Some things should not be made fun of, which makes it just that much more fun - with the help of dark humor, we’re able to get through a tragic situation with some laughter. Every day, more and more talented creators make dark humor comics to lighten up our days, and the “Prime Slime” artist duo is no exception.

The French artists use fairy tales, historical facts, and daily situations for inspiration and turn them into “lively comic strips with good tastes of absurdity and black humor,” as it says in “Prime Slime’s” Instagram bio.

“Prime Slime” consists of two creators: Rémy, who writes all the jokes and thinks about their rhythm, and Clément, who does all the drawings. When asked how long it takes them to finish one of their comics, the duo said: “When we started Prime Slime back in 2017, we could finish one comic in 4 to 6 hours. Now it takes between 10 and 15 hours depending on the number of details in the backgrounds and (of course) the number of panels.”

“Every theme is an opportunity to do comedy, even the darkest ones,” says Rémy. “Dark humor is a way to step back and extricate yourself from the horrors of the world. It's not because the theme is not funny that you can't afford to make funny jokes about it. Since Death is laughing at us, let us also laugh at her."

Talking about their creative process, Rémy explains that “it really depends on the joke but usually I write a list of themes I want to talk about (pirates, space, desert, fairy tales, Western, Starbucks, war, death, time travel...) and then I write all the jokes/ideas that come up for each one (good or bad). After a while, I start to identify the ones I find the most interesting and I start polishing them to have the proper rhythm and to serve the punchline.

Then I send a little sketch to Clément, he shares his tablet screen on Skype and then we can work together on it. After 10 to 15 hours drawing the new comic strip, we post it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Saturday at 1 pm, and then... we start again!”

As for facing creative block, Rémy says: “There is always a time when creativity is a little rusty and when it takes a little more effort and desire to come up with new ideas. It's like being in quicksand: you try to come up with a good joke, but the more you try, the less successful you are. This is not a very original piece of advice, but I have noticed that when I cannot come up with ideas, the best is to put my body in automatic mode so that the brain is more available: take a shower, go for a walk. It really helps.”

The talented artists have just released a book "Prime Slime" with a lot of their favorite comics in it: “We are really proud of it and it is a big achievement for both of us after 1 whole year working on it.” As for the future, the duo is also dreaming about making animated shorts with the characters they’ve created.

These are two types of "madeleines" cupcakes. The one on the scene is shown as a freak to the oher ones, and cries to illustrate with a pun the French expression "pleurer comme une Madeleine" (to cry like a Magdalene).

The first and only time, until now, that I had ever heard of these things was when I first saw “the Transporter”.
