‘Boy Genius’ Who Said He’d Make Oceans Clean Themselves Just Created Solar-Powered Barges That Clean Rivers

All of us go through life-changing experiences from time to time, whether it’s our job or personal life. But some of us are inspired to change much more than just our own lives and strive for more global changes. That’s exactly how a Dutchman called Boyan Slat’s life got its purpose. He went on a diving trip to Greece when he was 16 and was appalled to see more plastic than fish on the coast and swore to himself he was going to do something about that. Little did he know, he would start The Ocean Cleanup project two years later and create a passive floating device that collects plastic. But he didn’t stop here and recently created these solar-powered barges to fish the plastic out of the rivers and prevent it from getting into the oceans.

RELATED:

Boyan Slat, a 25-year-old Dutch inventor and entrepreneur has been tackling the problem of ocean pollution since 2011

Boyan started The Ocean Cleanup with a mission to develop advanced technology that could rid the oceans of the plastic and particularly disassemble and clean the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a stretch of marine debris that stretches from California to Japan.

After he figured it’s best to start at the source, his nonprofit “The Ocean Cleanup” created this solar-powered barge that can clean 110 tons of garbage every day

The nonprofit managed to collect two shipping containers full of trash from the area over the years. But Boyan figured he’d rather turn to the source than try to solve the problem by “treating the symptoms”. The engineer and conservationist found out that the 1000 rivers around the world are the source of about 80 percent of the plastic that gets dumped into the oceans.

This could make a dramatic impact since apparently 80 percent of plastic that ends up in the oceans comes from the rivers

The Ocean Cleanup’s latest invention the “Inceptor” was created to tackle that problem. The solar-powered barge is created specifically to suck river debris into dumpsters and then bring it onshore for recycling.

The river-cleaning barge sucks river debris and brings it onshore to be recycled

One such barge can collect up to 110 tons of garbage that would otherwise get into the ocean waters every single day and therefore reduce the amount of waste that actually reaches the oceans drastically.

This way, the ocean pollution problem can be solved at the source and the plastic won’t reach the open ocean waters

It is hoped to have “Inceptor” barges in every one of the world’s most polluting rivers by 2025. But for now, they are already working towards cleaning the Klang River in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the Cengkareng Drain in Jakarta, Indonesia.

“The Ocean Cleanup” also has a previous project that’s still ongoing which targets the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

“Our team has remained steadfast in its determination to solve immense technical challenges to arrive at this point,” Boyan said. “Though we still have much more work to do, I am eternally grateful for the team’s commitment and dedication to the mission and look forward to continuing to the next phase of development.”

Their passive floating device collects plastic and is predicted to clean half the patch in 5 years

Everyone can support The Ocean Cleanup’s mission by nominating their rivers and appealing to their local governments. You can also donate and therefore help more “Inceptors” to be built and placed in the rivers where they’re needed the most.

It uses the ocean current to do all of the work as the device floats freely and collects waste

This is not a billion dollar idea. It's hugely expensive and they are working hard to make a commercial viable system so it can be self sustaining. What do you mean he could care less about the profit? He really wants this thing to be financially viable. No, seriously, where is all this money he's just not bothering to collect? Also, he's doing this with a team of people but you act like it's all on his own.

That's awesome and great for cleaning up rivers and the ocean. Two comments though: 1: where does it all go after it's cleaned up 2: the true source is all the packaging, reduce plastic usage otherwise your project will never end.

Had the same thing happen to me twice now. In the early 2000s when Queer Eye first aired and the whole Metrosexual fad was out I wanted to create Mandels, candles for men. Everyone told me it was stupid so I had no help. Two years later what did I see while Christmas shopping at Yankee Candels, fresh cut grass, fireplace, and others. I was so mad I didn't buy any of them s**t that year.

Can you at least do any research before you criticise stuff you don't know anything about? The Ocean Cleanup is mainly funded by donations and sponsors. As of November 2019 it has made a little over $35 million from sponsors including Salesforce.com chief executive Marc Benioff, philanthropist Peter Thiel, Julius Baer Foundation and Royal DSM. Peter Andreas Thiel is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He is a co-founder of PayPal, Palantir Technologies and Founders Fund. He was ranked No. 4 on the Forbes Midas List of 2014, with a net worth of $2.2 billion, and No. 328 on the Forbes 400 in 2018, with a net worth of $2.5 billion.

