It all began when my uncle gave me a book by cartoonist B. Kliban called Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head when I was a teenager which inspired me to want to do cartooning.
I volunteered for my college newspaper doing cartoons and won two awards for the best panel and strip divisions among other local colleges. I then volunteered for a local newspaper for a couple of years doing editorial/politically slanted cartoons despite it not being my forte.
When I was in college I walked down to the building that the Courier-Journal national newspaper was in and submitted a cartoon that I literally just worked on between classes. The next thing I know it was published the following morning! Since then I have been submitting to various national magazines in hopes of a callback but got nothing until the Funny Times offered me a payment contract.
I've been with the Funny Times for 3 years now. It's basically gas money but still feels good to see my work published considering they have about 7,000 readers. The ultimate goal is to get a contract offer w/a newspaper syndicate which I have been trying for the last 5 years but coming up short.

Hi Elena. You've heard of Johns Hopkins school of medicine and the phrase "laughter is the best medicine", right? Hope that helps.

I just get ideas and draw them then submit to publications that pay for gags. Tje funny times publication loved this one and they have about 70,000 readers. Go figure.

Love your work. Kliban was a favorite of mine too. Husband & I have Funny Times subscription-- they are fortunate to have you!
Laughing hysterically! Brilliant humour. Drawings are fine; nothing else needed. Let your art and humour develop naturally. A twisted gift!
That was the editor's phrase. Not mine. I'm not so self indulgent.
Load More Replies...Ok... I know I'm going to sound harsh although it isn't my goal... It needs more work. You need to push yourself harder. Drawing as well as content-wise. I don't know what's your artistic background, but you'll maybe want to find what can help you evolve. Trying to be helpful not hurtful.
