I am a male in my 50s with hair that is thinning on top (but fiercely hanging on!), and still full on sides. I live in Los Angeles and have had same hairstylist for years. She does a fantastic job and I absolutely love her work. She had been at $18 for a men's cut for years, until raising it to $23 when I just went in this week. So my question is, what is the appropriate tip amount? I have been discussing this with friends and colleagues and was amazed at the lack of consensus on what an appropriate tip for a hairstylist should be. Some do it based on % of bill like you would at a restaurant and some just give flat amount. Then the flat amount people were all over the place, recommending from $2 to $15 for the $23 haircut. I gave her same $5 I had been giving with $18 cut, just under 22% of bill. Is that too little? I really do like her and she does an excellent job, so I want to reward with a good tip. I would love to hear from everyone, including any hairstylists, on what an appropriate tip would be for my $23 haircut.
