Actually, it is not that “hidden.” I have visited the Redwood National and State Parks a few times while staying in Crescent City in Northern California. One of the hikes that I have taken was to Hidden Beach. I used the following book, “Best Short Hikes in Redwood National & State Parks”, by Jerry and Gisela Rohde. This book lists a large number of hikes, and was a worthy reference.
Hidden Beach can be approached two ways, a 6.2 mile round trip route, or roughly a 2 mile round trip route. I took the 2 mile version, which is a coastal trail and can be combined with the Yurok Loop trail. The hike is relatively easy and very pleasant.
A steep, 50 yard, portion of the trail leads you down to Hidden Beach. The beach is a half-circle shape, with dark, almost black sand, and gives you wonderful views of rock formations on the beach, and sea stacks offshore. If you like driftwood you can find a large assortment of sizes and shapes along the upper margin of the beach.
The beach is sort of “hidden” in the sense that as you look back towards the trail area above the beach it is lined with pine trees, and this does give one a sense of seclusion.
Take care, Joseph S Giacalone.
