Schoolkids In Vietnam Village Ferried Across River In Plastic Bags To Get To School
Where I’m from, we would get to stay home from school when the temperature hit 40°C. We would eagerly follow the weather in early and late summer, praying for a heatwave because we didn’t really value school that much and would much rather hang out at the river or local pool. We knew we’d be fine either way.
However, for these kids in Huoi Ha, a remote village in Dien Bien province, Vietnam, they know that education is vital if they are to lift themselves from poverty, and will go to great lengths to ensure that they can attend class. Even if it means climbing into a plastic bag to be dragged across a raging river!

Flimsy bamboo bridges and rafts, which are used for most of the year in the village, are unsuitable when the river floods during the rainy season. This is when it’s time to get creative as “healthy men, fluent in rivers,” are given the task of pulling more than 50 schoolkids across the potentially deadly torrents.

According to Vov.Vn, the kids are afraid but determined, watching anxiously as they await their turn. The crossing is extremely dangerous because only a small mistake can be swept away by strong floodwaters.

Mr. Vo A Giong, the head of Huoi Ha village, said: “Now this stream is very dangerous, my relatives usually take the children by raft but now cannot use it. I hope that the state will invest in suspension bridges soon for people to travel more conveniently. ”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, Principal of Na Sang secondary school boarding school, agreed that something must be done about the situation. “The flood rains have divided Huoi Ha village,” she said. “From our school, there are more than 50 students in Huoi Ha village and so far, the teachers and parents have mobilized the children to attend classes the best they can.”

“However, traveling is also difficult. We also hope that in the coming school years, there will be more investment from the state with more modern bridges to bring children to school in these rainy seasons.”

Because getting across the river is just the beginning for these dedicated kids. Having survived the crossing, a hike of about 5 hours over 15km of slippery forest roads awaits them.

It certainly puts our ‘stay home because it’s quite hot’ attitudes into perspective! Knowledge and education is truly a wonderful thing, and we have great respect for these children and their parents who recognize that.

Thanks to the investigative journalism of the good people at Vov.Vn, it appears that a solution to this problem could be on the horizon, as the government looks to invest in more bridges in the remote region.
Soon after the release of the original article, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The stated the following:
“After receiving the press agencies’ feedback on the situation of students still in the village Huoi Ha having to carry plastic bags to cross Nam Chim flood stream to school due to lack of investment in transport infrastructure, the Ministry of Transport has instructed Vietnam Road Administration to coordinate with local authorities at all levels to check and consider this issue.”

Share on FacebookI truly admire the dedication of these children, their parents, and the brave men who ferry them across. However, no child should ever have to be subjected to being ferried across a raging river in a plastic bag and then undergo another long 5 hour hiking ordeal just to get to school. This looks beyond terrifying. I truly hope that this town gets the infrastructure that they need.
Wow, how scary in so many ways. The possibility of suffocation from the bag, being swept away in the river etc. These people helping and these children making these dangerous trips surely are dedicated. Something seriously does need to be done and soon. EDIT: a bridge did end up getting built after this video surfaced but 2 months after completion the new bridge was destroyed by flood waters.
It was done on May 5th, 2014. :D The new bridge was officially opened. (thank goodness!!) https://vietnamnews.vn/society/254412/new-bridge-provides-safe-passage-to-school.html#rsKdXZPpG8yZ1JRE.97
Load More Replies...Does anyone know if an um change-not-charity organization is working in this area? Oxfam? RedCross/crescent ? * please do NOT start a new charity. Help me find one that is already close, then we can donate to them.
This way the needed things for a charity are already paid for. So that any donated money will go to help these kids. Not into things like computers / tax lawyers etc that any charity has to have. Those will be already sorted.
Load More Replies...That video was from 7 years ago. As far as I know they started surveying the land and began the bridge building project a year ago. (The collapsed bridge is from a different location).
how could we raised $1 billion donated to the Paris cathedral and we cant raise like, how much for a bridge?, no a fancy one but a functional one for these people. I compromise to start-follow-culminate a bridge for this peolple thru fund me If you guys compromise yourselves to make noise on the web to make people donate to the cause.
They did start building a bridge, from October last year I think.
Load More Replies...When you think how much these kids are willing to ensure in order to learn it makes kids in the "first world" look so ungrateful when they complain about things like uniforms and homework. (To be fair to them, modern kids in developed countries do tend to get more "stick" than they deserve. The pressure on them to do well is immense.)
Meanwhile, here in the West, most children would rather stay home... Says something about everyone's values and priorities :)
Well same story goes in my country especially those that lives in rural or isolated parts of the country wherein children goes to school by walking several kilometers through rivers and mountain that when it rains it's really dangerous for the rapid rivers and slippery mountain ridges. Government can't build closer schools to them because of lack of funds and staffs that wants to be designated to them.
Damn I really wish I was a billionaire and money was fluid so I could help build them a bridge, I don't know how people can fly there to record these things and not help.
Why not instead of 50 kids hiking 5 hours, we get one or two teachers to just move there? Or travel to the village every day themselves? I’m talking a couple adults vs. 50 children. Not that commenting here will help lol.
I have seen pictures how they are building fabulous buildings but yet these children have to do this just to get an education then walk almost 9.5 miles. I watched the film thinking would a American kid go through this for an education? Is this a daily event?
50 kids... Instead of kids crossing river then walking 5 hours why doesn't a Teacher do better and move to wear the kids are?!
I'm guessing there are probably at least 50 or more kids on the other side of the river, who go to the same school.. Otherwise good idea.

When I was 13 I remember buliding a rope bridge across a canyon with some friends one summer. We even made (some of) our own rope.
Go funding a bridge...*that* would be something I would donate to! Or funding a second school on the side these kids are on so they don't have to risk their lives for an education.
Vietnamese dont have F1 touring, motor GP , sky diver, adventure sports or Xgame . Because we risk our life everyday
I hope the government or a third party does something to fix the problem. I wonder how many kids where lost due to the strong currents in the river?

These are the type of stories I like to share with my students whenever they talk about how stupid school is, or when they complain about having having to be there. After those 200 plus girls were kidnapped in Nigeria, I said one of the most extraordinary things to me was all the girls that got up the next morning, and still went to school. They knew full well that they
might meet the same fate, yet they did it. The benefits an education afforded far outweighed the potential risk. I wish all students could see that.
Load More Replies...Sure, it might be fun if it wasn't necessary. The fact that it's the only way to do something as simple as go to school is so sad.
