50 Times Car Mechanics Took Pics Of What They Were Dealing With So Others Would Believe Them
If you're counting everything down to the smallest screw, a single car has about 30,000 parts. That's way too many for us average folk to maintain. This means that over time, bad things happen, and we need to take our metal horsies to the mechanic to fix them.
But the state of some of our cars... Due to money shortage, ignorance, or neglect, we DIY or pretend we don't see a problem when it's clear that a professional has to take care of it. So when the inevitable occurs and we pull up to their place begging for help, the poor fellas know they're stuck with it for good.
There's even a subreddit for such situations. r/JustRolledIntoTheShop is a community that collects "those absolutely stupid things" that we bring, roll, or toss into their businesses and car mechanics are pretty popular there. Continue scrolling and you'll understand why.

Stayed A Little Longer At The Shop To Save This Little Guy From Someone’s Engine Bay
A recent study of 2,000 American car owners support the message this subreddit is sending, too. It found as many as a quarter feel they take a risk each time they hit the road as their vehicle is currently in need of repair or no longer runs well.
The study asked people to reflect on the current state of their vehicle and tested their knowledge of car basics. Results showed an alarming number of drivers are rolling the dice on vehicles in need of work — 68 percent said their cars currently have at least one thing wrong with them.
And with so many vehicles in need of love, Americans could stand to do a bit of brushing up on how to take care of their cars a little better. 36 percent of those studied confessed they don’t know the first thing about fixing a flat tire.
Customer: "Let Me Know When You Are About To Pull My Truck In So I Can Get My Raccoon" And He Sat In The Lobby With A Raccoon Until His Truck Was Done
The survey, conducted by Cooper Tires, discovered that nearly half of American car owners think they couldn't change their car’s oil and almost 30 percent believe they couldn't even pick out the correct oil their car needs in the first place.
One in four Americans also aren't confident they could jump-start their vehicle should they need to.
Even using an air pressure gauge to check tire pressure can prove to be too difficult for nearly one in five Americans.
I Dont Condone Stealing... But Man I Want To
“Although many Americans have a lack of confidence and knowledge when it comes to vehicle maintenance, it’s important to plan ahead and take initiative," Jessica Egerton, director of marketing for Cooper Tires, said. "Don't wait until there is an issue with a vehicle. It’s why Cooper Tires is passionate about helping educate and empower car owners across the country.”

Customer Refused All 4 Tires On A Rainy Day, She Also Had To Sign A Waiver Before Releasing The Car
this person is putting their own life, and that of innocent people in danger. In Europe, you could go to prison for driving like this.
This is what you get when the rhetoric demands "freedom" over "nanny state".
Load More Replies...My brother works at a tyre joint and he has refused to give peoples car back with dangerous tyres and threatens them with the police.
Ben Smith, in Australia it is spelt tyre.
Load More Replies...When your car tyres can double up as a mirror you know that’s not good.
I've seen bald tires and I've seen tires with the metal belt coming out, but I have never seen a tire go shiny like that. How did it get a shine?
In European countries, you have to have a certificate of the official yearly technical examination of your car. Does something like this exist in the US?
@Ludwig Michael Not that I'm aware of, however each state decides how long & how much registration & tags are: in my state it's every 2 year's & $300, I believe, oh & smog check which isn't too expensive!
Load More Replies...Sign the waiver AND call the cops... That person is a liability to people around them.
That has got to be one the scariest and craziest things I have ever seen 😐
Mirror surface on a tire? Wow, I guess they are really into hydroplaning.
I think it was irresponsible to release that car back to the customer... I would have refused. Definitely would not pas a UK MOT... I drive 35K+ miles per year and my tyres aren't anywhere near that worn!
To be fair, I've been in the situation of having to turn down new tires and driving very very slowly home on the back streets to park my car until I had the money to replace the tires. That being said, they weren't anywhere close to being that bad.
Wait, this is so shiny... is it a plastic around a tire or just a worn out tire? Serious question here
There’s metal reinforcement mesh beneath the rubber on tires. As the rubber wears down, it exposes the metal. You’ll start to see a metal strip toward the outer edge of the tire when this happens. Most tires don’t make it too far beyond that point. It’s extremely rare for this much metal to be visible. It’s flat like that because she’s been driving on it.
Load More Replies...In her defense, she might have had no choice. Tires, especially 4 at once, are freaking expensive, and she might have legitimately not had it, or had any way to get it. I've been there.
for tires to end up like that she would have had to be ignoring them for years.
Load More Replies...Do you know how long she would have to have driven to get the tyres to that point?
Load More Replies...What is wrong with people?? If it is because she didn’t have the money to replace the tires, she should be taking a bus..not driving !!
Yeah I'm pretty sure 'signing a waiver" wouldn't work in my country - and for good reason
That. Customer. Just. Killed. At. Least. 4. People. Plus. Herself. IDIOT!!!!!
