In Switzerland ever two years the cars have a complete check over by the department of vehicles. If the car is not in tip top condition you're order within a short time schedule to have it fixed. If it's not done your license expires, also Cars that are repairable are sent to the dump yard. Regularly cars are checked by the police when driving on roads and before/after the exits of the highways. Regular controls are done for alcohol /drugs on the drivers. It's so much safer this way. Unfortunately more people ldon't respect the laws.

Sure in Europe as ever where on this planet there are loonies. Contrary to the states we have strict laws and regulations. Yes we enjoy FREEDOM as we aren't armed like in the usa. As a woman I can walk my dog at any time of the day or night. my neighborhood that's working class, low income residents and many on welfare. Our community is very mixed, many come as refuges from war zones. So yes we do enjoy freedom.

@Charlotte Stewart: sure there are stupid people in Europe. A lot. But we have laws to stop them doing stupid things like driving with overly worn out tires. Because their "freedom" to do stupid things is less important than everyone else's freedom to not to be hurt or damaged by said stupid things.

In most countries the mechanic would refuse to allowed the car drive further without changing tires. I would have taken the number/ license plate and called the police.

In the UK it Depends on what happens. if you are pulled by police you can have the car seized, £2500 fine and points on your license. If you cause an accident then prison time is almost a given!

It in and of itself is not an offense that would warrant prison. However, consequences that occur because of it (such as causing a fatal crash) could result in a felony with prison time.

I know in NH the state requires yearly car safety inspections. If you fail on anything you have to fix it before you can legally drive it, so most places won't let you drive away if you fail. The state I live in now doesn't do inspections but I'd imagine you'd get pulled over and ticketed if a cop saw you.

It depends on state laws too. In NY State it's the same as a parking ticket, or even just a warning! Of course the car wouldn't pass annual inspection but that's not an offense. Idiots!

In Denmark it’s a fine offense. Is it as bad as that the police will confiscate your car. Is it a new car you have to have it fully checked after 4 years. After that every 2 years. Does it not live up to standards and you get the ok stamp in the book the police can confiscate your car as well. The police can check the car register and see what the problems are with the car. They will confiscate if it’s a liability in the trafic not for a broken tail light though

I live in Ontario and never heard of this law, the Government should do a better job in communicating this to the public and to the garage/shop owners. Glad we have that law in place :)

My guess it's someone who is desperately poor, really needs transportation, and is too ignorant and stubborn to admit she's just too poor to own a car. I've known people like this. Sadly, what will happen is that the tire will blow one day, and if it's a front tire, the car will careen out of control and either hit another car, or a tree, or roll down an embankment and turn over Any of those, and she's screwed. So lack of foresight now will result in so much more anguish later. And yeah...if she cares that little about potentially killing someone, she probably doesn't wear a mask.

We in Europe have both country laws and European laws. Both have car maintenance status laws, the EU one being usually less extensive than the country specific one. This wouldn't pass either.

There’s no jail time for the shop letting this person go, they might get fined by the county or state, but not jailed.
