Flight Attendants Kick Out Passenger Who Barely Fits In Their Seat Due To Obese Seatmate

When boarding a plane to travel, we can only hope that the flight is safe, smooth, comfortable and without drama. But time and again, there are stories making headlines about sagas in the sky. One of the issues that crops up is how airlines, and fellow flyers, are or aren’t accommodating plus-size passengers.

One person shared how they requested to swap seats with an “extremely obese” neighbor passenger, to prevent being squashed against the window. What should have been a courteous exchange of words, and possibly seats, turned into a full-blown dramatic embarrassment for both flyers and ended with one of them being asked to leave the plane. The passenger turned to the internet after their formal complaint to the airline fell on deaf ears.

American Airlines requires passengers to book two seats if they need extra space to “travel comfortably and safely”

Image credits: Forsaken Films/Unsplash (not the actual photo)

American Airlines (AA) states on its website that the airline will “do [their] best to find the most comfortable and usable seats for your needs.” But passengers requiring “extra space” during travel need to inform the airline when booking their flight.

“If you need more than one seat to travel comfortably and safely, you must book an additional seat by calling Reservations,” reads the AA site. It further explains that the airline “will make sure you get 2 adjacent seats at the same fare” and adds that a passenger might be offered a seat in a higher class of service with more space. In that case, they’ll have to pay the difference in fare.

In the event a passenger didn’t book an extra seat in advance, AA advises that they ask an airport agent to check if 2 adjacent seats are available. “If we can’t accommodate your needs on your original flight, you can buy seats on a different flight at the same price as your original seats,” states the website.

AA is not the only airline with this policy. United Airlines (UA) gives a bit more detail on their site, stating that they “require that all passengers fit comfortably in their seat on the plane.” UA notes that passengers might have to make additional arrangements “if you can’t buckle your seatbelt, even when using a seatbelt extender, the seat armrests don’t stay down when you’re in your seat, [or] you’re in the space of the seat next to you when seated.”

United advises passengers to either book an extra seat in economy class at the same price or to upgrade to a premium cabin where the seats are wider. The airline adds that if an extra seat isn’t available, passengers will need to change their flight to one that has extra seats. But they offer compensation in the event you’re inconvenienced. “If you’re not in your home city, state, or country, and your new flight requires you to stay overnight we can give you meal and hotel vouchers as well,” reads the policy.

Some believe airlines are discriminating against plus-size passengers

Not all airlines have the same policy when it comes to passengers “fitting comfortably and safely” in their seats. Some charge extra, some don’t. And there are those who have no policy on the plus-size matter at all. In 2023, close to 40,000 people signed a petition asking the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to “protect plus-size passengers” and implement a standard policy that “prioritizes the comfort and well-being of all passengers.”

Plus-size travel influencer Jae’lynn Chaney was behind the campaign. Chaney has been using a seatbelt extender since she was a child. “I kind of knew that planes were not built for people like me by the time I was 12,” she told CNN, adding that she’d sometimes try to “tuck her seatbelt underneath her stomach” so that flight attendants didn’t know it wasn’t buckled.

Chaney called on airlines to “provide accessible additional seats to customers-of-size” or those who may “encroach onto another passenger’s space.” The influencer says some airline policies are “discriminatory” because passengers like her are “paying twice for the same experience.”

She believes plus-size passengers should not be charged extra. “These passengers should be provided with an extra free seat, or even multiple seats, to accommodate their needs and ensure their comfort and safety, as well as those around them, during the flight,” reads her petition.

The same year, CNN reported that “while the average width of an airplane seat has been shrinking for decades, bodies are getting larger around the world, with experts predicting that over half of the global population will be overweight or obese by 2035.”

Exactly! The woman was refusing to make room for another passenger to get to their seat. She should have been ejected at that point. As for the picture. Taking pictures of people in public places is generally allowed. She has no grounds to complain, especially if he was attempting to take a picture of his seat and she was in it.

People who can't fit between two armrests should be forced to pay for the seats they occupy (even if it is just a portion of that space). They should also have a maximum total weight: i.e. passenger plus luggage. If you're 50kg, then you can bring 100kg of luggage (if you can haul it). If you're 150kg (just to throw some random numbers out there), you're all out; no luggage for you!

I exclusively fly on an airline which allows me to purchase 2 seats and refunds the second seat after my flight is completed. I have Lyme disease and the accompanying arthritis, so I need to extend my legs and sit on the port side of the plane so that I can walk with my cane after arrival at my destination. I have never taken anyone else's space and keep my legs directly in front of my second seat. I have had filthy looks from boarding passengers, and complaints, but, I have my placard from the airline which the FAs completely understand is valid and move those people to vacant seats. I wish that all airlines were this accommodating to disabled people or people who may physically require the extra space to be safe and comfortable.

Wasn't it a thing that if you were over a certain weight or couldn't fit into one seat you should purchase 2 tickets. Which 1. Had to do with the comfort of the other passengers as what OP describes sounds horrible to deal with, and honestly just a big no for me. 2.It actually screwed with the weight of the plane as it wasn't designed for each passenger to weight more than 90-ish kg.

For reasons of safety and convenience, airlines require passengers' cabin baggage to be properly stowed away. The same rule should apply to passengers' butts.

I am a large person myself, the middle seat should have moved. She didn't just wake up that morning with surprise onset fatness. She knew she was too big to be playing peekaboo with gravity on a plane well in advance, the least she could do is avoid being some body horror jungle gym of flesh and get up for the other person.

