over just to take what he can get including more then food. It is terrible to dislike someone or even hate them because of it. So at the end of the day it is just food. You can still fight them for reimbursement tho. They want to steal from you steal from them until they stop taking.

NTA. Yes, I am compelled to add thoughts. I worked really hard to buy food to put into the refrigerator in the apartment that I helped pay rent and electricity bills. My mother urged me to quit school to work more, boss found out and made me go back following year. I started hiding food and money in my room. When it disappeared, I decided to have friend install a lock. She threw me out. Her loss.

Did I read it correctly that your boss made you go back to school after found out that you quit school because your mother made you to? If yes then your boss is more of a parent than your mother.

My "father" was diabetic and I have allergies, a lot of them. I would come home from middle school to find that any food I could eat was gone because he'd eaten only my food all day. Nothing stopped him. He even ate a huge bag of Halloween candy I had. The bag was full and hidden on a shell none of us could reach without a chair and put there when he wasn't home. Came home to him sick on the coach and yelling at me for making him eat my candy. Some times you need to get aggressive or you may end up a resource holder like me.

That is insanely weird. I can't imagine my father ever eating anything out of the fridge that I personally bought unless it was something I specifically bought for the entire family like lunchmeat or something and most definitely not my leftovers. That is just so bizarre to me. Idk maybe I just grew up differently, but my dad is much more of like a "traditional provider" type of parent. He never even ate any of the stuff that would be considered "kid food" like snack cakes and such... So that's really just too strange to me.

Right? Even when I was OP's age, my dad didn't do this. He believed what I bought with my money was mine. Now I'm 39, and he will won't touch anything I put in my parents' fridge unless explicitly told he can have some.

Rub the lemon on the insides and edges of the plate and you don't have to put it in your food. He's being rude. He wouldn't do that to anyone outside of the home because he knows it would be disrespectful so he should apply the same principle inside the home regardless of who it is. I can imagine that he'd probably get upset if the shoe was on the other foot. I respect that you tell him beforehand that the food has lemon in it.

My food used to get stolen on a regular basis from the breakroom fridge. That quickly stopped the day I brought in some BBQ chicken that I injected with a Scotch Bonnet based hot sauce, about 1 million Scoville hot. The thief started eating the chicken and started screaming in pain. His whole mouth was on fire. The food theft stopped and I never felt at all guilty.

Hubby almost always helps himself to anything I've put aside for myself to eat later. If I buy 2 chocolate bars, he'll invariably eat both. It's ridiculous but I have to hide my share where he can't find it. It's ridiculous and sooooo annoying

How annoying; I know because my late husband did the same thing! Now I would give him ALL of everything, just to have him back, but it really was annoying! I mean, he would eat entire boxes of my favorite Girl Scout cookies, in one sitting, swearing he couldn't stop himself! Of course, that was ridiculous! I finally resorted to hiding a spare of whatever. Lol! I did smile when I read your comment, so thanks for that; I miss him like crazy!

My older sister always asked you for your food. Than she takes a big piece if you say no to her she starts whining to my mom. She does that to everyone. Or she goes to your house collecting food. Ask her for her food and she won't give you nothing. My cousin was 3 he asked her for one of her sausages she told him no. She was about to get up and throw her food away. She had all this food still he took a sausage and put it in his mouth she calls him a greedy bastard. Dude he is 3 and was hungry. You was throwing that food away. His mom wanted to drag my sister. She gets everyone in trouble. So everytime me and my daughter knew she was going to be around we would add raw onions to our food she is allergic. We laughs everytime she asks us for our food. We inform her it was raw onions in our food. Lol she is 45 now and still haven't change. Her own kids can't stand her because of that.

It's not citrus but giving that level of spice to someone who isn't prepared can actually close their airways and send them to the hospital if not kill them

Had the same problem w someone stealing my lunch from employees' fridge, sometimes part but often while thing. Until I added a note to guess which item(s) had the hidden Ex-lax in it. Only had to do that for a couple days (it's invisible in brownies, btw), till it stopped. Dad is no different. Stealing is stealing and he's been warned.

NTA! This sounds as if he has some kind of compulsion that he could at least try to control. I doubt he has been very hungry for exactly everything you bring into the house and just can't help himself! I don't know what makes people do things like this, but it is definitely a sign of something other than hunger!

