Not unique to the Americans. There are plenty of Brits who do the same. Even worse are the ex-pats who want to bring their home culture to their new country. *Sigh*

Migrants beinging their cultures to their new country is not only positive for them but for the entire population. Cultures grow sharing not bei isolated.

Not really what I meant. I agree 100% that mixing cultures is a positive. What I meant is the expats expecting/demanding that THEIR culture take precedence over the culture of the country they have moved to with ZERO accommodation for the preexisting culture. (e.g. waiters in Spain should be speaking English. Restaurants in Italy should serve bacon and eggs for breakfast. No I'm not eating any of that foreign muck, etc. etc.)

Whilst I did not expect to bat for this side, that's no different to saying that immigrants to Britain or US should leave their culture at the door. The ones you specifically refer to may have a lack of culture, but the concept of taking culture with you to new pastures is part of what makes the world vibrant.

I remember this American lady speaking to an Italian museum employee in English, and getting offended because the Italian - obviously struggling for words - called her son a baby instead of a child. He was clearly not a baby, but the employee was doing her best to be accommodating, and it really didn't change the meaning of what was basically "little human - lower price". I was so incredulous I still see it in my head 8 years later and make myself mad. Especially since my langauge doesn't have a specific word for baby, or toddler, or preteen... You're just a child, until you're a teenager, so I can see making this mistake easily.

Definitely. Most of my in laws are super xenophobic and wouldnt speak in english with me when i arrived to belgium. I learned flemish but it takes years to be fluent in a language. I used to sit there for hours in silence while they ignored me. But when they go to other countries (including mine, spain) they demand to be spoken in english or flemish

I had to have speech therapy when I was in grammar school. I would say my 'r's as w's and had a very bad lisp!! My speech therapist saved my life!!

They do!! I was made fun of so much that I just wanted to die. I didn't even know how bad that was to feel like that because I was so young. Kids can be so cruel!! My speech therapist was named Susan and she helped/saved me and I am forever grateful!! They are my heroes as I am sure they are with you and you children!!

I'm 58 years old and I still remember her name and her face!!
