The impression that the eyes of a person in a painting are following you, is a common optical illusion, due to the two dimensional nature of the artwork. You can see the illusion in every portrait where the subject looks at the viewer. That's why everytime I see the claim: "Oooooh, that portrait is spooky, haunted, cursed because the eyes follow the viewer" I nod and think: Yeah, the magic of perspective and optical illusions.

And the food looks either like something where you need a manual to find out, what is edible and what is just decoration, or it looks like something you may find on a beach walk, on a depressing beach, in Mid-November. And better they build a Fast Food joint or a food truck next to that fancy a*s restaurant, because it does not look like the food is supposed to fill you. I kind of had the urge to wrap myself in a blanket and get a hot chocolate. Because this whole design looks as appealing and warm like a jump into the Atlantic Ocean; in Mid-November.

Yes, the homework banned thing in Finland was new to me too. The last thing I heard was that there shouldn't be grades anymore. And I am sometimes irritated too that Finland is always the land of milk and honey when it comes to education. No, it isn't there are problems and frustrations too. Like in every nation. But at least in my youth I would have loved to rather go to an art orientated school in Finland. Well, I suffered through the German school system. And I sort of can relate to the daughter. There was a documentary here on television about "Prison-orphans", children of convicted criminals in China. The cases in the documentary were mostly of people on death row who had children. But in the base it was, that the whole family is basically tainted and guilty when one of them commits a crime. Yes, the children too. That's why they are shunned in society or even abandoned by the families. This happens especially in villages or more rural areas of China. The documentary was about an orphanage for such abandoned children, that was run by a former prison guard. She became concerned about the wellbeing of the children of the inmates and started this orphanage. I think this way of thinking steems from the idea, that the family is viewed as a whole entitiy, and not as a group of individuals. And if one of the family does a bad thing, it is sort of ingrained in the whole family. This is of course not true, but it is part of the thinking.

Some of the most creative and accomplished peoples in the history of mankind suffered from episodes of extreme depressioni. It was peaceful, everything was in order, after the economic and inner struggles after WWI and the collapse of the German empire, it was great. You had a job, no more civil war like scenes in the cities. You could live a rather comfortable life.... Well, as long as you weren't a jew, a communist, in the opposition or anyhow else opposed to the regime. And at the start of the regime North Korea was even ahead of South Korea when it came to economy and how comfortable the people lived. This changed especially after the downfall of the Soviet Union in the 90s, when North Korea was left with China as an allie. And to my knowledge this allieship has cooled down over the years. But yeah, the horrors of an oppressive dictatorship often show in between the lines, and rather subtle. These were also the experiences my father made during business travels in the German Democratic Republic.

Yes, a lion is a wild animal, even if it grew up with people. And that's why photos like this send out the wrong message. And you have to think, where are all the cubs going, when they grow too large and too old for this type of photos? And no, they are certainly not attack animals all the time, but they are apex predators, with an amazing strength and bite force. And their prey instinct is still there. So, they may not mean harm, when they lash out at you, but their strength can cause great harm, or even kill you.

It's still not okay. You can't re-relase a lion into the wild, when it was handreared. And lion and tiger cubs are sadly widly exploited just for this type of photos. Genuine sanctuaries do not encourage this kind of interaction between cubs and tourists, as it sends the completly wrong message out there. Also, a lot of lion cubs who are used as photo probs in South Africa, end up as trophies in canned huntings. I don't know where this photo was taken, but on this background you shouldn't take photos with lion cubs. It simply sends out the completly wrong message, as people tend to want to do the same, which in turn feeds a pretty nasty business model.

I can't believe Bored Panda would agree to publish these pictures with this text. For the record, Nazi Germany also had pretty stunning monuments and food and beautiful landscapes; it was still a country that actively sought Jewish people and organised their mass-murder. Nobody cares about whether North Korea looks "nice" or if the food is amazing or if they have lovely blue rivers. It doesn't make it "not as bad as we believe". It's still a place where people have no rights, where there is no freedom of speech, where people are interned for having different political views, where tourists have to be followed by a guide everywhere they go, where rape is used as a weapon against female prisoners, where forced abortions are practiced, where there is forced labor (just like in Nazi work camps), where people cannot choose their religion. I struggle to see how it is "not that bad" and how it could be worse. But yay! You can picnic by the river and they even have a beer festival!