So after that I would only order Buffalo Chicken Pizza from papa John's they put bacon on it. I normally don't bring pork into their house but since he wouldn't stop eating my stuff that I brought just for me I didn't care. He got a big attitude talking about I am sinning. I said you sin when you stole my food fake Muslim. I haven't been back my sister kept asking for me to come back. The day I do that I would stay at a hotel and meet her out somewhere.

OP, NTA , but you hoggish father sure is TA. Great solution to put lemon in your food. I love the way it brightens food so nicely. Professional chefs do add lemon to savory dishes quite commonly. It's also awesome in pastry. That's beside the point, admittedly. I am a bit surprised that your mother has not enjoined this issue and helped you resolve it with your father.

Because females don't resolve issue. They whine and complain and get bitter and take it so they can be martyr. Then want to poison or do harm to get back and then they go to their friends and say im right? Right? And here we are.

To the people saying "you ate the food that he bought when you were younger", "he's your dad, the least you can do is feed him", "he needs permission to eat in his own house?", 1. I think y'all forget that as his job as a father, it's literally his responsibility to feed his child. If he decides to SHARE his leftovers, then that's on him. But anything he buys from anywhere that's not just his is for his child. 2. He can feed himself. He's a big boy. And your children literally owe you nothing so let go of that fantasy before you drive everyone crazy. 3. He needs permission to eat his almost adult daughter's food, that she buys. It's not her job as a DAUGHTER, who is still a minor, to feed her FATHER. He can eat whatever he bought with his money in the fridge.

Lmao, I had the same problem with this kid I was raising. She was always eating my food even when I got her her own, she always raided the fridge late at night and would eat everything, even the stuff that I packed for lunch at work would be gone in the morning. For years she did this and thought nothing of it, now she's 17 and started working, still living at home eating the bulk of my food but now I get to eat some of her stuff too, hehehe! She brings some things just for herself and expects it to stay where she left it, lol, she gets so annoyed when I eat it but I guess that's life right. Soon she'll move out and I'll probably still have to give her money to help out with her apartment and bills but that's ok because I love her and that's what parents do right, well if she doesn't kill me first with lemons.....

I used to work in HR for a company and would always get food theft complaints. HR Manager refused to allow cameras to be placed in breakroom. I just happen to leave a cheap gopro knockoff one day and discovered why my $15.00 boujie tuna melt sub disappeared. Knowing said HR manager had a severe shrimp allergy i started having some shrimp ground into it. One day my boss starts getting sick. I mentioned to the paramedics she ate shrimp she was allergic too. Lost my job because she was sleeping with upper management and apparently adding shrimp to my own food was attempted poisoning of a coworker. Still worth it

My father would "forget" to feed me and my brother all through my childhood. We lived with him, so at times it was a critical problem. A saturday morning i found both bread and cheese, so I made myself breakfast and went into the LR. Sitting there was my "dad" looking at me with utter disgust on his face, asking where his plate was. I gave him mine, and sat there while he ate it. When he asked my why , i told him i lost my appetitt and he was content with that answer and went on with his business. And thats the last time I ate breakfast at his house, because no way i was going to let him steal food out of my mouth again after everything.

What kind of an AH parent takes food from their child? Yes she is 17, but she is still his child. If that AH was my father, I'd go on a lemon rage and put lemon in everything (labeled) in the fridge for an entire week and tell him that he's an AH for taking food that doesn't belong to him and the fact that he's been forced to eat cold cereal or get take out for a week is punishment for him being such a s***y father.

My stepmom kept stealing food and beverages from me, especially when I ordered them online. She recently asked why I stopped ordering things and I retorted with "I don't know; why do you keep stealing from me?" And she just pouts and grumbles without answering.

Reading all these anecdotes about people who eat other people’s food, it is clear that in most cases, it’s not about the food, it’s about power and control. The person like OP’s dad want to demonstrate, consciously or unconsciously, that they are the top dog in the household and have enough power to have what they want and everyone else has lower status. They may do it covertly by sneaking or stealing the food or they may do it overtly like the guy who would take big bites out of his kid’s sandwiches. I bet none of them are otherwise great parents.

