May you be spared the wrath of the prescriptive v. descriptive diehard linguists! (And is it really such a stretch to combine these two Latin roots -- somnos = sleep + graphia = writing -- into somnography = sleep writing? Especially when "somnography" is not exactly an everyday word with a universally known/agreed upon meaning...) Whatever they're called and whatever lore behind them, I hope the images brought something positive to your day; maybe even the stories, too. (And, again, for the anti-AI diehards: no AI was used to make these images!)

"Somnography" is my own usage of the word. The Science article and the New Yorker piece here (https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/12/06/the-science-of-mind-reading) are what inspired this art. My neuroscientist friend really is named Beata; I've changed her last name for privacy (and because she loves volleyball). This is an art project trying to emulate the style of the images that almost -- and likely someday very soon -- will be captured from dreams. No AI was used, just Photoshop, Corel Painter, and a Wacom tablet (and many, many hours).

The story behind these images is a mix of fact and fiction. What I'm calling "somnography" has advanced to the point where we can *nearly* photograph dreams -- check out the videos in the Science article linked in the post. But these images are all digital paintings inspired by the current state of the neuroscience around "seeing" dreams. No AI was used to create them -- just Photoshop (without any of its AI modules), Corel Painter, and a Wacom tablet.
