Born into a world taken over by a global pandemic, these tiny newborns need protection of their own. A Thai hospital recently went viral for sharing photos of newborns wearing protective face shields “because safety is what we care about the most,” the representatives of the hospital said. Local Thai media reports that the visors that the newborn babies are outfitted with are part of efforts to give new mothers “peace of mind” at the hospital.

Babies born at a hospital in Thailand are fitted with special plastic face shields in order to protect them from the coronavirus and contamination. These tiny face masks are designed to stop any virus-carrying droplets from coughs or sneezes from reaching the tiny human’s face.

In a statement released on Facebook last week, the medics at the Praram 9 Hospital in Thailand’s capital of Bangkok said the masks were being used “because safety is what we care about the most.” Photos shared from the maternity ward show nurses wearing surgical masks while holding the newborn babies wrapped in blankets, fitted with tiny visors.

By doing so, the hospital staff hopes to give new mothers “peace of mind”

As BBC Thailand reports, the face shields aren’t to be worn all the time—it would be unhygienic. Instead, they are intended for instances when parents have no other options—for example, when transporting the babies from the hospital to their own home.

Even though it is reported that coronavirus is much more dangerous to those over 65, the virus can affect people of any age. Today, Thailand has 2,551 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 38 resulting deaths.

While this is a good idea, the concept of anyone but for the parents (and siblings probably) getting face to face with newborns needs to be challenged. Even without the pandemic they do not yet have fully functioning immune systems, and if not breastfed also no addtional protection. The behaviour of more or less close relativers and even strangers to close-in on babier or even touch them should not be tolerated. It always freaked me out that people felt like this was ok (like many think it is ok to touch a pregnants woman's belly without even asking).

That is a great mask to protect the kid's face. WHat's protecting him from *inhaling virus particles*?!?!

I don't think those are helpful. It's a nice thought. Maybe it is just to reassure the parents, like the article says.
