Next to being a professional photographer, I also might be a bit of a castlephile. If that is even a thing. Over the years, I developed a soft spot for old castles in stunning places. It always makes me a bit sad when I find out that a great-looking castle is surrounded by ugly houses or modern commercial buildings.
No matter how impressive the castle itself may be, it immediately spoils the authentic castle vibe. However, there are still some examples where over the past centuries, little has changed and it almost feels like you are a time-traveler. These are the ones that made it onto my 'Timeless castles' list. There are many more left to collect, but here are my favorites:

Classic View On Neuschwanstein Castle In Bavaria
I've taken the castle tour twice. It's interesting to learn about the history behind it. Sadly because of King Ludwig's death, the castle was never finished. Only about 25% of the castle was ever used/finished. Oh, and wear comfortable shoes if you want to go. It's a fairly steep climb. Otherwise be prepared to shell out some cash for the carriage ride up the mountain.

Hohenzollern Castle On An Autumn Morning. How Can This Even Be Real?
Once more, most of this is 19th century neo-historism, although this one at least has some original medieval parts underneath. Wish people would see the difference...

Classic View On The Wartburg, One Of Germany's Most Important Castles
It's important, because the monk Martin Luther did the unthinkable here and translated the Bible (new testament) into the language of the common folk, ending the exclusive reign of the catholic clerics over the interpretation of the Bible. As the Bible surprisingly deviated quite far from what the church has been selling until then it lead to the foundation of the protestant church (Lutheran church). It also played a key element in the 1848 revolution https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wartburg

Those are gorgeous photos and castles! Keep up the good work :)
I'd add Harlech, Carnarvon, Beaumaris in Wales, Tintagel in Cornwall and Alnwick, Richmond and Corfe in England.
I think we are so spoilt in Britain as there are so many that are really old.
Load More Replies...I absolutely love castles! As it seems i need to visit Germany and France that have many!
Check out Ludwig II of Bavaria and his reign of crazy. He practically bankrupted Bavaria, but he built some absolutely gorgeous castles, fortresses and, my favorite, a hunting lodge. I mean he was bat crap crazy, but he had style.
Load More Replies...These are all wonderful photos of amazing castles, thank you for sharing your beautiful work!
I'd add Alcázar de Segovia in Spain and St. Briavels in the UK. I could be looking at pretty photos like these all day long
I suggest Palácio da Pena (in the picture) and Castelo dos Mouros, Sintra, Portugal. Also in Portugal Castelo de Leiria and Castelo de Guimarães. pena-613f8...6e65f4.jpg
Wish people knew the difference between a) castles and churches, and b) real castles and 19th century fakes.
Vincent, beautiful photos!! I would have liked some Ludwig castles, with the beautiful outdoor fountains. If the US had scenery like that, I’d do Volksmarches here!!
haha march ahead I'd say :) Thanks
Load More Replies...What’s the point of shortening this list, by only a single picture?
I was waiting for Schloss Moritzburg or Schloss Drachenburg, which are well-known as film sets.
Yah. Nice for the people who owned this, back in the day. Def not for all the poor folk around it. I'd be ashamed to be a billionaire and not help end problems around me.
