Context is everything. Without it, some seemingly innocent images might not even make you do a double-take. But when you know more about what’s pictured, your reaction can be completely different. Raw. Visceral. Full of fear. On the other hand, some photos ooze evil and immediately turn on our fight or flight (or freeze or fawn) response.
Today, we’re featuring some of the creepiest photos ever taken, as shared on the immensely popular @fasc1nate account on X, formerly Twitter. Scroll down to take a peek at them, and be sure to share your thoughts on the photos in the comments at the bottom of this post.
Warning: this list is not for the faint of heart, as some topics are very sensitive.

The BBC notes that even some objectively ordinary things (e.g., dolls, clowns, mannequins) can have creepy connotations
According to Dr. Coltan Scrivner, a behavioral scientist and horror expert, the feeling of creepiness is something that almost anybody can resonate with. “If you say you’re creeped out, most people will know exactly what you mean.” It’s incredibly relatable.
Survivors From The 87th Floor Of The World Trade Center (North Tower) Wandering In The Dust After The Collapse Of The South Tower – New York City, September 11, 2001
That dust is still causing cancer. And I will never forgive, forget or pass an opportunity to remind folks that Republicans and Republicans only held up first responder healthcare funding. Firefighters died medically bankrupt because Republicans turned it into a political football for years. Years. If there is an objective good, you will find a christian conservative legislator in opposition. And while I should be used to it, this one still makes my blood boil.

The Nuclear Shadows Of Hiroshima
I'm from Hiroshima. I have seen this shadow in person and I have never cried more in my life. It's seriously haunting to see them in person.
Research shows that creepy things tend to be ambiguously threatening. A 2015 study into the psychological nature of creepiness found that it might arise in the gray area where things might or might not be dangerous.
Many people find things like mannequins, dolls, and clowns to be particularly creepy. They feel that these (objectively innocent) things have an underlying current of malevolence.

A Pod That Allows A User To Take Their Own Life. At The Push Of A Button, The Pod Would Fill With Nitrogen Gas, Rapidly Lowering Oxygen Levels
Yes, please, thank you. At least for those who have terminal illnesses.
We all have our pets humanely put down when they have no quality of life left. Why should it be wrong for humans to make those choices for themselves?
Load More Replies...This does not belong here and this is not terrifying. I call this humane and a human right. Terrifying would be showing someone terminally ill being forced to live out his remaining time in pain
Agree. I recently had a discussion about it with my 11F when she asked about Robin Williams' death.
Load More Replies...I have a degenerative neuromuscular disease. I have looked into the Sarco pod as well as places like Dignitas. I don't want to be trapped in a bed on a feeding tube, choking on my own saliva. If I live to that stage, it should be my choice. This picture isn't creepy, it's dignity.
Religion is the only thing stopping this from being widespread. This options should be available within a 50 mile radius to every human on earth. One should not have to travel thousands of miles to make a decision about their own body. People should be allowed to die with dignity, not suffer while they whither away.
This pod has not been used yet, even in countries where euthanasia is legal. There are still controversies about how painless it would really be and whether people would actually want to pass away in a capsule, separated from their loved ones.
I would be convinced that I would be choking to death as I died. Sounds cruel to me.
Load More Replies...We do. But I find the comparison problematic. I may make this decision for a cat but I would not want to make it for another human being. And I want to have the right to choose but I don't want anyone to decide for me.
Load More Replies...Idiots "think" legalized euthanasia is about "killing granny for the inheritance", as if people are being forced into it. People who apply are screened and scrutinized to prevent it. Nearly all who choose it do so because they know their lives will never get better, only gradually worse, and choose not to suffer.
Yes please. I think counselling before hand might be a good idea to check no one feels coerced, but this needs to be an available option. No one should have to live out their last months or years in pain, dependency and indignity. We would have mercy on an animal, we should have the same mercy for human beings.
For those against this type of Suicide: My Grandpa was a tough a*s WWII Veteran, that NEVER smoked a day in his life. He still managed to have COPD, Emphysema and battled Lung Cancer, because when he came home from the war he had a job in Construction that used Asbestos and Lead Paint. He committed suicide by using a shotgun in 1995, because he couldn't stand to live being so sick that he couldn't leave his and Grandma's house. FYI committing suicide via shotgun is probably one of the most f****d up ways to die. I've lost a total of 5 family members to suicide via gun and they were all Veterans of WWII, Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan wars.
Why don't they do this in the US where they still think it's OK to let the government decide to kill people, instead of those horrible botched chemical executions where people writhe in pain for way too long?
So much better to let people suffer for months or even years, right? We put down animals in pain, but not humans. Where the hell are our priorities?
Because maintaining life is extremely profitable. That tells you where our priorities are.
Load More Replies...If I get dementia and can no longer care for myself, I want this or an overdose of morphine.
Anyone who opposes assisted suicide is profoundly selfish & has no capacity for empathy.
But right-wing Bible thumpers somehow believe they assure their own entry into heaven by restricting the rights, choices and autonomy of others. Catholic Church, among others has figured out the longer you live the longer you pay into the franchise. It has nothing to do with morality.
Honestly, I don't even think this should be limited to those with incurable terminal illnesses. It's YOUR life. You should absolutely be in control of when it ends, period. Either you have the right to bodily autonomy or you don't. There's no in-between.
Why... does this exist? A wrong turn of depression... and suicide could be simple... even if they're not that deep in and only think about it for a second, one push of a button, and it's over...
First, it's meant for people with documented physical illnesses that will never, can never, get better. Second, you would have to be certified of sound mind before being given access. Oregon already has physician assisted euthanasia, and there are limitations and psychological checks in place. This, if it were ever available, would work the same way. Depressives and other people with mental illness would never be given approved access to such a machine. And if they broke into a hospital to use one, how is that any different from them deciding to bleed out in the bathtub or shoot themselves at home? It would still be an unpreventable violent suicide.
Load More Replies...Yeah, I get you, I don't know how would I feel being inside knowing "this is it" and in sucha a small place. I think I would ask for be asleep with anestesics first and then they can get me inside.
Load More Replies..."At least..." Better think it through, or at least some clinically depressed people will fight you as hard as they can. Already people in Canada and the Netherlands are being given a "choice" between too MUCH assistance for suicide and too LITTLE assistance for PAIN CONTROL!!!
Having the choice to choose your time when you have a terminal illness should be a legal right for every human. It doesn't stop that person choosing to fight their illness, but many would rather choose to go before they are no longer themselves. Watching many members of my family pass from cancer I've seen both types and the end is the same for both - its ugly, it's painful, it's degrading and it torture for people to keep them alive against their will.
Cannot find a source for this. Don't think it ever made it into existence
Does that mean you're slowly being suffocated? I'd hate to die like that, if that's how it works?
The human body cannot detect a lack of oxygen. The feeling of suffocating comes when we detect high levels of carbon dioxide. So long as carbon dioxide is being removed we do not feel suffocated, the body just drifts off.
Load More Replies...I consider Alzheimer's a terminal illness, having gone through watching 5 family members go through it & dealing with a different form of dementia with my husband. Refusing the right to die is evil.
You're basically suffocating yourself! As someone with lung issues I can tell you the feeling of not being able to breathe is not pleasant! That's not the way you want to go.
Didn't Michael Jackson have one of these things? Pity the nitrogen gas connector hadn't been properly attached.
Nope. This is not OK. Playing God with people's lives. They've made it way too easy to kill yourself. A very close friend of mine with mental issues wants to end it. I see her using this as a way of getting attention. She creates drama to bypass getting help with dealing with her issues of being abused. The system is willing to skip a valid mental evaluation and just let her kill herself. This is NOT right. The system is corrupt to the core.
this makes me think of a woman my age (late 30s) who i read about online. i don't remember what condition(s) she had but she was essentially quadriplegic and in horrible pain most of the time, having to have assistance to go to the bathroom and do much of anything else. she's a huge supporter for a solution like this, because existing as she does is absolutely miserable.
There are pain management d***s that ease suffering allowing God to take you.
So...you suffocate to death? Isn't there something gentler, that just lets you fall asleep?
this isn't like suffocating, it happens so fast the body doesn't have time to panic. it would be like a carbon monoxide or helium overdose, where you simply drift off because your body doesn't have enough oxygen to remain awake.
Load More Replies...Easy to build, if you're at all handy. Nitrogen from the welding supply store.
The only things stopping us from this humane and loving option are survivor guilt and religion.
Sadly that would not work for one of the most cruel, the worst and most horrifying, 100% deadly disease, like als.
Actually, it would. And if they're on a ventilator, connect the intake to the nitrogen tank.
Load More Replies...So is that what this lady is fixing to do, in the photo?
Finally. That's a good thing. But I have to admit that at first glance I was confused that Richard Simmons was in an Alien movie.
I believe this is still a concept / prototype. Completely doable and in my opinion a wonderful option under the right circumstances. But not yet legal or in current practice??
this is a horrible way to die...i have seen small mammals die this way...absolutely brutal...
She's a journalist posing in the capsule at a press event. She's not actually killing herself.
Load More Replies...People aren't paying to die. People die every day in a myriad of ways. People pay to not suffer.

