35 Times Car Mechanics Took Pics Of What They Were Dealing With So Others Would Believe Them (New Pics)
For many, a badass car straight outta the salon seems like a dream. But whether your ride is one rustic yet still functional boi, or the one that gets more eyes set on it than you've ever had in your entire life, the same rule applies—you gotta take care of it. And this latter part is the one that doesn’t exactly spark too much joy.
The inevitable occurs. Preventable things happen. No surprise that surprises occur. All roads lead to car repair and hey, that’s where it gets entertaining. Thanks to the r/Justrolledintotheshop subreddit, we have the most eyebrow-raising compilation of all the crazy things people bring for car mechanics to take care of it. And you wouldn’t believe how many furballs they find in those dusty engines!
Psst! Make sure to check out our previous articles on crazy stuff car mechanics deal with at their shops that you can find here and here.

Every car owner occasionally runs into problems where hope and the car repair shop are only things that are able to help. But interestingly, a recent survey has shown that most Americans aren’t satisfied with their current auto service provider.
"Only 34 percent of consumers are always satisfied with their auto service provider," said Nelson Rodenmayer, SVP of Sales and Marketing at UpSwell, which ran the survey. "That means that 66 percent of consumers are potentially open to going somewhere else. We want to help auto shop owners tap into that 66 percent market share and get more customers into their shop."

We may discuss what good auto service is, but the survey showed that most people, 78%, believe that fair prices equate to good auto service. In fact, price beats other factors like good communication, timeliness, respect and honesty.
Meanwhile, the top three most liked offers include free tire rotation with oil change, discounted oil changes, and a loyalty program. Moreover, 36% of responders get their car checked at a service twice a year, but the number drastically increases with age. The older the respondent, the more likely they get their car serviced more often.

You may wonder how to convince customers that your car service is trustworthy. An interesting experiment was done by Quik Videos, which allows service and repair professionals to email and text short, no-cuts, real-time videos of what needs to be done on their cars and why. Turns out that about 94% of customers watch the films, and an average Quik Video-using dealership has a 212 percent upsell rate, the company’s CEO said.
Jack Gardner, CEO of Quik Video, said that filming a video that explains what has to be done on a car and why “empowers the consumer to make an informed decision.” Moreover, it allows to build that much-needed trust since “’You wouldn’t lie to me on video,’” as Gardner put it.

21' Jetta 1.4 With 1300 Miles. Probably The 6th Clutch I've Done In The Last Month. What Makes People Buy Standard Cars When They Clearly Don't Know How To Drive Stick Is Beyond Me
Fun fact: Jim Carrey did this SEVERAL times to the Saleen he was driving in "Bruce Almighty". I was an extra on the movie set and production was shut down every time they had to switch it out. And it smelled AWFUL...
I don’t see what’s wrong in the pic bc I don’t know what it should look like. Can someone tell me What is wrong in the pic and what should be there that’s missing? I’m curious.
Not a mechanic either, but I'm guessing it's the shredding around the edges of the clutch, especially at the top of the photo. That means it's been grinding against something beyond the way the part was designed for, and that's not how driving us supposed to work.
Load More Replies...I taught 4 people how to drive a stick in my car, car lasted over 20 years and never needed to replace the clutch. I mean, learning to drive a stick isn't that hard. I have had people screw up but they generally got the whole process down by the end of the day. I guess people just don't have someone there to show them how to do it? Would have thought that teaching 4 people how to drive a stick (5 if I include myself) in a car would do more damage than one person figuring it out on their own.
AGREE. if one of my friends dads hadn't trained me in 30 seconds to listen I don't know how I would ever have learned.
Load More Replies...The ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle is no longer being regularly taught to the next generation. Those of us born prior to 1980 were almost guaranteed to have been shown at least the basics. And oftentimes we taught the skills to our own offspring only to see them rarely put into practice. It's a necessary but underappreciated skill.
Maybe not in your country. In the UK I think most, if not all, driving instructors have manual cars.
Load More Replies...I used to have a Geo Tracker, and I loved that little SUV. In its 14th year, the alternator went, but the original clutch was still mint. The mechanic complimented me.
In my country you can not drive a manual since you have licence for an automatic.
I got my DL 50 years ago and have NEVER managed this kind of thing, WTF??? HTHDTH?????
my clutch lasted me 123k before it had to be changed but... when it went... it went...
with my Golf, almost same engine, I made 220k Km before changing it, but only because some noise from clutch parts...
I have a quick question, too. My father always said this statement, and I am wondering if it is the truth, or not: " Manual shift cars get much better gas mileage than an Automatic-that's because an automatic transmission is a lot heavier than a manual transmission in a car." It kinda sounded suspect to me, but you don't want to call out your Dad, know what I mean? Does anybody know if this is true, and if it isn't, perhaps maybe how he got the idea that it was? Like, waaay back in his day, maybe it was this way or something? Always wondered. Just now thought to ask finally. Hey, thanks in advance to anybody that takes a few minutes out of their time, to answer this. * big smiley face goes here*
I refused to buy a stick shift because I had to take surface streets to work in Atlanta. I would have had to buy a new clutch every year from all the tap dancing between all the traffic lights, stop signs, turns, and slow traffic.
I have driven manual shift for 35 years; never had to replace the clutch on any of my cars. Average age of my car when traded was about 12 years and most had well over 100k on the odometer. Once two friends, a husband and wife, bought the same make and model that I had been driving for about a year. Over the next five years they replaced the clutch annually on that poor car. They asked whether I'd ever had any problems with the clutch. Nope. They were both clutch riders. Held the clutch down at a stop light or stop sign for the duration. Why? To "be ready" for when it was their turn to go. That saves, what, 3 seconds on the clock? Not a good enough reason to ride the clutch in my book. Clutches are designed to be momentary. The kicker: The husband was a PhD Engineer and the wife was a Master of Mathematics.
Why aren't people teached in driving school how to drive with a manual gear in the US?
Since it's your choice... Here in belgium too you choose what you want. Only downside is in Belgium if you pass your exam with an automatic you are withheld of driving a stick shift car (it's mentioned on your driving license)

When I read these posts I am part fascinated, befuddled and terrified to know that these could very well be the type of people I share the road with on a daily basis...
This is why I am glad that in the UK, all cars over 3 years old have to pass a mandatory roadworthiness test every year. Yes, it's an expense and a nuisance (though it only costs around £35). But it means that people driving cars in poor condition like some of these examples are not on the road with me. (or if they are, they can be prosecuted). If I end up in a bad accident, it's not much consolation to know it was the other driver's fault because his car was a piece of junk. I'd much rather not be in an accident in the first place.