Apparently here in California the service repair facilities are required by law to refuse to allow leaving if the vehicle is not in safe condition to drive...........I had a brief period of down on my luck and it was either tires or the mortgage payment.............guess who won!!
Waiver? She'd have been arrested for driving this murder weapon in the UK!! Car confiscated and likely crushed. Callous bitch for endangering other peoples lives 😡
Wow...wrong in so many ways!!! I would have been tempted to call the police - that is illegal in a lot (if not all) states. That is endangerment in so many ways.
She wanted it to feel like a pair of roller skates on the tar, not the smartest kid on the block.
One of the first things I experienced after learning Transcendental Meditation was, when I got into my car, I saw I had a tire like this on my car, and I thought, "Oh, I need a new tire." How can anyone be that stupid? I don't know but TM work up enough intelligence in me that I saw it, then, instead of procrastinating as was common for me at the time, I immediately drove to the store and bought a new tire. I figure that TM probably saved my life right out of the starting gate.
don't you people have laws for that? in Poland we get registration licence pulled if we even have different treads on same axis tires. Licence returned only if issues are fixed within like 7days
what the actual? No way this person should've been allowed to drive away. A quick call to the boys in blue/kahki would've sorted them out quick smart!
When i used to work at Firestone a woman came in with all 4 tires like this and worse. She said she had no money so we put 4 used tires on for her that were better and sent her off. sometimes you just have to do things like that.
There's no way they should be allowed to drive with tires like that.
I would have called the cops just 10 ft after they drove out, then show cops the release.
A very stupid innocent customers! They shouldn't get the right to drive!
these are those famous skating tires, work well on ice, not so great on asphalt.
Pretty sure this person probably needs their car to get to work and doesn’t have the money to get 4 new tires. People don’t normally risk their life driving around on bald tires for sh*TS and giggles. She may even have children to feed. Not everyone has money left over every month...she could barely be getting by. 😢
Im not 100% certain but if I remember correctly, in USA Michigan, I thought the mechanic or at least a tire shop could not allow a person to drive off like this. I know of at least 1 person where the tire shop put new "used" tires on a car for free because they had to. May have been company policy tho?
I mean, we're all guilty of running them a little bit past when they should be changed but seriously? Just change your tyres! It's not worth the risk.
I'd prefer the shop refuse to release the car and call the police to report a person for endangering the lives of all around her. Dumb bitch gonna kill someone.
The shop should have called the cops or the government vehicle inspectors like we have here in Canada.
i enjoyed the best yet awesome yooh youtube.com/channel/UCw_wTvj2R8-3LzC22szKM4Q
My husband is a mechanic and I don't care if the customer wanted to sign a waiver or not, they wouldn't let one of their customers walk out with bald tires where the metal cords are showing like that on a dry day let alone a rainy day... Tires like that can blow out and cause a really bad accident, but I will say this much, it looks like this specific picture is photoshopped. A bald tire even in the rain wouldn't be that shiny or smooth.... Tires wear unevenly over the surface of the tire because of the texture of the roads they drive on, so if they aren't driving on a flat, smooth surface like granite or marble, then this wouldn't happen...
Far out! My tyres weren’t even remotely near that bald & my mechanic wouldn’t let me leave without new ones. Tbh I would have called the cops on this driver as they’re putting everyone’s life at risk
You all have never been broke for a long period of time with no help from anyone have you?? Sometimes things like this, although the last thing the driver really wants to do and terrifying for them, is the only option until funds can be raised for repairs or replacements.
I would not have released this vehicle. Driving with slicks like this is illegal, waiver or not.
i did this once because the deamership didnt have payment plans. Signed waiver and went directly to tire store
Slip and slide a motor sport? Well, that’ll be interesting... the only good thing to come out of that is training EMT students and medical students get to learn on live people..
Dang, there is zero tread on that thang! As a 13 y/o it took me a sec to realize that
Calling BS on this. That is just freezing rain that added a coat of Ice to a tire (while parked) I can see the treads through the ice
Some people, have a death wish, with no regard for others, the attendant should have notified police !!!
Oh yes... the freedom to cause injury and death to others by your “ free”actions. Taking other peoples freedom from them.
Wauuw.. that is going to cause injury oreven death to somebody.
Pic is fake peeps. If you look at the correct angle you can se the tread under the filter or whatever they spread on the tire. Cant be balled and have tread at the same time.
Holy crap! That is the baldest tire I have ever seen! How did she even get into the shop safely?
Normally I'm not a "drop a dime on crime" kind of guy, I'm more live and let live. The operative word being live. "Hello, 911. You might want to swing by the Taco Bell on Main and Poplar St. I heard her say that's where she was going. If she isn't there, since it's raining just drive from there to Ralph's Garage. You're bound to find her and you might want to call a tow truck she's going to need one." REALLY HOW EFFING STUPID ARE PEOPLE? I DON'T WANT TO HEAR MAYBE THEY HAD TO MAKE A DECISION BETWEEN EATING OR BEING HOMELESS AND GETTING NEW TIRES. Believe me I'm the biggest "snowflake" and proud of wanting to take care of the most vulnerable in our society but those tires have reached another level of irresponsibility.
