Melissa and her boyfriend were robbed, shot and she became paralyzed from the chest down. She is a mother of 4 and the only apartment they can get is on the third floor of a building that has no handicap access, because she keeps getting rejected by landlords for various reasons.

Her teenage sons take turns carrying her up and down the stairs while her 11-year-old daughter takes the wheel chair. Since 2011, she has been on a Disability Section 8 waiting-list in Chicago, IL to be placed in an apartment that has handicap access.

I came up with the idea for my Women of Strength project when I was in a dark period and needed photography to heal. I am a single mom working in technology during the day and photography as a hobby to giveback. I do it in hopes to make the world a little brighter, make someone feel less alone, but mostly to set the example to my son of how I want him to be.