I came from a family of 8. My parents were very giving to anyone, food there last dollar whatever. I just couldn't imagine getting upset because a family member ate my food I bought for myself, whenever I got something special food wise for myself I always bought 2 just if someone wanted to try it. My mom was a good cook and so was my dad, they used very little spices because of how they were taught to cook. In my teens I was in culinary arts made loads of things none of us ate before. At class we could buy like TV dinners of the foods we made that day. You could purchase them for like 50 cents. I always bought a few and took them home so others in my family could try what they normally wouldn't get to. I was brought up to share. I'm sorry I'd never co.plain about someone eating my food, I'd just buy extra.

Ok so I'm allergic to onions. Most of the time my hubby shares his fries. Whenever he doesn't wanna share his fried item he will get onion rings. Sometimes people are ok with sharing, sometimes no. Difference with us is we communicate about it and listen to boundaries, obviously your dad isn't listening so it's different

Poor guy he must be starving. May be your mom or you or whomever is best at cooking should have plenty of cooked meals available. Most families that have constant cooked meals don't have this issue, as everyone is sharing from the big container.

I think the commentary have lost their marbles. He's not taking his daughter's boundaries seriously. She, herself, describes this as a minor inconvenience. Ya'll act like he committed rape. He takes food without asking, nit someone's life. Some of you are advocating for capital punishment. Insanity! Daughter has solved problem with another mild inconvenience to her father, but wants validation her actions are right since there is this power dynamic and Father apparently sees nothing wrong with his actions so he continues to cross daughter's boundaries, perhaps in a subconscious effort to maintain the power dynamic, that as king of his house he has a right to any food brought into it.

What I'm not quite grasping is why this father lives with his daughter.... If this is HIS house and HIS regrigerator and HIS powerbill, I fail to see why squatter food has any claim to be called hers. Parents are not your roommate. They OWN that space. If you want privacy, move out. If you want private food, you can store that on your own dime. You park your car in a random location out in the world, it's going to get towed.

You all are bitching about OLD FOOD? Literally, cooked nutrients have a shelf life... you're getting nothing out of, "leftovers." And, moreover, leftovers are a symptom of poor eating choices; you should grab LESS food than you think you will eat, as a GOOD habit. So, you're all bad eaters. You all diet poorly. And you all support "take out" restaurants. If you ask me, you ALL deserve to be miserable anyway, so continue about your ignorant business, life as usual, it's not any different. A difference could be made, however, if you JUST STOPPED EATING TRASH LIKE A RACOON

Ok, if the dad eating this person's(OP) food is the ultimate disrespect, maybe the OP should look into moving out. Who pays the utilities?? Who pays the mortgage or rent where the OP lays their head??? Who raised you and did for you as you grew up and matured(questionable word) because you aren't acting very mature. Would you bother to shed a tear if your dad failed to wake up the next morning after you've b!#@$ about him eating your food?... My father passed suddenly in '07, the very week of fathers day. I would sacrifice every morsel of food I've eaten since then to have back 1 hour to be with him. And all the OP is complaining about is some food. MOVE OUT!! You are working(you stated this in an earlier reply) or stop b!#@$ and bring him something to eat as well. And you wouldn't have to worry about your funky food getten eaten by the dad you say that you love so much.

If she doesn’t live in a house he pays for has said something about food she brings home. To that I spent years working 60 hours or more a week and coming home to eat leftovers my teenage daughter cooked. Or brought home from work it was part of getting home after everyone was going to bed was just expected she would leave notes if it was something she was saving. I just asked her if it was upsetting. She is grown now. Said nope she was just doing her part of helping out.

I would say because of the way I grew up she is the one in the wrong. If you live with your parents it doesn't matter if on pays for most of the bills they are a partner ship, that's what it means to be married, you need to know to share. Growing up my father beat it into us that any food in the refrigerator is for everyone living in the house. When you have some you eat when you can. If you are full maybe your brother isn't. Dog eat dog world. But learn to share or leave the house. You could also buy your own refrigerator and keep your own stuff. But when I see families do that they are more like strangers living in a home together.

It is not about her unwillingness to share. It is the lack of respect he shows by not asking. Read closely the OP says this. As parents we HAVE TO show our children respect our they grow up to be disrespectful to others.

