Just Bought A New House And My First Project Was To Paint My Stairs. The Entire House Is Greige And I Couldn't Handle It Any Longer. 🙈 I Stared At Paint Swatches For Nearly Two Months Before Moving In To Get The Shades Right, But I Think I Did Alright. 😂
Interior designers seem to be in agreement: in an era dominated by minimalist homes, maximalism is making a comeback. Many people are trading simple comforts and practicality for something more fun and lively. To learn more about what makes this eclectic style so appealing, Bored Panda got in touch with Mel and V, the founders of the Facebook page in today’s spotlight.
“V and I became friends in 2020 after both starting Instagram accounts—A Whole New Build and The Electric Penguin—which documented our colorful new-build homes,” shares Mel. “We’ve since met a number of times in real life and had the surreal experience of visiting each others’ homes!”

My uncle had a wall like this, he's in his 60's now and had a lot of pen pals when he was in his 20's. We had a game where he said something like 'Where's the palm tree' and had to find it.
Mel and V both share a deep passion for bold decor. “Maximalism is such a broad term, and there are lots of sub-genres within it from dark and moody maximalism through to Barbie pink everything!” Mel describes. “Many people assume maximalism means lots of clutter, but for me personally it’s more about adding color and pattern in a way that makes me happy.” V echoes this sentiment, “Being surrounded by color brings me an incredible amount of joy and so this style of decorating really does improve my quality of life.”

V goes on to say, “I love that it gives you a chance to fully express who you are without worrying about trends or decor rules”. Maximalism has a very liberating quality compared to other styles.
“I am addicted to gallery walls!” Mel exclaims, sharing her tastes. She also loves the freedom maximalism offers, sparking boundless creativity. “I’m a firm believer in just working with things that make you happy, to create your dream space, no matter how whimsical it might be or what trends say.”
I Just Finished Our Laundry Room (Used To Be Cream With A Bare Grey Patch Where A Cupboard Used To Be). I’m Totally In Love With This Teal Color, It’s A Lighter And Slightly Bluer Shade Of Those Tiny Tiles On The Floor
My Guest Bedroom I Revamped
Same here, the before looks light and airy with lots of space, the after dark and cluttered. But what matters the most is that the owner is happy with it :)
Load More Replies...I like the after. It looks luxurious, vintage and very comfy. While the "before" shot was lighter, it also looked cheap and worn, with plastic bins, ugly floors and children's wallpaper. The After looks like a room at an expensive B & B. IMHO, anyway.
My gosh, you have created my dream bedroom. Love Love Love what you have done
Definitely before. It's impersonal - something that you need for a guest room. The second one looks like a den of some very old lady (and dusty too). Sorry, that's personal impression.
I’d stay there anytime. Very well done. No more mishmash items and colours. I really like the the boldness - it’s actually soothing and comfortable. Love it 🥰.
While I like the colors in the before, I love the cohesiveness pf the after much better. The after is clearly thought out but the before is kind of hodge podge.
The new room is so cozy! Looks very much like a cottage. Love it!
Are you guys actually joking? Who, besides a 6 year old boy who wants tiles on the bedroom floor, would like first better??
I'm not a fan of either, but find the after warmer and more inviting.
Counter to most on BP, I'm breathless with admiration for the designer here, this is a beautiful hug of a room!!!! Yes, it is darker but for me it's a good darkness. I don't like wishy washy /whitish/ pastel /walls in my bedroom, personally; I want this room, it's outstandingly perfect!!! 💖💖💖
Well, 'after' doesn't look that bad, but I liked 'before' better. It was airier and made room look bigger.
The flower wall is a bit too much. Otherwise I like the furniture and colors. It‘s just…. heavy
Me 2, the after is so dark I like the bed and the melon color on the wall to the right.
in some houses two rooms are connected. maybe they didnt want to use the door that leads to the other bedroom, so might as well block it if its not used. 💁🏻♀️

Both Mel and V were active in other groups devoted to maximalism before creating theirs, often receiving numerous questions about their decor. However, they found these pages were “policed very heavily,” especially when it came to influencers sharing their content. Mel recalls, “We found ourselves getting banned for answering questions like ‘Where can I follow you?’ or ‘Please link where x item is from’.”

“We couldn’t understand why groups wouldn’t want to encourage sharing of popular accounts as it generates great engagement for their group. So we decided we’d start our own!” In one year, their page grew to 170,000 members. They allow small businesses to advertise on specific days and influencers to post their homes, promoting an inspirational environment. “We see it as a win-win!”

“The first rule of our group is kindness; we hope it remains a safe and encouraging space for people to share their homes and get ideas,” Mel emphasizes. Their bio reads, “If something isn’t your vibe, please scroll along - we’re sure you’ll find something that is and we want to hear how much you love it!” This positivity draws people from different corners of the internet to their maximalist community.

