Even if it sometimes doesn’t feel like it, your actions as an employee can have massive effects on the company and its culture. For better or—unfortunately—for worse. Small things you do can set in motion a chain of events that you eventually regret.
Case in point, redditor u/Gerasans went on the Today I [Messed] Up online group to share how he indirectly drove his new head of human resources to have a breakdown at work after finding a way to ‘hack’ her training program. It’s something that he deeply regrets. Read on for the full story about workplace relations gone wrong, as well as the internet’s reactions.
Bored Panda has reached out to the author for further comment about the situation. We’ll update the article as soon as we hear back from him.
Seemingly small actions that go against the rules can have deeply negative repercussions for your colleagues

Toxic workplaces don’t just harm the employees, they also affect the bottom line
According to MIT Sloan Management Review, there are very practical reasons to focus on workplace culture. 90% of CEOs and CFOs in North America believe that improving corporate culture would also boost financial performance.
“Most of these executives ranked a healthy culture as one of the top three among all factors—including strategy, innovation, brand, patents, and others—in terms of its impact on results. More than 80% also acknowledged that their organization’s culture was not as healthy as it should be.”
Paradoxically, even though there was enough self-awareness regarding the need for improvement, leaders failed to invest enough time and resources in overhauling things. Part of the issue is that leaders are simply not sure where they can start.
Broadly speaking, there are five attributes of toxic culture: disrespectful, noninclusive, unethical, cutthroat, and abusive.
Toxic workplaces not only contribute to greater stress and burnout but can also lead to anxiety, depression, and physical disease.

Every single member of the company contributes to workplace culture with their actions
At the end of the day, stories like this one are a reminder that everyone—from ‘regular’ employees and middle managers to C-suite executives—is responsible for contributing to their company’s workplace culture. What you do, how you conduct yourself, and how you react to everything doesn’t just show what you value, it also directly affects the people you work with.
Unless you’re a fully remote freelancer, you work in a communal environment. Having soft skills is, therefore, invaluable. That means putting in the effort to develop high emotional intelligence, improving your communication and active listening skills, and generally trying to be more empathetic. These human aspects of work aren’t going away anytime soon.
Mocking someone in public, finding ways to cheat the system, etc. are all behaviors that contribute to a toxic environment. To be clear, no company is ‘perfect.’ Everyone makes mistakes from time to time. However, there are broad trends for the types of behavior that are deemed (un)acceptable.
A company that tolerates public insults against any staff members (senior or otherwise) likely has deeper issues that need to be addressed. There might be a breakdown in communication between the employees and management. Or there could be a lack of trust between different departments. Furthermore, the staff might feel underpaid, unmotivated, and unappreciated, so they feel the need to lash out or ‘game’ the system for their benefit.

It’s possible that the HR employee had a panic attack after being placed in a stressful work situation
The author’s head of HR likely had a panic attack. There’s nothing shameful about having a breakdown. It’s a natural reaction to being insulted in public, embarrassed in front of the company, and realizing that much of your hard work was a waste of your time.
Some of the most common signs of a panic attack include things like sweating, trembling, a racing heart, shortness of breath, and nausea. Meanwhile, you may also feel disorientation, a choking sensation, dizziness, ringing in your ears, tingling in your fingers, and a dry mouth.
NHS Inform notes that panic attacks can last anywhere between 5 to 30 minutes. They can be caused by many different factors, from work-related things like unemployment, retirement, and a massive workload to changes in your family situation like divorce, relationship problems, or having to care for a loved one.
Financial and health problems can also lead to panic and anxiety, as well as past experiences like bullying or neglect. Positive experiences can lead to panic, too, for example, things like having a baby, planning a wedding, or buying a house.
What is the workplace environment like at your job, dear Pandas? Have you ever watched a colleague of yours mock someone openly or try to cheat the system? How would you handle a situation where someone from management breaks down in public? Let us know in the comments.

