Gratuity: Something 'voluntarily' given in return for a favour or service, as a recompense or acknowledgment. It's creeping into the UK (even in retail!), but the majority of Brits say "F**k, no!" Employers HAVE to pay a Living Wage in the UK, and as said: voluntary tips are only in restaurants - and ONLY if the service is quick and smooth & polite. USA Employers should stop paying 'Sweatshop' wages, instead of expecting customers to pay them in tips.

My wife had a stoke while we were visiting the UK. NHS were miracle workers and very kind besides. Because we were foreigners, there was a hospital bill. When my credit card wouldn't go through, the hospital business office told me "Just mail us a check when you get home. And if you don't, what can we do about it?" Imagine an American hospital saying that. (The credit card charge went through after the cc company got clearance from me by email.)

OMG the appropriate response to someone being murdered is never "I have no sympathy." I don't care if he was complicit in America's f'd up health system. You cannot possibly say that because children get shot it's more acceptable for other people to be targeted. This is a completely f****d up, monstrous thing to say. It's tantamount to advocating murder of certain individuals because of what they stand for.

I'm from Australia, so the concept of gun violence being normalised, especially against kids, is unfathomable to me. Also, the health system in the USA is unfathomable to me aswell. Ours isn't perfect, but any medical bills are a hell of ALOT lower! My partners Dad died in 2020 from complications due to diabetes and heart disease. The medical system was awesome 🥰, even though they couldn't save his life, they did absolutely everything they could to try....even flew a specialised heart surgeon from the other side of the country to perform surgery just for him. All this without ANY bill to his widow afterwards! I imagine if this happened in the USA, there would've been a MASSIVE bill to deal with afterwards. My heart goes out to all you people over there who are living by low-medium means ❤️❤️❤️ As for all the parasites who make millions from taking advantage of you, they can go f$#k themselves with a sideways chainsaw🤬

Same here in the UK. Everyone like to take pot shots at the NHS but what it does is amazing when you compare to some (ahem) other systems out there. The end of life care my dad received was outstanding.

Most cars still are. And most people here can drive a manual even if they own an auto. But I can see that changing over the next 10-20 years.

Some of these are a bit odd. I can understand the aversion to appliances with unnecessary smart features etc but what's wrong with a rice cooker, bread maker or microwave? As tech goes they're pretty harmless. Even tumble dryers have their place. Line drying will always be my preferred method but I live in a country where it seems to be raining 95% of the year and I live in a old house that already suffers badly with condensation build up. For my family of four (which includes a teenager) being able to wash and dry clothes quickly has become a necessity.

I last went out with my mates (all in our mid forties) for a few drinks just before Christmas. As we're sitting in the pub I reach into my pocket, pull out some pills and pop a couple of them. One of my friends look at me as if to say "you're not still doing stuff like that are you" until I explained they were for indigestion as the lager wasn't sitting well with me and I had predicted that would happen so planned ahead. All of a sudden it was a chorus of "give me some too".

I'll be 43 next month (Feb 22nd.) I remember when I was a little kid, like 11 or 12, and I thought being 30 was impossibly old. I remember visiting my grandmother with my dad (she had dementia or possibly Alzheimer's and was living in a facility) and I told my dad I didn't want to ever get old. I told him (quite calmly) that I planned on simply killing myself when I turned 45. My dad and I discovered my major depressive disorder that day :p But now that I'm nearing the age that I randomly chose to unalive myself at (I'm not sure why I chose 45 at the time) I find that I have a lot to live for, even if my neck DOES get all croggled if I sleep weird. I have my pets, I have books to read, I have art to draw, and I have you, my Panda friends :)

McDonalds. Obviously they'd never say it themselves but they and we all knew it was never meant to be fine dining, its key to success was being a cheap and quick belly filler. These days take a family of four there for food and you'll be lucky to get change from £50. Unfortunately though the quality hasn't increased in conjunction with the price so same old stuff for thrice the price. And the less said about the utterly underwhelming and over hyped McRib the better!!

Texting a person who is always late is useless. They will always tell you. They’re on the way. They are almost there.They are five minutes out. You will sit there and wait longer while they are still late after telling you that. Five minutes means at least 30 minutes to an hour to those people. I think you are the chronically late "friend", "Michelle." Just because OP put up with the behavior for so long doesn't make her in the wrong because she no longer chooses to do so. No one gets to dictate my time because they choose to be selfish and disrespectful. The way to get the stress out of your life in dealing with such people is not to enable them, but to cut ties with them. One of my biggest pet hates is people who are chronically late. Even worse is when they can't be bothered to let you know they're running late. Even worse than that is when they do eventually turn up they think it's hilarious and one big joke. It's disrespectful. It takes less than a minute to message the person who is waiting for you and it is basic common courtesy.

What?? That makes no sense. If you agree to meet someone at a set time that IS a boundary. 10 or 15 minutes late, ok, it's annoying but things happen but 40 minutes late with no kind of indication of the reason for lateness, hell no!

I 100% agree with you on this. Chronically late people will always blame some external reason such as ADHD (self diagnosed most of the time}, kids etc as you've said. But I'll bet you they're never bloody late for stuff that's important to them like work stuff or other things THEY have arranged

It actually worked out quite well for me, a lot of things advantageously fell in to place at just the right time. Before lockdown kicked in I had just finished paying off two quite big loans. I also had been promising myself for years I would get fit but had always put it off simply because work took up a lot of my time and any free time I had I was simply too tired to do anything strenuous. All of a sudden I had extra cash and bags of free time (even though I was WFH). Fast forward two years after the initial lockdown and I had dropped 29kg in weight, taken up running (which I still do today) built up a nice pot of savings and got a lot of those niggly jobs around the house ticked off.

My workplace was exalting the benefits of conducting meetings via video rather than face to face for a few years before the pandemic. As our offices are dotted throughout the country it was encouraged as a way to cut down on cross country jaunts to meet with colleagues, reduce our carbon footprint, prevent burnout for those travelling frequently, etc. When the pandemic hit it was even more lauded. But now, apparently face to face is better so people must attend the office X amount of times a week. Basically, video conferencing was a god send when we were doing it from the office itself yet doing exactly that same thing but from home instead is somehow ineffective??

The only one I can suggest is buy a multi tool you can carry in your pocket. The type that comes with pliers, a blade, scissors, screw drivers etc. I bought one years ago and it's one of, if not the, most useful things I ever purchased.

When my wife and I went to Vegas for the first time I was taken aback by the sheer size of the casinos. You might see them in TV shows or movies but it doesn't really prepare you until you're stood there in person. I remember popping to the toilet and left my wife playing a machine. She got up and moved to a different machine when I was gone and it took me a good half an hour to find her again. I can totally see how people can lose hours and hours of their time in those places.

You are totally correct in the sense that observing cultural differences is not inherently offensive. However, BP has a history of these types of articles which, on the surface just seem like they are harmless observations but it's not really true. If they just popped up once in a while then no problem but it's pervasive on BP. It's 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other I find. Older cars have their obvious problems but pretty much can be fixed by any back street mechanic or even someone at home if they have the tools and skills. My friend purchased a new car last year, all singing and dancing. Basically a PC on wheels. However when something went wrong with it and he took it to his mechanic of years he was told they couldn't fix it. It needed to go back to the dealership where they couldn't even diagnose the problem. Long story short his car was in there for weeks and weeks until the problem was eventually sorted. He lives in dread of it happening again.
