Taste is subjective, and if you still doubt it, just talk to people about whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza. Straight off the bat, you will hear contradictory answers and see just how eager folks are to defend them.
A few weeks ago, Reddit user 1060west-addison made a post on the platform, saying "What is the most controversial food opinion you have?" And it instantly blew up.
As of today, the post has over 20,000 comments, many of which have ignited heated discussions. From cupcakes to beets, continue scrolling to see what things are tearing everyone apart.

Only vaguely a food opinion, but, there’s no such thing as a “special occasion” food. Like, cakes are often associated with parties. But I’m a grown man and if I want cake because it’s Wednesday I’m gonna go get myself a Wednesday cake.
Breakfast is an "anytime" kind of food. It doesn't have to be restricted to 5 AM - 1030 AM. Sometimes I like bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and strawberry vanilla crepes at 8:47 PM.
Cupcakes with super thick and ornate frosting are fun to look at but rarely tasty
If they don’t have thick, genuine buttercream frosting, they are just sad muffins.
Just because you like hot food, doesn't mean you have to use the absolute hottest sauce you have.
I can handle hot, but prefer medium, where I can enjoy the heat but still actually taste my foods flavour.
I honestly don't think rice belongs inside a burrito. Get the carbs from the tortilla and any veggies. Rice is just a useless filler to make the burrito seems fuller than it really is. Also corn tortillas are superior for tacos.
Runny eggs are gross. Your favorite chef's "perfect scrambled eggs" look like vomit.
Sushi rolls shouldn’t be so big you have to take more than one bite or else they disintegrate
Just eat your sushi, rolls, maki or sashimi in an actual Japanese restaurant : taste before size. Leave the big fake ones to the western fast food chains
Sticking to the traditional authentic versions of foods is not necessarily better. It’s ok to be creative in cooking and mix things from different cuisines
Sometimes you have to modify them to suit the tastebuds of the people you’re serving them to. I don’t just mean people who weren’t raised on them, there are also people whose gastrointestinal system is somewhat delicate, and can’t take hot, spicy foods. Or wheat. Or dairy. Or…you get the picture.
Anything tastes good when you put sugar on it. People who think they like rhubarb are just kidding themselves. No one liked rhubarb. They like sugar.
Edit: rhubarb was capitalized and it doesn't deserve it.
Why are french fries not suitable for breakfast but tater tots are? I should be able to eat whatever I want for breakfast even if it’s not typically a breakfast food because it’s still mostly the same.
All food is food. Food doesn't have a schedule. Eat a curry for breakfast and cereal for dinner. The food doesn't care.
The cookie part of the Oreo is better than the stuffing part
Horseradish is amazing and belongs on more than just roast beef
Mayo on fries. Never realized how controversial it was until I moved to the States
YES. A good quality mayo is great on/with fries. *me checking freezer* :D
How about putting Ketchup and Mayo together on them? That's quite popular here in Germany
On that note, why is putting ketchup on fries, tater tots or potato wedges perfectly normal, but tell someone you put ketchup on a baked potato and they look at you like you're insane.
Texture of the baked potatoes being fluffy, vs the crunchy outside of fries.

HP is better on a bacon buttie for my taste. Mayo with chips is a complete winner, nothing controversial in the slightest. For controversy ask an Italian if they should put cheese (Parmesian) on fish, you will see sparks fly.
Load More Replies...Hey, in parts of Scotland where I’m originally from we put curry sauce on fries 🍟 .
Pretty much a staple in the whole of the UK - I've lived in three of four countries and have visited the other one a few times, and it can be found pretty much everywhere. Though tbh, I prefer what the Midlanders call ''Curry Sauce'' on my chips to what it generally means here in Manchester, where I currently live.
Load More Replies...Dutchie here! Fries with mayo are so good but put in some satesauce (pindasaus) with it and you have the best dip ever! According to me though :)
Well, think I already replied this before... some people have the nerve to actually call Hellman's mayo. Absolutely no taste ! Belgian mayo is the ticket. Higher on acidity, and consistency as if it came out of a concrete mixer. By the way, don't get me started on the Dutch with their sweet 'frietsaus' (fries-sauce) ;-)
The Dutch have frietsaus (yuk) but also a great mayo. Brand is Zaanse Mayonaise and it is so delicious.
Load More Replies...I actually like mayo and gravy on my chips... (English gravy... I'm not sure what American gravy tastes like)
It's totally common thing here in Slovakia to have fries with mayo/tartar sauce OR with ketchup. But well, every country has its specific meals or combinations that looks weird to others
My brother invented a sauce for us: Tartar sauce with ketchup for any sort of fish, scallops, etc.
Load More Replies...In this country, we grate white cheese on fries. Ketchup and mayo are considered exotic and unusual additions.
yeah, thats a little weird. but if you mix it up with ketchup or something, its fair game.
sounds like you need deliverance at church sunday nite... get into the healing line then...
Meh, I have to disagree. I don't like mayo enough to eat it with fries but like mayo mixed with ketchup (fry sauce) yum yum
Knowing what "fry sauce" is means you are from/in a very particular part of the US
Load More Replies...Best fries I had ever had was in Belgium. We were in Brussels and we were walking around and a friend said "let's get some fries". Walked up to a restaurant that had a open Dutch door and ordered a cone of fries. Ohmygawd, they were so good and they came with ketchup mixed with mayo. Ever since, that has been my go to dressing for double friend fries.
Which is weird, because the US came up with "Mcdonalds fries dipped in milkshake" as a concept.
I’m from the Netherlands and mayo is the traditional topping for French fries. Dutch mayo is the best and if you’re lucky to live near a Dutch store or deli pick up a squeeze bottle of the good stuff. I love mayo on a lot more than just fries.
try it with real HOME MADE mayo ! superb ! fries and vinegar in northern France and Britain ! good too !
First tasted this when I was a kid (50's) and my first holiday 'abroad'. Seafront at Ostend (Belgium) and they served maccyD type tiny fries with mayo. Even parents had never had it before - mind blown!
Since visiting the Netherlands in the 70s have mayo on my fries all the time.
Ooh, yes! A good mayo does wonders for fish and chips (fries), too.
Aioli on fries is NZ standard now, not as tangy as mayo or Tom sauce tho
I love mayo on fries. Especially if it's mayo and ketchup together. (I'm from the US, by the way)
Mayo and ketchup are a common mix across large parts of the world fortunately.
Load More Replies...Which type? A few are simple 'yellow mustards'. American (mild), English (hot and pungent - so much for those critics banging on about British and 'bland'), Dijon (tad vinegary for me) with honey, wholegrain...
Load More Replies...Fry sauce is huge in the US tho. It's just mayo, ketchup and maybe Worcestershire/mustard/garlic powder/bbq sauce/whatever else is lying around. But mostly mayo.
Which is actually Marie Rose Sauce (if you add the extra ingredients listed) and popularised in the 1960s (by the British chef F***y Craddock) or even Cocktail Sauce which predates the Marie Rose sauce. Not quite the same as Thousand Island, that has a different spin. There is also the Argentinian Salsa Golf, which is earlier than all I believe (about 100 years ago). Interestingly, many countries have been mixing these things together for decades.
Load More Replies...Mayo does not go with fries, mayo goes with eggs. Either ketchup or malt vinegar go with fries. Egg yolk isn't bad either.
It's all very subjective, isn't it? I can't agree with you about mayo on eggs. Eggs go with Hollandaise sauce and are the making of the dishes Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale or Florentine (bacon, salmon or spinach variants of the same dish). Mayo, for me, is not enough of a flavour on it's own to work with an egg, another mild flavour. It needs the contrast. Ketchup is quite an overpowering flavour in comparison and doesn't actually enhance like a condiment should. That said, people do love the flavour of ketchup! So that's what they're enjoying and the chip is a carrier in that instance. Fair enough. I think that is why the blend of mayo and ketchup works, it tones down the ketchup. Salt and malt vinegar still allows the flavour of the fried potato to come through so that's why that's my preference. Dipping a chip in egg yolk, oh yes yum!
Load More Replies...Had to look that one up - not heard it called fancy sauce before. Rather a lot of names for the same type of thing a mayo and ketchup mix!

