Photobomb By Kathryn Trott
"Jeff stealing the limelight from his brother Jaffa."
We asked one of the founders of the contest, Tom, what the main goal of these awards is: "We have two - to raise awareness of animal welfare and shine a spotlight on those charities and organizations trying to improve the lives of unwanted and neglected animals. And to raise a smile and celebrate the importance of our pets and what they mean to us."
Embrace Of Love By Svetlana Pisareva
"Russia Siba’s puppy cuddles with his beloved cat."
Photobomb By Mollie Cheary
"Bailey was so excited to see her friends, she couldn’t sit still for a photo!"
Here is how the awards started: "The Awards were started by Paul Joynson-Hicks and myself - Tom Sullam, having created the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards (our sister competition) a few years earlier, we wanted to do something similar for pets."
Whizz Pop By Zoe Ross
"Playing with bubbles in the garden. I think I may have swallowed one."
Sit By Suzi Lonergan
"Our granddaughter gave the command to sit. Beau is very obedient."
Tom shares the difficulties they run into when running this contest: "Probably choosing the shortlist. There are so many great images entered that we have to be very thorough and it is so hard to pick your favorites from thousands of entries."
Hugo The Photobomber! By Chloe Beck
"This is my best friend Faith and her husband Alex… And their cheeky Sproodle, Hugo. Faith wanted a photograph to mark a special occasion – her first outing after shielding at home for 14 months. Hugo jumped into the frame at just the right moment! He’s a lockdown pup, so he hasn’t quite gotten used to the excitement of being around other people yet hehe."
Muttford And Chum By Luke O’brien
"Losing the opportunity to play with my human bandmates during the lockdown, Flint, my rescue dog, soon taught me that we didn’t just have sharp bones in common, but musical ones too. He soon became the perfect substitute for a collaborative stomp up at home, so much so that we felt we deserved our own band name (Muttford and Chum). With my camera set up remotely during this shoot, I think it’s fair to say that the image is proof that his conviction as a performer matches my own – well, we were covering 'treats and tugs and dinner bowls' by Ian Puli and the Boneheads."
Here are some of the topics they cover in their contests: "We have several competition categories, including Pets who look like their owners, Juniors, Horses, Cats, Dogs, All Other Creatures, Video."
Ostrich Style By Manel Subirats Ferrer
"Little Nuka playing hide and seek one day at the beach."
The Eureka Moment! By Sophie Bonnefoi
"Cutie and Speedy are 2 chicks hatched from eggs placed in an incubator at home in August 2020. They spent their first few weeks indoors. In the photo, they are just over 2 weeks old. They were curious about everything. This is the day they discovered their own shadow. It was hilarious to see them wondering and exploring that 'dark thing' that was moving with them!"
Tom shares what he thinks makes a funny pet photo: "The humor has to come first, so it has to make us laugh, sometimes it is the animal’s expression or the position the camera catches them in. It’s about snapping that perfect moment, which is much harder to do than it sounds, so we take our hats off to all our finalists."
Nosy Neighbour By Colin Doyle
"According to Ozzy, we need a new fence panel ASAP. He is fed up with Chester, our nosy next-door neighbor, spying on him every time he has a meal."
Crazy In Love With Fall By Diana Jill Mehner
"This is Leia. As you can see, she definitely loves playing with all the leaves in autumn – and yes, it was really tricky to take this picture because you never know where the dog will act and what it is going to do next."
Crazy in Love or maybe...you know...just crazy...(but in a good way)
We asked Tom what makes a good photographer: "Oooooh, now that is a tricky question! In my humble opinion, a good photographer is someone that can visualize the image before they have taken it! That may sound difficult, but given the huge amount of sensational photography that I see every day, there are many many people with this talent. A good photograph combines great timing, composition, light and it has to be in focus. If those 4 elements come together at the same time, you can be sure you have a winner!"
Paint Me Like One Of Your French Girls! By Anna Chambers
"Paddy, who is not allowed on the sofa but thinks he is. Does he care? Nope."
House Squatter! By Thomas Marlie
"Our cat Simba occupying the owl box."
Here's when the competition started and how long they're planning on continuing it: "Our very first one was in 2017 but then we had a break, came back in 2020 and so this is our 2nd consecutive year. We hope to be doing them for years to come."
Good Morning By Mary Ellis
"I like to visit the stable horses before I begin my hike at the State Park… This is the reply I received when I said Good Morning."
Wine Time! By Kathryn Clark
"It’s that time of day again! Little Blue enjoys it almost as much as me."
