@Pilot Dave, As a liberal, I have no issue with military-style weapons being wielded in a military-style situation! I wish "conservatives" (I use the term loosely) would be able to see that there is a big difference between suburban petty-crime and a war zone.

I know in Hawaii you used to be able to buy ash trays and other trinkets made from lava that was retrieved from a flowing stream by some brave soul with a steel pole.

Sadly tourism in DRC is not really quite up to the level of selling that many trinkets to tourists just yet. I hunted desperately for a fridge magnet but was unable to find one; I ended up buying a small carving and making one myself!

Actually no! When I climbed Volcan Villarrica in Chile, many years ago, we were supplied with gas masks, but not on Nyiragongo. I'm not a vulcanogist so I don't know why! I'm guessing a combination of it not being gassy enough and the crater rim being about 600 m from the actual lava lake? But yes, we could definitely feel the heat! I know what you mean! Though I'm pretty sure you can't get close enough to do that! It was just incredible from a distance too though, even though I was sitting over half a km away from it!
