If you consider yourself a person who loves pets and can’t pass by a dog or a cat without petting them, there is a big chance that this thread of cute hedgehogs kept as pets will brighten your day. Even though there are a lot of people who have already met a hedgehog somewhere in nature, having one as a pet is also possible. But how much is there that we don’t know about hedgehogs?
Hedgehogs are small nocturnal animals that are well-recognized for spikes on their back. Right now, more and more people tend to keep hedgehogs as pets. But what to do if you find one in your backyard? British Hedgehog Preservation Society created guidelines that explain how to help these little creatures if you find one hurt or in danger. This is important in order to make sure that the number of hedgehogs in the wild doesn't decline.

Hedgehog Teefs
Passed Out
A hedgehog’s back is covered in quills—thick spikes that are formed from keratin. Their spines are known to be used for defense, as in the case of danger, they simply roll into a ball. But how, then, are people able to hold their pet hedgehogs on their back? According to this blog dedicated to teaching people about hedgehogs and their care, it might take a while to gain a hedgehog’s trust and be allowed to lay them on their back.

In memory of my best friend, Goliath. He crossed over the rainbow bridge late January, and I was too distraught to post about it. Time has passed and I miss him every day. The goodest boy.
If you decide to get a domesticated hedgehog, there are also some important things to take into consideration. There are quite a few pros and cons of having a hedgehog.
These tiny little creatures actually need a lot of care and attention, even though they don’t need to be taken for a walk at least two times a day. Hedgehogs are different from other pets as they are not furry and they are more active during the night. It also takes time for them to become comfortable in a new environment and around people. It is also necessary to change their food and water every day.

Hedgehogs are perfect for those who don’t have a lot of space but still want to have a pet as they don’t make loud noises and they don’t emit bad smells. Hedgehogs are also a great choice for those who are allergic to dander. They don’t require special vaccinations like other pet animals, so if taken care of right, hedgehogs should only see the veterinarian for their annual checkup.

I love animals and feel so bad for hedgehogs being in the hands of just about any unqualified person. Most of these creatures are being exploited as poseable toys and accessories with no thought as to their needs and comfort.
Hedgehogs require special care and are not normally social creatures. They are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day. I wish the editors of BP had been more responsible and used this extremely long pictorial to educate people on hedgehog needs and habits. Most of these images show what we interpret as the hedgehogs smiling and happy. That's entirely inaccurate. Those are their faces, not smiles reflective of human emotions.

I wish I could show yall a picture of my 5 month year old Jasper...though hes usually too active to get a good picture in
The hedgehoge ist a nocturnal animal. How do you ensure the hedgehoge gets its 10 km per night of running and hunting?
It's an unhealthy trend to keep "fancy" wild animals as pets. Hedgehogs shouldn't be kept, they can impossibly live a good life in captivity due to their needs

I live in CA, and hedgehogs are outlawed here (Non-native species). I'd be a perfect hedgehog mom. I'm nocturnal too!! I wish we'd be able to get them!
I was born in Australia and my family moved to the UK. When meeting me for the first time my Aunt gave 3 year old me a toy hedgehog. When she told me it was a hedgehog apparently I said 'Nah it's an echidna!' I'd never seen a hedgehog before and the only spiked animal I knew about was a huge marsupial.
They're cute, but these are different form European hedgehogs. Those are wild animals that aren't suitable for keeping as pets. I have a few that visit the garden overnight.
My stepsiblings had a pet hedgehog, but he died last year - these pictures kind of make me want to adopt another hedgehog.
Do some research (care, longevity, what stresses them out). Check for health issues and for local vets who can actually treat hedgehogs. Don't assume that a regular vet can treat every hedgehog problem. One if my colleagues had one and it didn't live long. He's actually very good with animals, but it got stressed out, in part from going in and out of hibernation and needed a lot of care.