I'd hate to work with OP. He's totally missed the point of the training which wasn't only health and safety, but also if the can follow instructions and report issues when they appear. He passed up on three opportunities to show the company he is an asset to them. I really really hope he's not incharge of anything that requires careful study, instructions, tasks because he will (according to his own admission) skip over steps, fail to finish all tasks involved in it. As for HR lady, I suspect that the nasty comment was the straw that broke camels back, one nasty taunt is unlikely to cause that reaction - tears possibly bit not a breakdown so bad an ambulance to be called
So many "smart" remarks could be made, BUT .... you are spot on ! "He's totally missed the point of the training" even if you know OSHA inside-out it could be useful. You pick up something new, get a good idea or spot a flaw, have something valuable to add
Load More Replies...Why is everyone acting like they're in high school? They're all grown adults, this is just really dumb. Obviously the guy mocking her is worse, but why is op pretty much acting proud of ignoring the point of the task he was given, and why is he spreading it to his colleague? Also didn't everyone do it during similar times? Would I have skipped the video too, maybe, but I wouldn't gossip about it
He talks about his office crush , I swear this is a high school
Load More Replies...Op feels bad about it, wishes they never told anyone and then proceeds the post the story on the internet. I can't help but get the feeling they're actually proud of they did.
So... apologise to her? Why post it online - was humiliating her in front of just 300 people not enough?
Sometimes I wonder if some people post stuff like this online in the hopes that someone will comment "bro, don't worry, that's not so bad, I did the same thing and caused 45 kittens to die!" or something worse, so that OP can feel better that their cruddy behavior "wasn't SO bad".
Load More Replies...The training was very good for both employers and employees, but OP decided to cheat, skip it and inform others to do the same. What a dumpass! Not all employers are enemies of the employees.
Cheese and rice.! No one WANTS to do mandatory training but it's there for a reason! Particularly when it's health and safety related! Not only did the OP help an entire company skip some important mandatory training, he helped them with a targeted attack against a person who was merely doing their job! The employer of OP needs to make an example of him by promoting him to customer.
Punishment for OP should have been that he had to design the next mandatory training course ;)
Load More Replies...I can't stand gossips. You find a cheat code, wow, good for you. Keep it to yourself. If you don't have experience with creating videos I can tell you that working on your own, approximately one minute of screen time takes more than one hour to create. To write the script and do the filming and create the quiz and everything that went into this training, probably took 2 weeks.
I would totally have done the same. Well, maybe not told everyone about it, but for sure I used to do this whenever possible for many many mandatory corporate training courses. If you can pass the test, then either you already know it all, ergo you didn't need the training, or the test (or the training material) was not fit for purpose. Skip video, take test, see which bits of the training you actually need to look at, job done.
So, OP "discovered that if you leave your cursor on the video, then press rt alt & rt arrow ..... " Really? Was OP looking for a way to get around what he was supposed to be doing? Or just goofing around instead of what he was supposed to be doing? Or are we supposed to believe this was an incredibly fortuitous accident? & Why didn't he go directly to HR instead of knocking over the 1st domino, then leaving events to unfold unpleasantly?
I was wondering the same thing... that's a pretty specific action to just stumble upon accidently. He was looking for a cheat, bragged about it to his crush, and *surprised Pikachu face*, there were consequences. The rest of the staff mocking her... wow, they sound like bratty tweens. Assuming this story is true, I hope the HR worker is OK... it seemss like she is the only person there with integrity.

We also have to do training that has absolutely nothing to do with our job. We aren't in the offices or the hospital, we don't need infection control or medical gasses training after the first year because you aren't allowed to touch them. Same for the code of conduct and harassment/sexual harassment training. You shouldn't have to do it again you say or do something wrong.. now inappropriate or unwanted touching. I Will tell you to get your hands off of me or I will do it for you.
Laws and regulations can and do change. People may move from one work environment to another, or one jurisdiction to another... People can become lax in their compliance with rules over time. Just look at the bad habits people get into driving after taking a test once in their mid/late teens (depending on where in the world they are) and tell me people don't need a little reminder every now and again. OK, so you might think it's a pain in the proverbial, but keeping that knowledge fresh in all employees minds means every employee and member of the public on the premises is safer. More public service infomercials on e.g. how to use a defibrillator, stab-pack or fire extinguisher could save lives! I bet you'd thank the person who knew how to use a defibrillator to keep you alive if you collapsed in the street, or the person who knew how to use a stab pack saved your teen's life in an emergency...

