Dating Site OkCupid Adds A New Option That Allows Users To Filter Out Climate Change Deniers, Not Everyone Supports It
Dating site OkCupid has just introduced a new feature that’s supposed to let its users form even closer connections. After a 240% increase in environment-related keywords on people’s profiles (like, “global warming,” “Greta Thunberg” and “recycle”), the company introduced filters so everyone can get rid of climate change deniers when browsing potential partners.
According to Gizmodo, an overwhelming majority of OkCupid users really care about the climate. 97% of them believe that climate change is real, and 82% are concerned about it. Also, 90% of OkCupid users said they would correct their actions if they discovered they were harming the environment.
In general, OkCupid’s algorithms try to match people with similar interests and beliefs. So the way a user answers questions about climate change could determine who they match with. Even if they don’t turn on the denier filter.

“Since your match percentage with someone shows how compatible you two are, if you are a climate change activist and they think climate change is fake news, your match percentage is going to decrease,” Michael Kaye, OKCupid’s Global Communication Manager, told Gizmodo. Since most people on the platform aren’t climate deniers, that means vocally caring about the climate crisis is helping people get laid.
This move reflects a shift in society’s take on the issue that has been happening for quite some time now. The Global Risks Report, published by the World Economic Forum, stated that, for the first time in its 15-year history, the top five risks facing the world are all linked to the climate crisis. These included extreme weather, climate action failure, natural disasters, biodiversity loss, and human-made environmental disasters.
But when it comes to these topics, not everyone sees eye-to-eye.
The announcement immediately ignited heated discussions

Very good thing this. Also add an 'anti vaxxer' filter and 'votes for giant baby' filter (for our US friends). I would filter on those exactly as I filter on 'non-smoker', 'doesn't want children' and 'knows how a dishwasher works'. I mean, some people filter on HEIGHT for heaven's sake! HEIGHT! As if that is any indication for a good person and/or relationship. Having a fundamental distrust of science is a lot more important to know about than almost everything else people filter on on those apps.
Dating (online and offline) would be so much easier for me if I just knew someone's stance on science, religion, politics, etc. beforehand. I don't want to waste time on the willfully ignorant and right-wing.
Load More Replies...To those saying climate is always changing: yes, that is correct. But we're making it change a lot faster. That's the problem.
They say "climate is always changing" as if it changes by itself for no apparent reason. That's not correct. Climate is always changing because things are happening that cause it to change - precession of the Earth's rotational axis, solar cycles, volcanoes, etc. We can measure those things now. We know that the only thing that's happened in the past few centuries to account for the temperature increase is the CO2 from fossil fuels.
Load More Replies...Can I also get an "anti-vaxxer" & "flat-earther" one too!!! Oh...and I would really love one that filters out guys that answer the question of what do they do with "I'm a rapper"...do that and I'll upgrade to a premium subscription :)