She should have been reported. Not only is she risking her life and that of her passengers,,,please god she DOESNT have children,, she’s also putting other road users at risk. Selfish selfish person
WOW REALLY BALLED TIRES I REALLY DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE EVER SEEN THAT BAD ! COME ON LADY GET IT TOGETHER !;=[[[
We would have towed her car to her residence at that point or we would have be responsible if there was an accident on the way home because we were the professionals and should have known better than to let her drive home that way. I was told even a waiver wouldn't hold up in court.
In Australia you would get pulled over and defected for bald tyres. I'm pretty sure the workshop would not be able to let it leave their lot except on a trailer.
Wow this is incredibly f****n reckless and stupid! That car is a death trap they will kill them selves or someone else!! Is that trumps car???
In Australia, the Mechanic is not allowed to release the car to the owner if it isn’t Roadworthy!
The last tire I saw like this was at the scene of an accident, I pulled over to help before the police were there. It was a fatal accident, the driver skid on wet pavement and hit a tree. Not a great memory.
That is one reason why you are allowed to deny giving her back that car in Germany. Actually, you as a shop owner would be in court if you release this car and it would (will) crash.
mechanic could alert the police who would stop her from operating a dangerous vehicle. no way they would pass inspection!
How does this even happen?! You can't just let her drive like that, change the tires..!
Its a paradox that though USA gave birth to motorism they still have the worst motorist :-|
So many snobs assume this only happens in the US. Apparently all other countries have 100% knowledge of how tire treads (sorry, tyre treads) work and all the money they need to get new ones whenever they need. Suck it please.

Some of these are pure stupidity but some I just feel bad for. Obviously no one thought them anything about cars and maybe some people don't have someone to teach them. I wish they had life skill classes in school. Cars, banking, how to write a check, credit, sewing, cooking etc. I had some of these when I went to school but they took them out a year or so after.
When I was in school, the driver's ed class taught us not just how to drive, but the parts of a car and how to maintain it. We also had home economics that did cooking and light sewing, etc. It was a well funded school. Not every family can teach these. Vote to fund schools and well rounded curriculum.
Load More Replies...If you ever need to be reminded about how dangerously dumb millions of people are (and you shouldn't, especially if you live in the US right now) just talk to doctors, mechanics, plumbers, etc. Anyone who fixes things for a living.
I never thought I'd hit worse than a pediatric ward full of kids destroyed by measles back in the 1990s. And then Covid hit... Turns out there's worse than kids in the USA of all places dying of measles. It's .... Yeah. Fixing? We're lucky if we don't break, too.
Load More Replies...My ex was the epitome of why mechanics get a bad rep. A very dear friend recommended my ex to his employee, who had a classic Chevy El Camino. It was an absolutely beautiful car in "Plum Crazy" purple. I WATCHED as he and his dipshit buddy backed it into the shop - and right into the end of the engine hoist. It put a huge dent in the tailgate. They went ahead & did the work requested (brakes & an LOF, I think). My friend brings the guy over to pick up the car and he freaks over the dent. My ex tries to tell him that it was there when the car showed up. My friend takes one look at my face & knows that I KNOW, he's lying. I've never been more humiliated in my life. Lost the ex, kept the friend.
And these folks are on the road driving next to you...
I dont understand the level of poverty in some of these pictures.. stealing some parts-driving without a tyre..just cant get my head around
in the 'old' days, my dad believed girls should be able to do basic maintenance/repair on their cars. fast forward 50 yrs and i am lost w/all the new crap as well the computers in cars. now, i call my great mechanic, curtis, and just tell him that my car is 'screaming' at me, telling me to have [blank] checkes and i would like him to shut it up
It is ridiculous on modern cars! To specialised to be able to fix anything. I'd never realised how much of a difference there was until my bf at the time bought a mach 3 escort. It stopped working once when we were driving, and I was thinking, like with any modern car, it was going to be a big expensive hassle. But he just broke open a pen, took out the spring, used it to hold whatever it was (something to do with the alternator?), we drove home and he fixed it properly when we were there. Old cars aren't safe re crashes etc but by God they were easier to maintain
Load More Replies...Back in 1971, a customer came in to get her car. She paid the bill, went outside and claimed that her car had been damaged in the parking. We went outside to see a crunched area where the damage was all the way down to bare metal. She claimed that the damage wasn't there when she brought the car in for service. We pointed out that the rust on the bare metal couldn't have possibly formed during the few hours her car was in our possession because it hadn't rained for many weeks. She disagreed. Yeah, right.
I ran an auto parts shop for a few years and during the busy season (mid-March through Thanksgiving) I would frequently have to deliver parts myself. I have actually patted fenders and apologized to cars for being owned and driven by total idiots.
Interesting. Some were just plain unbelievable.............can't believe some are so DUMB!