OP may be patting himself on the back about his little escapade, but he just established himself as a cheat and an underminer. There's nothing even remotely cute about what he did. If he had pulled that same stunt with the 24th Letter Corporation, he would have been escorted off the premises in record time. Those training sessions are designed to keep the employees in the know about the important aspects of the job. It sounds like OP hasn't mentally graduated high school yet.
ETA: he also might have found himself facing charges--federal and international. When it comes to security and confidentiality, corporations are no-nonsense, and have no reservations about having someone like OP led out in handcuffs.

She is HIS crush, that doesn't mean he is any more than a coworker who shared a cheat with her. Why wouldn't she share it with her closest work friend in confidence? After all, he did.
100% YTA, you of all people should know better than to CHEAT on this vital piece of training AND to share it with "your office, blabbermouth crush"! Everyone who cheated on this and publicly made "fun" of her should publicly apologize and have to attend a in person training session that includes an Ethics and Morales section, in fact all employees should have to do this annually as it appears all of you are in desperate need of this. You are supposed to be adults, not high school juniors!!! Shame on all of you!
So OP said there were questions too. I guess I assumed they just answered those, while skipping the videos. They got 100%, so it was stuff they already knew?
We had a huge amount of online training to complete last year that could not be fit in to a work day and only a fraction of the time needed was allocated. Even if you were ok doing it at home, the links only worked onsite. It resulted in cheats being shared quickly. Our department agreed we would each tackle different modules correctly, then summarize to team and highlight anything important before the whole group copied answers. Took us longer than departments who just cheated, but others who tried to do it properly could not finish. I think we got the balance right given the stupidity of hours of mandatory training without time set aside for it.
How fragile is the HR director??? Sounds like she's not ready to hold that job if she needs to go to the hospital over a simple mistake!
The bullying is what sent her over the edge, not the mistake. It's pretty obvious she had other things going on in her life and this was just one thing too many.

Seems an unlikely cheat to be possible using modern training applications. I get being able to skip the videos but can’t remember the last time I took online training where you could skip the tests &/or final test. I’ve happily skipped through annual, mandatory, training videos because the information was either the same or new info was easily deduced but you can’t get a “complete” or “pass” training without taking the test(s) demonstrating you understand the material. The HR person would have had to override default settings multiple times, along with being asked every time, “are you sure?”. I think this is a fanciful tale told by someone who doesn’t understand how training applications function.
Where I work you can skip the video and go straight to the test, it's not a cheat. But if you don't pass the test with a certain percentage, you have to go back and watch the video. For some tests you are given many chances to pass (passing is 80% to 90%), for others you are given one chance and then it's marked a fail.

Her panic attack was a little bit of an overblown reaction, but I can understand the whirlwind of emotions that took her to that state. It's like OP and the other employees are toxic, act friendly and eager and like she's doing a good job only to turn around and slap her in the face with it.
While some online training may be boring, it's necessary because stuff do change over time! Ask anyone involved in insurance, healthcare, etc.! And while shortcuts have their advantages, it's sometimes better to go through the entire course because missing even ONE critical piece of info can be DISASTROUS!

I'm not sure what platform she was using to generate the quizzes, but I've created many videos with quizzes embedded within the video or after the video. There is usually an option to allow the creator of the video to disable skipping. I feel bad for the HR lady. Mistakes happen. She should not have been beraded so harshly. The employees who did not do their training properly should have been the people who were reprimanded. Does OP not realize if you want something to stay a secret, the last thing you do is tell someone. This reminds me of people who use ChatGPT to write essays and do their work for them. Do they not realize the work and effort is apart of the process and that knowledge is necessary?? I am concerned for our future as a society. SMH.
These trainings are always such a waste of time. It's all the same annual training to say you won't grope anyone or make obvious safety violations, it's just forced on us for legal compliance. The story smells fake as well.
So, your crush is about to get stitches? Why did she do that? But, to understand - somebody actively has to write a code that includes those cheats, right? She, likely, used a software that lets you paste videos and questions and stuff, and hasn't turned off this method of skippery? But, that's not that great an issue, I wonder if there's more to it, to her situation or to how she's treated there in general, as ... the brakedown seems not to match the thing triggering it to happen.
Agreed. This sounds like it was very much the last straw in her life right now.