This guy is not only talented inventor, he's good human being. The problem is that he won't be able to keep up with all those irresponsible, despicable "people" who designated rivers and oceans as their garbage dump!!! Where are the governments to stop it??? Where is public to demand it??? The greedy corporations and mega businesses will not stop plundering, destroying our planet and massacring all living beings it supports, unless they are forced to cease doing so. The consumers have responsibility to stop waste and cruelty as well. It's our collective duty to stop destruction of our planet, torture of all sentient beings, including suffering farm animals, which would lead to pain-free, disease-free life for every one of us. The road to better you starts on your plate!!! You have the power to change the world, simply by changing what you eat. We all have the potential to make a difference for animals, for the planet, and our health, all these are connected.

Scientists (that is, experts who spent a life doing this stuff) said his Ocean Clean Up won’t work. They were right but I don’t have e room to explain why. It’s a shame we’re in 2020 and still acting like this kid was some sort of genius. Maybe the barge will be more effective but if it was thought out like his last project I doubt it. The solution is to stop dumping c**p in the environment in the first place.

This reminds me of the 2018 documentary SCIENCE FAIR, which profiles young people with burning scientific passions. KUDOS TO HIM. I would like to point out that dealing with pollutants "at the source" is not in the rivers. It is the plastic packaging and plastic bags used for groceries. Styrofoam peanuts, medical and dental items that are not recyclable; etc. etc. etc.

All you're doing is moving trash from one place to another ! Non of this is recycled it goes to a landfill, and landfills extremely over used as it it . So how much of an impact will these millions of tones of "water trash" have on the overloaded landfill system ? And how ling befor they wont accept this water trash anymore ? You're just trading one problem for another, and spending a lot of money to do it !

Actually most of the trash that is in the ocean is NOT floating around to be hauled up in fishing nets. It’s way down deep and getting into the lite. Boys Slat and people who worship him and those like him without asking EXPERTS why these things weren’t don’t decades ago are the problem. Look at all the adulation here. Not a single example to prove it’s working. Put anything In the sea for a few days and you’ll see why. (There’s a reason why ships are covered in c**p like seaweed and barnacles and why crabs and fish have to be sorter by size.) there’s a reason why it’s called “schoolboy logic”!

This seems ridiculous to me. If we really want to go to the source and stop trash from ending up in the ocean, we need to go further upstream than the rivers. We need to make sure trash collected everywhere (all countries) are properly managed, and end up in landfills rather than oceans.

Can't please everyone and nothing works 100% of the time. That's why you learn from failures. Admitting you are wrong and learning from it is a key component of childhood development. Some people seem to have not learned that and some tend to forget. Admitting you were wrong is not a death sentence or mortal sin.

You have no idea how many inventions were killed by the powerful who profited and profit from the status quo.

This lad is truly inspirational; I remember hearing about him a few years ago, and I’m so glad that he is continuing, and beginning to succeed in his great work.

Again, first of all we all have to put our intellect (who has it) and efforts (all of us) to stop messing up the planet.

Styrofoam peanuts, medical and dental items that are not recyclable; etc. etc. etc.

Great young man! He is so responsible and clever. I hope he is given the respect and rewards that he deserves, even though they may not be monetary. However, he DOES deserve to get paid for his brilliant invention.

Funny how ocean garbage has become the popular feel-good issue for people who refuse to admit more dire problems like global warming. I'm glad that even people who choose to deny global warming have *some* desire to feel like they're helping the environment, even if all they do is upvote this story and downvote me.

If it sucks up river debris couldn't that also mean that it sucks up all the little organisms that live on the ground like snails and small fish and stuff? It is a good idea, I'm just wondering...

This seems ridiculous to me. If we really want to go to the source and stop trash from ending up in the ocean, we need to go further upstream than the rivers. We need to make sure trash collected everywhere (all countries) are properly managed, and end up in landfills rather than oceans.

It seems ridiculous to dumping trash in the rivers and oceans (and anywhere else for that matter) in the faster speed than be able to cleaning it up.

No it won't. We've got to stop producing the pollution. Giving a tiny bit of money to people who claim to be cleaning up our pollution isn't nearly enough.

So do it! Take a grabby stick and a trash bag and clean your area. (I do this, every sunday morning at seven when I walk my dog)

FYI, his last project (the one that was deployed on the ocean) had a lot of opposition from scientists and engineers. And failed, as naysayers predicted. https://www.wired.com/story/ocean-cleanups-plastic-catcher/

Can't please everyone and nothing works 100% of the time. That's why you learn from failures. Admitting you are wrong and learning from it is a key component of childhood development. Some people seem to have not learned that and some tend to forget. Admitting you were wrong is not a death sentence or mortal sin.