Try fry sauce. It's a Utah thing that is a base of ketchup and mayo (1:2). But real fry sauce has a little something extra. It is tasty.
May be something they do in Utah but a base of ketchup and mayo is common in many countries, some dating back a century. Which at least means it's a popular flavour combo. Just has a lot of different names. In the UK it's Marie Rose sauce - but has a couple of extra ingredients to give it some punch.
Load More Replies...Hell, I discovered this as a child back in the sixties. Long before it became a thing—-or a manufactured controversy—-here in the States. Sure, some people thought it was weird, but I liked it so I didn’t give a s**t what they thought.
Ketchup is bland and boring. Mayo is much better - if you can, get some Dutch joppie- or fritessaus - but when I make fries I usually spice them with more than half a dozen herbs and spices and they don't need anything to go along anymore at all. Sometimes I go with some latin salsa (whatever they sell as salsa here) or with a self made "Mexican" salsa verde (I have to use replacements, because you don't get tomatillos here but my Mexican lady rated it as tasting just like home :D).
KETCHUP is bland? It's got a really strong flavour. What's the matter with your taste buds? Or the brand of ketchup you've had. You may not like it but there is no way by any definition of the word that bland can apply to ketchup.
Load More Replies...Mayo or mustard are good on fries, but I really prefer cheese. That red stuff is eww!
Cream cheese in sushi is f*****g gross
WHO EVEN DOES THIS GIVE ME THEIR ADDRESS AND I WILL PERSONALLY HIRE MY CAT TO ASSASSINATE THEM (free advertising moment- she works 200 buckaroonies an hour and always gets the job done)
Roasted marshmallows are only worth eating if they have been fully caught on fire first. Burnt sh’mellows hit different.
Circus Peanuts and Candy Corn are NOT food and are completely repulsive!......
Truffles are overrated. They are used on everything as a buzz word and generally don’t even need to be there to begin with.
They are usually added so sparingly, that I'm still not sure I know what a truffle tastes like. I would quite like to eat a whole one, just to find out.
Bananas do NOT go in fruit salad!
The texture does not match the rest of the fruit, and the mush ruins it
Wrong, bananas are a MUST on fruit salad, their texture os no different than grapes or kiwi, and the flavor they give its amazing.
Unless it is a very good steak, burgers are better.
too much cheese on/in food stops being enjoyable
Bacon is fine, but is vastly over appreciated. It’s salted meat. Chill out everyone.
Most British food is awful, like terrible, yet nobody will admit it.
EDIT: A lot of people seem to think I’m not British. I am. Whenever I eat out, it’s foreign food for this guy. Keep your Sunday dinners to yourself.
Not sure what kind of British food you are talking about, but I pity you
Canned fish is awesome! Not just sardines and anchovies but you can get all kinds of fish in cans, even stuff like clams and even squid! And if you prefer food without too many additives or processing, look at the back of the can, it typically says something like "ingredients: fish, salt, some sort of oil (veg or sunflower or something) and with some, the processing is so minimal the fish is just cooked in the can after sealing during the pasturization process.
Try kipper snacks, they kinda have a smokey bacon taste. Fantastic treat/snack
