And it’s statistically more likely that this number included a bigger proportion of cats than it did dogs.

In context, the U.S. is estimated to have roughly 90.5 million homes, or 70% of the total number of households that own a pet. Among these, there are more dog owners than there are cat owners.
The good news is that there are about 4.1 million animals that end up adopted from shelters each year, with more stray dogs than cats returning to their actual owners per year. So, the ball is definitely rolling.

However, the fact that there are still around a million dogs and cats who get euthanized annually means that there isn’t enough adoption and population control happening.

Folks consider the decline in euthanizing shelter animals to be a hopeful sign. One of the main factors for this decline is adoption and stray animal-owner reunions. However, when the minimum required period to keep an animal in a shelter is as low as 48 hours, with the typical being 5 to 7 days, time is of the essence. Also, just 5 states—California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina—alone are responsible for half of the euthanasia.

However, they do go out of their way to make sure every animal finds a forever home and the no-kill shelter count has actually increased over the years, which is another hopeful sign on the matter.

PSA: if you love your pet, SECURE THEM during a car ride. Them getting scared and trying to squeeze on the driver's lap or behind the brake pedal is no fun, and them becoming a 50km/h (or 35 mph or whatever) torpedo against the back of your head or through the windshield is neither. I know I'm kinda spamming, but if it helps for just ONE person to secure their pet and avoid a dangerous incident, I'm all up for the downvotes.

I adopted a wonderful little black cat in July of last year, and today I had to have him put to sleep because of felv. Greatest little guy in the world. I'll miss ya, buddy.
With these posts I often wonder how many of these are actual adoptions, i.e. from a shelter or similar. There are a lot of puppies and kittens of desirable or expensive breeds on these lists, and you don't normally find those in shelters. I think some people use the phrase "adopt" somewhat losely!
And what is wrong about this anyway? If we get a pet, for the most of us it is a family member. You take care of it, you feed it and you watch it grow and conquer the world. So what is wrong calling it adoption? For our girl my husband an I are called mum and dad and if I talk to her I either call her little sparrow or my child.
