This Guy Finds Out That His Face Is Being Used All Over China To Advertise Churros

We all have our preferences when it comes to food but let’s just be honest here, very few of us can resist having a sweet tooth. Just think about all the sweets, chocolates, fluffy marshmallows this world can offer you. But today’s story is leaning more towards some traditional desserts. Apparently, your love for some particular food can get you famous… And yes, of course, there’s a catch here – it can get you famous in the land where almost everything is possible. If a little squeaky voice in the back of your head just whispered ‘China’, congratulations for being correct. Scroll down to see how a guy found out his image related to some dessert is being used all over Beijing.

For those of you who don’t already know, these are churros

It’s a thin fried pastry which originated from Spain and Portugal. They first spread to countries that had loads of Spanish-speaking immigrants but are loved and sold all over the world nowadays.

Only to find out years later, his image is being used in China

And by ‘all over the world’, we mean that China is no exception, there’s no wonder in that. The surprising thing in this story is the Chinese means of advertising.

Promoting the pastries all over Beijing

He might have never known if it wasn’t for a friend traveling in China

If you look close enough, you can see that all these churros shops have the same picture of a guy holding a cup of churros in his hand in the middle of the shop. The curious thing is he never intended for the picture to be used for advertising.

Who noticed his image right in the middle of several churro shops in China

The picture was apparently taken from his friend’s Flickr account

It was taken by his friend in The Innocent Smoothie Festival in Regents Park London back in 2007 and posted to the friend’s Flickr account. The Chinese must have found it there and thought his facial expression would best describe the excitement they associate with their product and would draw people in. They weren’t wrong, according to the crowded pictures.

Only in China, right?

And this is how he actually looks without the snack in his hand

He may have never known of this if it wasn’t for a friend who traveled to China and noticed his face in one of the shops. And then he was only one Google search away from finding out this is a common sight all over Beijing. What a way to get big, huh?

Sent the required photo with a job application only to arrive in Beijing to find it had been used in the company brochure and advertising of other unrelated products.

I can sympathise. Some of my student work keeps cropping up in the weirdest places. One seems to be a favourite for frame companies in Canada only, and two others have now become the face for several things on government health websites in Russia. It is always worth reverse image searching your work every now and again, with a legal template on hand.

I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. I had my work used without my consent several times. Once a Chinese manufacturer was caught by some of my followers selling bathroom accessories with a dolphin painting I've done for a customer. It's sad but almost unavoidable the moment you start promoting your work online.