Tom opens up what inspires them to keep on doing these awards: "The photos and videos entered are truly heart-warming. Especially when you read the descriptions that are submitted with them and understand how the pets are part of the family for most people. Plus that we are able to give a huge donation to our Competition Charity - Animal Support Angels, this year it was £10,000 as part of our partnership with Animal Friends Insurance."
Boing By Christine Johnson
"I was busy playing with my dog on the beach and this dog came to play. I liked the shapes he was making in the air."
Never-Ending Poodle By Darren Hall
"This is Ted the Poodle. I’m pretty sure he has never seen the film but the number of people who comment that he looks like Falkor from Never-Ending Story would suggest he may be a fan."
Here's some advice for you if you want to be a part of the Comedy Pet Photography Awards 2022: "Keep your camera phone handy just in case, as you never know when your pet will do something fun and take lots of pictures, have fun with them. It can be really engaging and entertaining. Get the whole family involved and if you can enter, you know that you are helping to support a brilliant cause!"
My Big Brother By Elizabeth Finney
"Our kitten Lola just loves her brother Snoopy so much she doesn’t leave him alone!"
Sunbathers By Catherine Falls
"Barbara Ann wants to sunbathe too."
Tom tells us more about himself and his life: "I was brought up in Paris until the age of 11 when I moved to London. After university in the UK, I followed the crowd and got a job in the city of London, working in finance. An odd choice, but it took me 7 years before I realized the error of my ways and dropped it all to do photography. I have been heavily influenced by landscape photographer great Charlie Waite and learned a lot of my techniques from him. My photographic journey has been broad, encompassing working on movie sets, landscape photography, commercial and wildlife photography. But maybe I should blame my itinerant parents for making it hard for me to settle on one thing also!"
Chilling Ludwig By Julien Gloria
"When I go back home, and my cat is already watching the new Netflix series without me!"
Peep Hole By Millie Kerr
"Someone in my parents’ neighborhood in San Antonio, Texas, put in a peep hole for their terrier so it can look through the fence! I love passing by and seeing its adorable face peering at me."
Here's something Tom wanted to share with the readers of Bored Panda: "The Comedy Pet competition is a fledgling in the world of photography competitions, but already people are taking notice that humor can help raise awareness. The more we all respond to this, the better!"
A Warm Spot On A Cold Day By Corey Seeman
"Two of the morning regulars at the dog park are Gary (hound mix with the jacket) and Kona – who is one of the most chill dogs ever. Got this picture of Gary finding a warm place to sit on this cold winter’s day – February 9th, 2021."
A Little Massage By Christine Kaltenecker
"Both dogs are former shelter dogs from Romania. The big one is called 'Milly' and visibly enjoys the 'massage' from little 'Holly.'"
Cheeeese! By David Poznanter
"Oak on a windy day showing off his pearly whites!"
Long Cow By Pier Luigi Dodi
"Optical illusion or gene mutation?!"
That Was A Funny Joke! By Bernard Sim
"3-year-old Pomeranian, very calm. Loves treats."
Those Ears By Charlotte Fenwick
"Rayna is a rescue dog, who spent the first years of her life fending for herself on the streets of Romania. We rescued her in 2019, and are entertained by her quirky ways every day. Everyone who meets Rayna falls in love with her, and we think her ears have a lot to do with that!"
Freddie & Alison By Ken Whalley
"Freddie’s the one with the brown nose."
I nearly missed the ginger cat in the background, I thought the title referred to the human.
So What? By Lucy Slater
"Vincent the cat. This is how I like to sit!"
Caught Red-Pawed By Danielle Wood
"This is my very mischievous Bengal cat, Bailey! On this particular day, I was trying to put away the washing but he would do whatever it took to get those all-important belly rubs!"
Jurassic Bark By Carmen Cromer
"My golden retriever, Clementine, loves to stick her face in front of the hose while I water the plants. Her expression in this photo made me think of a tyrannosaurus rex, hence the title, Jurassic Bark… duh nuh nuuuh nuhnuh, duh nuh nuuuh nuh nuh, dun duh duuuh nuh nuh nuh nUUUUUUhhhh."
Albie The Kitten By Ann-Marie Connolly
"Albie our kitten is full of energy and fun but as you’ll see from the photo he also takes some time out to relax and recharge his batteries."
“…that Was A Good One!!” By Jakub Gojda
"This photo was taken by accident during the photography of my ex-girlfriend with her beloved mare. For this cheerful moment, I thank the fly that sat on the horse’s nose and he instinctively shook his head. And so it seems that the humor between a horse and a woman is definitely not missing."
Grace Wins Gold In The Rythmic Gymnastics By Walker Walker
"Grace was a feral kitten and this was one of the games I played with her to help get her used to human company."
