Israeli contemporary artist Ronit Baranga (b. 1973) uses clay and porcelain to craft some really surreal art and disturbing tableware that would probably instantly make you lose your appetite. Already known for her strange sculptures, Baranga applied her creepy creativity to the kitchen, putting realistic mouths and fingers on cups and plates to create these unique dinnerware sets.
“I would like that anyone who sees my realistic sculptures feel something – what they feel is not relevant to me, as long as they feel. I hope that the emerging feelings will cause the viewers to think about the ideas behind my work… The combination of ceramic cups with ceramic fingers represent an idea in which the still creates a will of its own, enabling a cup to decide whether to stay or leave the situation it is in,” said the artist.
Although this weird art might seem a little jarring at first, there’s something quite sensual about the hands, lips, and tongues protruding from the ceramic works. It’s hard to keep our eyes off Baranga’s disembodied figurative art, as much as we want to. “Viewers of my work almost instantly react: they are either enthusiastic or appalled, but never indifferent,” Baranga explained. “I hope that their harsh physical reaction stimulates them to think about the ideas and content that’s derived from my art.”
Check out her impressive, ceramic art sculptures below. Let us know what you think of these uncomfortable pictures – would you use these cups and plates at home?