WHO pays for this kid's food? WHO pays for this kid's housing? While the daughter may not have asked to have been born, she should be grateful to have a parent who doesn't throw her out, pimp her out, and all of the many other atrocities that exist and ARE REAL for far too many people. Creating the potential to create a condition that could KILL her parent is not worthy of praise. And people wonder why I believe that birth control should be free...

Interesting... We eat our parents food all those years as kids, and now that we can afford it, we want them to ask our permission? Did you ever have to ask for pemission as a kid to eat food at home? If that's the one thing that really annoys him: 1) make it clear to him, 2) always prepare some extras, and eventually put your portion in a box with your name on it and one with his name on it (and maybe something that days "for work!" Sharing is caring!

Rub the lemon on the insides and edges of the plate and you don't have to put it in your food. He's being rude. He wouldn't do that to anyone outside of the home because he knows it would be disrespectful so he should apply the same principle inside the home regardless of who it is.

When I was 1st dating my now hubby-we went out to dinner one night. I was 18 and he was 22 at this time(20yrs ago now) His dad was working late and asked him to switch trucks with him after we were done. So we go to the hospital where his dad works. My doggy bag was in the truck cuz I couldn't finish my steak. His dad grabbed the box and started cave man eating my steak. I was sooo 😳🤯. My now hubz just acted like that s**t was normal. I then realized my hubby was going to need some "house training " if we were going to stay together. Has worked 20yrs so far. Lol

I have a bro in law like this. He eats everything up. I went down texas to help them out. Left my daughter with my mom. My sis was bed rest with her high risk pregnancy. They had 3 other kids. He worked 3 hours away. After the first month of me being there he stop going to work and ran the streets spending their money on anything. I have given them money for bills and things. He was gone for a couple of days sis just got home from the hospital baby was in ICU. I order the kids pizza since that is what they want and my General Tso Shrimp. I ate half of my food put it in the fridge. He came in that night he ate my food. I wrote my name on the container and wrote do not touch. He tells me in their house people can eat whatever they want. Bull c**p my sis buy stuff just for him and Nobody eats it. But it was my private food that I spent my money on. I'm was in a different state helping them out when I could of been home with my daughter who turned 16. I couldn't even throw her a party.

Right under the bed. And anything that needs refrigerated gets pushed in the back where he's too lazy to dig for it and I put notes on it saying I BOUGHT THIS -B so he knows that if he eats it it won't be mom's wrath, *It'll be mine.

Sometimes people are ok with sharing, sometimes no. Difference with us is we communicate about it and listen to boundaries, obviously your dad isn't listening so it's different

She should be aware that any allergic reaction can turn into anaphylaxis, even if the allergy was only an annoyance before. That can kill him. Find some other method.

If you have a food allergy you shouldn't be eating random food without first knowing what's all in it. But either way, sounds like the person told their dad lemon was in it.

How do you know that she is not ALREADY paying rent? She says she buys her own food. He is just being a glutton.

My parents' attitude was they allowed us to be born - how we felt about ANYthing was inconsequential. Dad ate your food? Find something else in the frig.

I'm sorry you were raised that way. That lack of respect and manipulation from parents is never okay.

I bet if this was the mom it wouldn't even be an issue. Feel sorry for dads now a days. Females get to be men hating straight from the home.

I solved this issue by moving out of my parent's house.

So, you put food in the refrigerator that he pays for in the house that he pays for and he's supposed to ask permission to eat? Really.

She mentioned in one of the comments that she lives with her mom. I'm guessing she's not always with her dad, but maybe I'm wrong. Either way though, she's only 17. Unless she gets emancipated, if she lives in the US, she may be stuck until she's of age. At least she has a job though.

When my daughter was 17 we were still mostly feeding her. And I didn't steal her snacks, but I did sometimes steal some money for cigarettes to which I was addicted, and she still wasn't such a spoiled b***h about it.

Yeah, you're an a*s and probably he is too . It's annoying that he eats your food, I get that. But to deliberately make someone sick is irresponsible.

If you know you have a food allergy you shouldn't be eating other people's food anyways. She could bring home something that just has lemon in it and he would get sick when he stole it. You get sick for stealing something that wasn't yours anyways seem like karma.

Is it stealing when you eat the food your dad bought.
