48 Celebrities Who Revealed Their Mental Illnesses To Help Others Find Courage
It's hard to talk about your problems, but sometimes, someone else breaking the ice can help. And despite one in five Americans suffering from a diagnosable mental illness, this is a topic which many feel uncomfortable facing.
These celebrities have all publicly admitted that they have mental health issues, have sought help, and want those who also suffer from similar problems to seek treatment.
Are you surprised by any of these revelations? Are any of them particularly inspiring?

Elen Degeneres, Depression
i watched the Ellen show (sitcom) before she came out. I enjoyed it the first couple years. then Arye Gross left, it started to slide. THEN, she came out, and any semblance of humor left the show. I have no homophobia at all, close family member who is gay, another who is transgender. I quit watching because it wasn't funny and every single episode revolved around Ellen being gay. Ellen needs to face it, she didn't lose her show because of coming out of the closet, she lost it because her sexual orientation became her only focus and topic.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
This explains a LOT with who he is as an actor and why he nails every performance. OCD will cause you to strive for no less than perfect, even when you don't even want to be. Damn.
That's not what clue of OCD is. It's really serious condition where main problems are not obsessive actions, but obsessive thoughts in your head that you can't get rid of. Trust me actions are just cover for a terrible mess that is in head. :(
Load More Replies...One of my friends also have this. Everyone going crazy about her condition, but I think this thing is cute, even if it's a bit weird.
OCD is not cute, it is a mental disorer wich can be awfull ^^

That was so cool of them to admit to their mental illness. But very necessary, so we can all let go of the stigma of mental illness.
Thank you for sharing this as it helps the rest of us to not allow our mental heath to define us. I am proud that I am able to manage my mental health on most days. I lived in shame for years and felt so alone with the enormity of mental health issues I have struggled with - BPD, dyslexic, eating disorders, addiction, depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation. We need more of these as I am one of the lucky ones who managed to find help and now hold a degree in Counselling and help others...I am proud of my journey. x
I appreciate the article, however I do feel celebrities with different types of disorders should be here. Depression is almost like the 'glamorous poster child' of mental illness when it comes to the media. What about eating disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder, dissociative identity disorder, panic disorder....I could go on.
I think its unfair to say depression is the glamorous poster child of mental illness. Its a great thing that more celebrities are coming out saying they have depression, it just shows how prevalent depression is in our society and as such addresses stigma and highlights the needs for more services. In terms of people coming out regarding the other mental health concerns you mention maybe people still arebt comfortable talking about because of the stigma associated, i mean only now depression is being spoken about yet its so common, it must be so much harder to speak about the other illnesses.

Fear to reveal all those types of illness goes through the whole world. Depression is almost "acceptable" in our societies. But what about schizophrenia and similar disorders? Who would like to hire you if you came out? You employer would rather imagine you as Hannibal Lecter rather than a person fighting with illness, temporary weakness, disorder coming and passing in period of time. There's got to be more said in media, to change thinking and break stereotypes. A month ago we launched a campaign in Poland to support the brave people fighting with all those disorders and fight the stereotypes https://youtu.be/0g0l43SvJcs
Jim Jeffries has great answers. Hes very rude, bigoted, racist masoganistic etc but he suffers suicidal depression and admits it on stage. His comment helped a lot actually, stopped me thinking being famous and rich is the answer to everything.
For those that have depression, come and live with me 3 months and will change your mind :) Live is beautifull, you just have to see it with other eyes :)
That's one of the most ridiculous and invalidating things ive ever heard.. its like telling someone in a wheelchair to spend time with you and then they van walk again.
Load More Replies...I have a lot of mental issues myself. Next spring there will be a episode of a Dutch televisionshow called 'Je Zal Het Maar Hebben' about me and my ongoing war against anxiety and sadness. With that episode I hope I can help other people by seeking help for their issues.

Title said 48 celebrities, but here are only 23, where are the rest?
I wonder how these celebrity shrared their story. Through what media and all
Guy this post is very interesting. You should make more posts of other illnesses to show people they are not alone. This world is about the media and how perfect you are, is about suffering to achieve goals which are impossible to comply everyday's people. We are forced to NOT TO BE ourselves. We are forced to live a life which is about to get MORE MORE MORE and more. And we just let our moments to go away. I'd like to see articles about models talking about their struggles, how hard to accomplish themselves. I am mostly worry about the young generation who been hypnotized by today's marketing. Sad. Go out. Go to the nature. Breath some fresh air and try to get a break from this illness world.