Dr. Scrivener told BBC Bitesize that in real life, clowns paint on smiles, but on TV, dangerous clowns often paint on frowns. “This sends mixed ideas about whether they’re actually safe,” the scientist explained.
Meanwhile, clowns, dolls, and mannequins can scare some folks because of the uncanny valley phenomenon. In short, it’s related to how people feel uncomfortable when they see something that looks almost like a human being… but not quite.

It’s not just people, creatures, and things that can scare us. Landscapes, like lonely forest roads, can unsettle us as well. “Humans are social creatures so if you’re out by yourself and you see no one is there, it’s a great question to ask, ‘Why is nobody else here? Is there something wrong with this place? Is it dangerous?’” Dr. Scrivner said.
The Last Photo Before The Dyatlov Pass Incident
From Wiki: The Dyatlov Pass incident is an event in which nine Soviet hikers died in the northern Ural Mountains between February 1 and 2, 1959, under uncertain circumstances. The experienced trekking group from the Ural Polytechnical Institute, led by Igor Dyatlov, had established a camp on the eastern slopes of Kholat Syakhl in the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union. Overnight, something caused them to cut their way out of their tent and flee the campsite while inadequately dressed for the heavy snowfall and subzero temperatures.

Music, sounds, and silence can have a similar effect. However, context is vital here. “When a door creaks open that’s only creepy when you’re by yourself. It signals that something or someone may be pushing it slowly,” the scientist pointed out.
Alternatively, in a house full of people you know, a poorly-oiled door would be a minor annoyance at worst. Why? Because you feel safe and at ease.

Alison Parker, A Young Journalist, Met A Tragic End During A Live Television Broadcast In 2015
While conducting an interview, she and her cameraman, Adam Ward, became the targets of a former coworker, who shot them. The image shown here captures a moment from that last interview.
This happened just down the road from where I was living at the time. Virginia, USA. I was so glad to not have caught it because it's the news station that I'd most often watch if I did watch the news. Absolutely terrifying for the viewers who saw this happen live.

We just hear less about it because we directly benefit from it and don't want to give up that luxury.