I've had a similar experience, however I was in the middle seat and a big fella had me squished. I'm tall and is 200lbs, as I work out daily (stress-reduction therapy + body building). I was very uncomfortable during the trip, I didn't really say anything as I'm non-confrontational. The lady next to me (window seat)was aware of my discomfort though. I played it off as "I need more leg room" or something not-related. Airlines need to fix these issues so all patrons are comfortable. It shouldn't be a tug-a-war game with space. This is also the reasons why I chosen to travel to train more. It's 300% more relaxing and their seats are actually accommodating for various physiques.

Part of what I like about flying Southwest is I have a chance to choose my seat based on who is already sitting in the adjacent seat(s). If it looks like I'll be squeezed in, I can keep walking further back. Of course, if I sit next to an empty seat it's up in the air who will sit next to me. I'm sad they're changing their seating policy to be like all the other airlines. They're losing part of what makes them special ☹️

Ya... that's not how it works. If the flight crew orders you off the plane you have two choices. Grab your carry on and exit, or wait around until you are escorted off in cuffs, criminally charged, and permanently banned from commercial flights around the world. You get an A+ for confidence, though.

speaking as someone who was formerly overweight/obese. If you're that fat, you need to recognise that you're as fat as you are and pay for two seats. If you don't want to do that, either don't travel, or lose some weight. People should not have to miss flights because of your poor life choices.

I would have asked the flight attendant to show me how to squeeze by by doing it herself. Then I would have asked for the purser and requested either the other person's removal since she failed to abide by airline rules (specifically the fitting into her seat) or a seat swap since if there was an emergency i couldn't get past her.

It's not "discrimination" to make an obese person buy 2 seats. If you're too large to fit between the armrests, you need to pay for that extra space. But, the airlines need to go back to the old "normal" seat sizes of the past.

They make device to measure your carryon to be sure it will fit... maybe they need to do the same for people. Or have some kind of dividers you can slide next to you on the seat so that you aren't actually touching the other person.

I am a small person and fit in a plane seat with ease (5’4”, 120) and when you’re in coach, they’re STILL not comfortable seats. Anyone who is a bit tall or wide (overweight or just athletic) is uncomfortable. Plane seats are simply too small. However, if you are of a size where you are encroaching on another passenger’s space, you should purchase a second seat - for safety, and for the comfort of yourself and those around you. It’s fair: you pay for what you use. If we both buy a glass of wine, you don’t get a larger serving than I do because you’re a larger person.

They absolutely kicked off the wrong person. If you've allowed yourself to expand so large that you cannot fit into a standard seat....than you have to buy two! Or you have to shell out for first class. You're not entitled to encroach on the space that others paid for.

Like so many of these one-sided stories the details ask more questions than they answer. Is there any standard aeroplane seat row that you could even think about "squeezing past" someone, even a small person let alone the one described here, to access the window seat? Immediately rings an alarm bell that this is not a completely accurate account of what happened, then a pinch of salt needs to be added to the rest of it accordingly.

100% accurate or not it sounds like the lady should have bought 2 tickets if she can't fit on her one seat. Either way a passenger shouldn't have to spend an entire flight being touched by a stranger, even if it's not on purpose.

Little factoid about why all the problems on airplanes. The air. Air on planes has only 50% of the oxygen that exists regularly. Then did this for a legit reason...lower oxygen content makes surviving airplane crashes easier, because the regular concentration of oxygen fuels greater explosions...causing more to die. However, there are, I am sure, other ways to deal with the oxygen problem. And...guess what? Yes, the lower amounts of oxygen fuel people's emotional difficulties. So, yes, many of the people who flip out on planes are doing so, because their bodies can't process the lower oxygen levels. Who knew? And more importantly who cares and who will force the airlines to do it another way???

Can't the woman in the middle seat be required by the FA to lower the armrest between her and the window seat?

For reasons of safety and convenience, airlines require passengers' cabin baggage to be properly stowed away. The same rule should apply to passengers' butts.

I’ve had this happen! I had bruises from being sat on and smelled like the gentleman’s sweat when I finally got off the plane. I couldn’t even hold a book over my lap because he was sitting on me. It was awful! For the record, I was a 110# 5 foot female. He needed his seat and much of mine.

I am a large person myself, the middle seat should have moved. She didn't just wake up that morning with surprise onset fatness. She knew she was too big to be playing peekaboo with gravity on a plane well in advance, the least she could do is avoid being some body horror jungle gym of flesh and get up for the other person.

Some people are in denial of their issues. That's why the first step is admitting you have a problem.

That should have been handled better but guessing FA had already dealt with enough and did not want to be called out for fat shaming.

Why have you allowed them to kick you out ?! You paid for your journey. They have to deliver. Other peoples' obesity is none of my, nor is it yours - we don't judge, but we won't take anybody's shid either. If I pay for a journey, I absolutely will arrive there. Nothing to discuss.

Ya... that's not how it works.

Why is this true, the passenger did nothing wrong, he was denied his seat.

Ha ha! Totally wrong person got kicked off the plane. However, I would have climbed over the obese one and brushed my a*s on her face and then sat on the part of her that was on my side. Then again, I am not a doormat. I have done that on train. Some word exchange followed but so what.

He is not in the wrong but it feels likes the poster is omitting some key info here. I doubt he was as calm about the situation as he makes out, which was the reason he was removed from the plane.
