SoluBag – Biodegradable Shopping Bag That Disbands In Water

Chile, occupying a long strip of land in the southwest of South America, has boastfully become the first country in the continent to ban the plastic bags! Hooray!

As it takes over 150 years to degrade, the traditional single-use shopping bags are undoubtedly the main culprit for the threatening plastic pollution. What’s even scarier is that an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are being consumed worldwide annually.

Worry not!

A Chilean startup, called SoluBag, has got the planet’s back!

The founders, Cristian Olivares & Roberto Astete, have managed to create a shopping bag that seems like a regular plastic bag, however, there is one crucial distinction – it dissolves in warm water for about 3 minutes. As an extra perk, it doesn’t leave ANY toxic residue behind.

Additionally, Solubag’s raw material can be expelled in any plastic extrusion machine, which allows it to be scaled very quick.

The team behind the project is currently building partnerships with plastic bags producers to quickly make a positive impact on the planet.

There are so many variations of environmentally friendly and easily biodegradable bags (some even safe to eat) and they are all fantastic ideas. Unfortunately they are no good if no companies will get on board and use these products instead of the cheaper, more environmentally dangerous plastic bags. Hopefully one day companies will get with the program and give consumers what they want.
