30 Of The Most Useful ‘Poor People’ Life Hacks, As Shared In This Online Thread

Some of these: yes. Some others are too much. Why am I even working and making money if I can’t enjoy my life a little while I’m still healthy/young enough to do so. For me it’s a question of time and what’s valuable to me. I will splurge on travel and hobbies, but I rarely eat out (also for health reasons). Yes, I can take the cheaper route, but if it’s going to cost me too much time then it’s not worth it. It’s the different between buying the cheapest flight and saving yourself 2 hours for the slightly more expensive option. I grew up poor and now make a comfortable salary - comfortable enough to treat myself and still save. Just don’t waste money on things that don’t actually add value / bring joy to your life and you’ll be fine (assuming you’re not on a super tight budget).

I agree this doesn’t add up. Who in their right mind would push for full custody of children to take them away from a capable mother... If anything I would expect him to not want any custody rather than the reverse now that he’s finally able to explore his sexuality fully. What’s more, courts tend to side with the mother, so it’s weird there’s even a possibility she would lose custody unless there’s a real reason she SHOULD lose custody. She alludes to mental health problems and I image that’s the real story. The husband doesn’t believe the kids are safe in her care when he’s not around and so he’s trying to take them. She turned to Reddit for sympathy and gave half a story.

I was watching a show (interviews in the library) and the male host was saying that - as a man - everything he did could be boiled down to wanting to be more attractive to women. Now, of course he can’t speak for all men everywhere, but it gave me a lot of perspective and understanding on this tendency to think that what women do revolves around what men want. In essence it’s because they themselves are basically obsessed with us and can’t understand that the obsession isn’t mutual ;).

I told the husband of one of my dearest friends that his wife was sneaking out at night to go to bars alone to drink, and that two other of our "friends" were covering for her. I then wrote her a letter saying how much I loved her and worried about her, but understood if she never spoke to me again. She called me the night before she left for rehab, still hurt and angry but acknowledging that her mother had pointed out how much I must care to put myself in that position. When she got back from rehab, she was a new person and thanked me for saving her life. Unfortunately the damage was done to her marriage, but she eventually met another man and led her best, sober life. Several years later, COVID took her, but I swear I feel her with me every day.

The comment is funny, but the whole approach of judging the aunt for living her life how she saw fit is disgusting. If you don't care about your sister getting married, then fell free to tell her so, but not blame it on her "moving too fast" for your own comfort. She got married several times and had intense love life, so what? What's it to you?

I've got Asperger's and no problem with pets. Sure, people with mental specialities have their own knacks, but the world doesn't revolve around them. Sure, the baby cat suddenly being there could be a bit overwhelming, but in a scenario like that, it's suck it up and adapt, because the job world won't give you the luxury of being this dramatic about new things either. A kitten is a very small and forgiving thing in comparison.

I agree with Zedrapazia - the behaviour of the mom feels like she’s setting her son up to fail in the real world. You can’t protect your kids from everything and a cat is minimally disruptive (im a cat owner - they essentially take care of themselves). Of course the more effort you put into bonding with the cat, the more affectionate it will be…. But it sounds like this family doesn’t want that soooo let the cat do its thing and make sure you meet its basic needs, take it to the vet, etc. and it’ll be fine. What a bizarre reaction and family dynamic… everyone comes off anxious and miserable. The mom is especially has zero chill and sounds like a difficult person to be married to - I feel for the husband and the kids.

Also agree with this. The fact that his first instinct is to dump his daughter speaks volumes and makes me think she would be better off without him in her life in the long run. He doesn’t seem like someone that would treat her well after this revelation (who knows how he treated her before). No father is probably better than a s**t father. Everyone is the AH in this one - the father, mother and friend.

I think this is a really good and nuanced response. Of course, the right answer is to not pass any blame onto the child and to continue to be her father… but as you said realistically not everyone is capable of that. If this guy is going to let his resentment affect the way he treats his daughter then leaving might be in her best interest. Still a s****y thing to do, but it’s better than staying and treating her like c**p because of something her mother did. Ideally he would get therapy to see if he can overcome this for his daughter’s sake before throwing in the towel.

I only used tinder for a month. When I first started I would swipe on anyone I would be interested in getting to know better - because how can you decide anything based on a picture. The problem as a women is that every swipe resulted in a match and I ended up with an ocean of half-assed messages. Couldn’t handle it so pretty much ghosted everyone. Then I tried swiping only on the 10/10s, but those guys also get too many options and are kind of the worst (taste of my own medicine?). Finally, I deleted the app and ran off into the sunset with myself.

This happened to me too. Ex wanted to settle and I wanted to roam. The sad part was that he refused to see how incompatible we were with our life goals. The breakup was very one sided (my side). No matter how much I tried to explain the situation to him he wouldn’t see it - maybe he loved me too much. A few months after the breakup I quit my job to travel full time for a year and am now settling (for now) in a new country. He’s still very much not over the breakup. I hope he comes to see it as a good thing over time and finds someone who’s more compatible. I still struggle to understand how shocked he was by the whole thing.

Ya it seems like a weird thing to be annoyed about that could easily be fixed by relabeling it in your head. My family paid and went on my honeymoon with me and I didn’t mind. You can find opportunities to spend time with your spouse only while there, not to mention the rest of the marriage where you can also spend time alone.

Even easier option - email (at least gmail) does not recognize periods. So if you have a name like firstname.lastname it’s the same as f.irstnamelastname (try it out by sending yourself an email). I have yet to encounter a company whose subscription system did not interpret these as different emails. Just move the period around for as many free subscriptions as you want.

If you take an inspiration picture of a person who’s hair texture is completely different than your own or who has a look that’s only achievable through a lot of styling then there’s no way you’re going to get that result on the daily. A good stylist would tell you as much though I suppose.

But it depends on what’s important to you. One of the biggest reasons I left my ex was because he left all the planning and romance to me. Turns out there *was* a study that showed the brain is flooded with CSF during deep (non-REM) sleep, and while the researchers who discovered this think that it *might* have a flushing or cleaning effect, there still needs to be a lot more study/research to determine that for certain. I read this article a while ago that really clarified my feelings on this. Studies show that people who are married are, on average, slightly happier than people who are not married. Which has been known for a long time, so people have sort of internalized the idea that marriage equals happiness. But when you break down the numbers in that, what it actually looks like is that people in happy marriages are much happier than everyone else and people in unhappy marriages are much less happy than everyone else. So being in a good relationship is the best situation. But being single is the second-best, and far better than being in a bad relationship. So to me, it’s like not the very best, but it is the second-best and that’s pretty good. It’s like you don’t have a Jaguar but you have a Honda, and it’s reliable and gets you where you need to go. And at least you’re not driving a car from the ’70s with a leak in the fuel-line and a plastic Jaguar-sculpture taped on the hood.