And if you’re someone who feels a bit lost in finding your aesthetic, Mel’s journey might resonate with you. “Having been drawn into the grey trend when I first bought my home, it never really felt right, and it’s taken a long time to find my style—it evolves as I get older too, but I enjoy experimenting!” she says. The maximalist duo suggests being patient with your design process and paying attention to the atmosphere you want to create. “Don’t just assume that bedrooms should be calm, and bathrooms should be serene—what do you want it to feel like?”

For those looking to incorporate maximalist elements into their homes, Mel and V recommend starting with Pinterest and creating mood boards. “Pin things you love and look for correlations, it could be you’re pinning lots of blue or a specific type of furniture style. Once you’ve found the things you’re loving subconsciously, make those the centre of your design and build the room around it,” says Mel.

V believes adding things to your Pinterest board based on your “gut feeling rather than being influenced by what society says your home should look like will really help you understand what decor brings you the most joy.” This could be anything from “a pink armchair to some beautiful wallpaper.” Once you’ve gathered enough material, you can create boards for each room.
“Choose things that make you smile and they’ll never go out of style,” adds Mel. And when the time comes to bring those ideas to life, V reminds, “Remember it’s only paint… If you don’t like it you can always repaint it!”

Load More Replies...Maximalism still needs cohesion in order to allow the eye to flow naturally around the room, and rest on a focal point. A lot of these did NOT achieve that. If you go into anywhere, especially a home, that leaves you unsure of where to rest your eyes, then it's been badly done. Also there were a lot of images in here that were not maximalism, they were just colourful.
BIL is an artist and their whole house is full of art and collectibles but it is well curated, not crowded looking. I wish I had his eye.
Load More Replies...Love these! It's so cool to see how different people decorate their spaces.
Respectfully, I have to say it's a HARD NO for me. It's bad for my migraine, anxiety (constantly feeling uncomfortable), and it looks like a nightmare to clean. Everyone is different as I'm more contemporary mixed with modern accent, simple yet elegant is my preferred choice of style for my house.
I'm with you, a few quirky bits here and there or one feature wall is all I can take!
Load More Replies...While I personally prefer colourful minimalism I do appreciate these for the amount of love and work that went into them.
I love this! I understand that maximalism is sometimes a lot for others, but I personally really enjoy it! It kinda is calming, like you are being surrounded by your thoughts in the form of objects. And I think it leads to some cool effects!
These burn my eyeballs and I love it t the same time ;) A lot of those did feel a bit over the top for my liking, but I love people expressing themselves in their houses. It is good to know though that you can do a lot of colour in calm spaces too, if done right. In fact, white or beige spaces often become quite overwhelming because all the clutter in the room stands out so much against the light background.
I love maximalism homes, they're so full of character and tells about the people or person living in them
What I love the most about these is that every one of these people is making beautiful unique spaces that reach to their heart to the souls. The more of that we people do the happier people are.
Maybe this is stereotype German but I thought many times about the gathering dust everywhere. So many things! We have a dog who is shedding her fur for summer now and it is a bit like these old western movies where you can see tumbleweed rolling by only it is made of dust and dog hair. Nope, minimalism for me, please.
I find eye-searingly bright colors on walls and furnishings to be very soothing and relaxing. I know that most people are the opposite, though.
See this post today and I suddenly come to the conclusion that my dad was a maximalist. Growing up, I often heard mom complained about the cluttering in our house, mostly came from the various decorations dad placed in and around every rooms (well, except the small bathroom) and the garden was the worse. His theme was nature-based so you can imagine lots and lots of real and fake plants, little animal statuettes, small fish bowls, paintings of fruits and flowers etc... everywhere. After he passed away, mom and I redecorated, decluttered and gave away a lot of his old things. We still have decorations in the living room, kitchen and bedrooms but they're less cluttered now and all must be cat-proofed.
OMG! Hope that they've talked to their realtor. They've totally trashed the re-sale value of these homes.
Maximalism mindset tends to go hand-in-hand with viewing a house as a home over an investment.
Load More Replies...To many of these were overdone, or badly done.. they're just jumbled rooms, no cohesion, just a ton a stuff all crammed in there. I can't imagine what they're like to clean, and with my anxiety, I feel like I'd be in edge all the time. Plus, what's with all the neon signs?! No one should have those in their homes, especially not the bedroom. It's so tacky!
You're not the one cleaning them, and with respect, YOUR anxiety is probably not much of a concern to the people who live in these spaces. It's fine if they're not for you, but the people who live there love their spaces neon signs and all.
